Valve’s Steam Machine: Summer Release Planned, Still No Price

Valve is still determined to release its living room PC game console, called the Steam Machine, despite skyrocketing prices for gaming hardware across the board, including the company’s own Steam Deck. June was considered one of the most likely times for Valve to release its home console, but while there is no specific release date yet, Valve did offer an update on when it will launch the Steam Machine.  The Steam Machine is set to release sometime this summer, according to a blog post by Valve on Thursday. It will come out alongside the Steam Frame, Valve’s VR headset, which was revealed along with the Steam Machine and new Steam Controller last November.  The Steam Machine is Valve’s gaming PC, built into a roughly 6-inch cube that’s designed to connect to a living room TV. The aim is to deliver a simplified PC gaming experience for a broad audience, and for game developers to optimize for a single spec like they’ve done with the Steam Deck. The only PC controller I’ll ever need definitely isn’t the Steam Controller

The only PC controller I’ll ever need definitely isn’t the Steam Controller

I really like the look of Valve’s second-generation Steam Controller. The only problem for this diehard PC gamer is that this peripheral, which should retail for $99, is currently going for well over $150 on auction sites. That’s because the first waves of stock for this gamepad disappeared oh so quickly. While there are reasons the new Steam Controller is the best thing to happen to gaming in a long time, I’m happy to stay loyal to my current gamepad of choice. And that controller is the DualSense Edge. Sure, it’s not exactly a cheaper alternative to Valve’s peripheral (official MSRP is still set to $199). For me, though, the best gamepad Sony has ever manufactured has become my go-to PC peripheral of choice over the past couple of years for (ironically) Steam-focused reasons. Related I turned my Steam Deck into a portable PS5 with this one app Forget the PS Portal. This free software brings PS5 remote play to Valve’s portable PC. Steam Deck’s 0 price hike just killed what made it special

Steam Deck’s $240 price hike just killed what made it special

Summary Valve raised basic Steam Deck OLED prices from $550 to $789. The price change makes the overall value of the Steam Deck harder to justify. Prices for the Steam Machine are expected to rise, as well as prices across the industry. The Steam Deck has been one of the few bright spots in PC gaming hardware over the last couple of years. While graphics cards kept getting more expensive and gaming laptops drifted further into “luxury purchase” territory, Valve’s handheld managed to hit a sweet spot. It was powerful enough to play modern games, but cheap enough that people could actually justify buying one. That’s changing, though.
