The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Utah’s 3rd District Court by the Alliance for a Better Utah and the group of anonymous residents. The plaintiffs hope to challenge the constitutionality of the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) — a special entity that oversees the data center’s proposal — and its approval of the project, a spokesperson for the nonprofit said. Attorney David Irvine, who is representing the plaintiffs, alleges that MIDA is exercising powers as an unelected body that “the Utah Constitution never authorized.” “Under the Stratos plan, it would hold permanent, irrevocable control over public health, safety, taxation, and land use across tens of thousands of acres of Box Elder County, with no voter recourse,” he said in a statement. The lawsuit alleges that …

Thai watchdog to sue Meta over Facebook scam ads targeting users

Thai watchdog to sue Meta over Facebook scam ads targeting users

BANGKOK: Thailand’s consumer watchdog said it will sue Meta’s Facebook for allegedly allowing scammers to use the platform to defraud users through adverts and for failing to protect consumers, the Consumer Council said on Thursday (Jun 4). Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.  In previous cases, the company has said it invests in measures to detect and remove scam content and works with regulators and law enforcement to combat misuse of its platforms.  The planned lawsuit comes amid broader efforts by governments worldwide to tighten oversight of social media platforms and curb the use of digital services for fraud and other cross-border crimes. Between 2024 and 2026, the council recorded 3,793 complaints linked to Facebook, including cases where users did not receive purchased goods, alleged fake investment schemes, impersonation using victims’ names and photos and pages created to mislead buyers. The watchdog says it has tried for more than a year to contact Meta, both the parent company and in Thailand, asking Facebook to block fraudulent ads. There are about …

Art Basel Miami Protestors Sue Politician Over ‘Jew Hater’ Billboard

Miami City Commissioner David Suarez has confirmed to ARTnews that he paid to send billboard trucks to personally attack pro-Palestinian protest organizers outside the Art Basel Miami Beach fair in December. A filing in Southern Florida District Court from earlier this month had made the accusation, reported the Intercept. Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) was one of four groups that organized a rally outside the fair. The trucks called JVP an “extremist group” and called members Alan Levine and his wife, Donna Nevel, “Jew haters.” Related Articles The groups were calling for a boycott over financial ties between Swiss bank UBS, which sponsors Art Basel, and Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems.  “Before everyone begins the predictable gymnastics routine where antisemitism gets rebranded as ‘expressive freedom,’ let me preempt it: They absolutely have the right to speak, protest, and express themselves any way the Constitution allows. And so do I,” said Suarez in an email to ARTnews. “I will defend their legal right to say things I believe are evil, antisemitic, and disgusting,” said Suarez. “But free …

States sue to stop student loan limits on some healthcare degrees : NPR

A nurse checks a patient’s heart rate. kieferpix/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption kieferpix/Getty Images A coalition of 24 states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit in federal court Tuesday challenging a Trump administration rule that limits access to federal student loans for borrowers earning a graduate degree in several popular, healthcare-related fields. “Higher education is expensive, and our health care system is already under immense strain,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. “This rule will shut talented people out of critical professions and leave communities with fewer health care providers they desperately need.” At issue is a pair of complex changes that, taken together, drew the ire of the American Nurses Association and triggered Tuesday’s lawsuit. First, Republicans passed new limits on graduate student loans as part of last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The law does not change limits for undergraduate borrowers, including those attending undergraduate nursing programs, but it dramatically scales back how much graduate students can borrow. Previously, grad students could borrow up to …

News organizations sue to unseal filings in DOJ’s Fulton County election investigation

A group of news organizations, including NBC News, has filed a motion to unseal filings and subpoenas in the Department of Justice’s ongoing investigation into the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. In January, the FBI seized ballots and other materials from the 2020 election from an elections hub in Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold in the key battleground state that President Donald Trump lost in 2020. Last month, the DOJ also sought to compel the county to hand over the names, home addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of workers and volunteers who served during that election. County officials have so far refused, calling it an effort to “target, harass, and punish the President’s perceived political opponents” in a filing to quash the subpoena. They also note that the statute of limitations for any election crimes in 2020 has run out. Fulton County’s response justifies unsealing the filings, the news organizations argued. “The grand jury witness — Fulton County …

Miami Residents Sue Trump and DeSantis Over Presidential Library Land Deal

A group of Miami residents and a local nonprofit have sued President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Miami Dade College, and members of the Florida Cabinet over plans for Trump’s future presidential library, arguing that the transfer of a prime stretch of downtown waterfront land violates the U.S. Constitution.  According to the Associated Press, the lawsuit centers on a 2.63-acre parcel next to Miami’s historic Freedom Tower that was transferred from Miami Dade College to the state before being donated to Trump’s presidential library foundation by DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet last year. According to the complaint, the land is worth at least $67 million, though some appraisers cited in the suit argue the bayfront site could fetch hundreds of millions more on the open market.  Related Articles Filed by the Constitutional Accountability Center and Miami law firm Gelber Schachter & Greenberg, the suit argues that the transfer violates the Constitution’s Domestic Emoluments Clause, which bars states from providing financial benefits or gifts to a sitting president beyond an official salary.  The legal challenge also takes …
