Why Nietzsche Wanted His Works to Be Sung Rather Than Read

Published: May 26, 2026written by Simon Lea, PhD Philosophy Summary A failed composer, Nietzsche wrote his books like symphonies, intending for them to be performed and sung aloud. He believed the sound and emotion in spoken words convey more meaning than the silent, written text itself. To communicate maximum feeling, Nietzsche wanted his philosophy sung, inspired by the spoken traditions of Ancient Greece. Show more   Nietzsche wanted to be a successful composer but lacked musical talent. However, he took his love of music and made music with his words. His books were written not to be read quietly and studied but to be performed. Nietzsche once said that when he first came across a new text, he asked himself if it would make him dance. He wanted his readers to sing and dance to his texts and composed his books like symphonies.   Friedrich Nietzsche Friedrich Nietzsche by Friedrich Hermann Hartmann, c. 1875. Beef Season 2 Was Inspired By 'Real-Life Incident', Creator Lee Sung Jin Claims

Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan in Beef If bingeing your way through the most recent season of Beef cut close to home at any point, that’s probably because creator Lee Sung Jin was inspired by incidents from real life when putting the new episodes together. The second iteration of the award-winning Netflix series focusses on two couples – played by Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny – on opposite sides of a generational and class divide, who become embroiled in a feud that takes over all four of their lives. Speaking to People, writer and director Lee admitted that the “springboard” of the whole season was a “real-life incident” in which he overheard “a ‘heated debate’ coming from a couple’s home”. It was only when retelling what he heard to people of different generations and backgrounds that he realised this could form the basis of a new season of Beef. “Younger people reacted like Ashley and Austin,” he recalled. “Whereas my similarly-aged or older peers were like, ‘It’s a fight. I mean, …

Beef Creator Lee Sung Jin and Star Charles Melton on Season 2

When Beef creator Lee Sung Jin finally settled on the premise for season two of the hit anthology series, he had one actor in mind — Charles Melton. Lee decided to take matters into his own hands, calling up Gold House founder Bing Chen to cash in a favor. The writer-director asked to be seated next to Melton at a dinner they’d both be attending to honor the actor, so he could pitch him the second season. “I remember just being immensely flattered because I didn’t know he went to the extent that he went to sit next to me,” Melton tells The Hollywood Reporter during the show’s season two junket. “It was amazing to have Lee Sung Jin, Sonny, the creator, show me a picture of my face and say, ‘This is in the writer’s room and we’re writing it for you,’” Melton continues. “I was completely astonished.” Beef’s second season leaves behind the parking lot feuds, instead focusing on two couples, one millennial (Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan) and one Gen Z (Melton …

The Flying Dutchman review – delusion, torment and menace in detailed and finely sung Wagner | Opera

In 1839, the 26-year-old Richard Wagner almost drowned during a perilous voyage across the Baltic from Riga. It was this experience that he claimed inspired The Flying Dutchman, the legend of a man condemned for eternity to sail the oceans in his ghost ship giving the composer the narrative for his first mature opera. Wagner thought of his libretto as a poem, and it certainly grapples with some of the epic questions: birth, life, love and death. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. Welsh National Opera’s new staging, directed by Jack Furness, begins with a woman in childbirth, the wild and stormy surges of the overture coinciding with her contractions. Actress Kate Hudson lit up the red carpet in Berlin on Wednesday, November 19 as she joined Hugh Jackman for the premiere of their new movie, Song Sung Blue, at the Zoo Palast cinema. The star, 46, who plays Claire Sardina in the upcoming musical drama, delivered a dazzling, on-theme fashion moment in a plunging sheer gown in – what else – electric blue. With long puffed sleeves, ruched waist detailing, a dramatic cowl back and a delicate mini train, the look was both glamorous and playful.
