Republicans strip Trump ballroom money from immigration bill

Kent Nishimura | Afp | Getty Images Senate Republicans on Wednesday stripped up to $1 billion in security funding for President Donald Trump’s proposed White House ballroom and the Secret Service from a revised immigration enforcement bill. GOP leaders privately concluded that the funding proposal risked derailing the broader immigration bill, both politically and procedurally, according to several media reports. The provision also sparked political concerns among some Senate Republicans, who worried the funding could make the party appear out of touch as voters struggle with high costs ahead of the midterm elections in November. Trump had personally pushed lawmakers to authorize the funding for the controversial ballroom project and the Secret Service. Trump administration officials argued the money was necessary in light of the alleged April 25 assassination attempt against Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton. Administration officials have said only …

xAI Asks Court to Strip Alleged Grok Deepfake Nudes Victims of Anonymity

“Factoring out the deepfake image itself—as it will remain under seal—there is nothing inherently stigmatizing about revealing the fact that a deepfake image was created of South Carolina Doe without revealing the image itself,” the lawyers wrote in one of their May 15 filings. “As a result, this case simply does not involve the types of compelling privacy interests traditionally recognized as requiring pseudonymity.” Neither xAI nor lawyers representing the company responded to WIRED’s request for comment about the case. Danielle Citron, a law professor at the University of Virginia School of Law who has specialized in tackling digital abuse, says civil cases where people are ordered to sue using their real names can lead to lawsuits being dropped, creating an “unacceptable and unjust” situation. “Forcing plaintiffs in privacy suits to sue in their names does so little for judicial transparency and so much to deter litigation,” Citron tells WIRED. All of the four pseudonyms claimants in the case, according to their legal filings on May 29, would consider dropping out of the proceedings if …

Children subjected to ‘humiliating and traumatising’ strip searches | UK News

Too many children are still being subjected to “intrusive and traumatic” strip searches, the Children’s Commissioner has warned. A report from the office of Dame Rachel de Souza has found while the number of police strip searches of children has fallen by more than half in four years, there remain concerns about the use of force in some cases and persistent disparities in how white and black youths are treated. Dame Rachel has said there should be a “much higher threshold” before a child is subjected to a “humiliating and traumatising” strip search. Using data from the first half of 2024, her office estimated a total of 377 strip searches took place that year – down from 854 searches in 2020. That was the year Child Q, a black teenager, was strip-searched in east London while on her period after police wrongly suspected her of carrying cannabis. It did not come to light until a safeguarding report was published in March 2022, sparking protests. The two Metropolitan Police officers involved in searching the 15-year-old were …

Spanberger Signs Unconstitutional Bill To Strip Confederacy-Linked Groups Of Tax Exempt Status

Spanberger Signs Unconstitutional Bill To Strip Confederacy-Linked Groups Of Tax Exempt Status

Authored by Jonathan Turley, There has been growing criticism (and falling poll numbers) of Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger after she ran as a moderate and then immediately veered to the far left after her election.  Once in power, Spanberger and the Democrats unleashed a slew of tax increases, moved to eliminate all but one Republican district in the purple state, passed an array of anti-gun laws, and enacted other controversial measures. One of these measures is a clearly unconstitutional effort to strip pro-Confederate groups of their tax exemption. This week, Spanberger signed HB167, the law that eliminated the tax exemption for various confederacy-linked groups, including the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the General Organization of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, the Stonewall Jackson Memorial, Incorporated, the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust, Inc. Notably, as soon as they came into power, Democrats also passed House Bill 1377 to move against the Virginia Military Institute, including appointing a task …

Anker’s Nano Power Strip Clamps to Your Desk for Easy Access to 10 Ports

Anker’s $70 Nano Power Strip Clamps to Your Desk for Easy Access to 10 Ports

Anker this week launched a useful new accessory for your desk, debuting the 10-in-1 Nano Power Strip. Priced at $70, the Nano Power Strip has a unique clamp design that puts multiple ports on your desktop while eliminating cable clutter. I was able to test out the Nano Power Strip ahead of when it launched, and found it to be a useful alternative to standard under-desk power strips. The power strip comes in black or white and it’s made of plastic, but the matte finish adds aesthetic appeal, as does a silver front plate for some of the ports. The clamp is adjustable with an included knob and it fits desktops from 0.6 inches to 1.8 inches. Unfortunately, I have a Parsons-style desk that’s too thick to use the power strip as intended, so it’s worth measuring. With my thicker desk, I can still attach it to a leg or the back of the desk, but it doesn’t put all of the outlets in the ideal position. There are silicone pads at both sides of …

Prince Harry’s fears that Prince William could strip Archie and Lilibet of their titles revealed

Prince Harry’s fears that Prince William could strip Archie and Lilibet of their titles revealed

Prince Harry feared that his brother Prince William could show “no mercy” towards his family after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his titles, a royal author has claimed.  In his new book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, Tom Bower explores the “split between the Houses of Sussex and Windsor”. Betrayal, which is published on 26 March, investigates whether the “broken bonds” between Prince William and Kate, and Harry and Meghan, can ever be repaired. A spokesperson for the Sussexes has denied the claims in the book, criticising the author for his “fixation” on the couple.  In one passage, the royal biographer describes Prince Harry’s anticipated reaction in the US to news that Andrew had been stripped of his titles on 30 October – and the realisation it meant his own royal status was “no longer invincible”.  It meant anything was possible in the future, including putting the titles of Harry’s children at risk. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, would use …

New Zealand backs UK move to strip Andrew from royal succession | Royal | News

Christopher Luxon has pledged New Zealand’s support for ejecting Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal succession order. The New Zealand Prime Minister’s office released a statement confirming Wellington would back any British proposal to remove the disgraced former prince from the throne’s line of inheritance. A spokesman for Luxon said: “If the UK Government proposes to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the order of succession, New Zealand would support it. “The UK Government has said any proposals would come after the police investigation concludes.” The Express reported on how Thames Valley officers took Andrew into custody in the early hours of Thursday over alleged misconduct in public office. Andrew denies any wrongdoing in connection with evidence released in the Epstein files. Despite losing his royal titles in late 2024, he currently occupies the eighth position in the succession hierarchy. Coordinated Commonwealth legislation needed UK lawmakers are exploring legislative options to expunge Mountbatten-Windsor from the succession list — a constitutional change that demands approval from all 15 Commonwealth realms, each of which must enact matching domestic laws. Australian …

Ministers have so far been unable to strip Wayne Couzens of his pension | UK News

Ministers have so far been unable to strip Wayne Couzens, the former police officer who raped and murdered Sarah Everard, of his public sector pension and are considering introducing legislation if required, Sky News can reveal. In March 2021, when he was a serving Metropolitan Police officer, Couzens used his police warrant to lure Sarah Everard into a fake arrest while she was walking home from a friend’s house in south London, during the COVID-19 pandemic. He later raped and murdered her. In 2023, London’s mayor Sadiq Khan successfully applied to the home secretary to have any money that Couzens could have earned in pension payments while serving at the Met forfeited. It’s understood to be so small that it would be a negligible amount because of the short length of service there.
