Yamil Lage | Afp | Getty Images Cuba has run out of oil and diesel, its energy minister said on Wednesday, as an ongoing U.S. blockade starves the island nation of fuel. “The sum of the different types of fuel: crude oil, fuel oil, of which we have absolutely none; diesel, of which we have absolutely none … the only thing we have is gas from our wells, where production has grown,” Cuban Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy said on state media, according to broadcaster the BBC. A U.S. blockade has blocked shipments of oil into the country since January, prompting blackouts lasting up to 22 hours a day in parts of the Cuban capital Havana. De la O Levy said the country’s predicament is “extremely tense.” According to Reuters news agency, which has reporters on the ground in Havana, protests broke out in the city on Wednesday evening, with hundreds crowding the streets, blocking roads with garbage and …

The Iran war has depleted supplies of tungsten, a critical mineral for the world’s militaries

The Iran war has depleted supplies of tungsten, a critical mineral for the world’s militaries

The US and Israel’s conflict with Iran has drained munitions at an astonishing rate. This is placing pressure on the supply of a crucial metal: tungsten. Tungsten is used in armour piercing munitions, in components that need to withstand high levels of heat and is an important additive in steel. Militaries around the world would grind to a halt without this strategically important element. Yet, despite the current demand, the amount of tungsten mined each year is dwarfed by other metal ores, such as iron and aluminium (bauxite). In addition, most of the world’s tungsten comes from China, which has recently placed restrictions on supplies. For some countries, including the UK, the push to secure new tungsten resources has never been more vital. The English name for tungsten, comes from the Swedish “tung sten”, meaning heavy stone. Tungsten’s extreme hardness and resistance to thermal shock are what make it sought after for military technology. In armour piercing munitions, dense tungsten alloy rods use the sheer velocity of their impact to tear through the armour on …

Iran war: How the crisis in key Strait of Hormuz waterway is affecting fuel supplies for different countries | Money News

Fears of fuel shortages have been sparked recently as the number of tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz was reduced to a trickle amid threats from Iran, which experts say effectively controls the waterway. Now some of those concerns are coming to fruition with several countries experiencing shortages. Normally, about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies flow through the strait but since the start of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February shipping has almost come to a standstill. Pic: Reuters Iranian retaliatory attacks have forced vessels to stay put, causing petrostate storage facilities to fill and some production to cease. More than 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum liquids per day normally transit the Strait of Hormuz, but daily traffic is reportedly down by about 95%. However, some ships linked to Pakistan, China and India are being allowed through by Iran. But the impacts …

The country has a chronic malnutrition problem and ongoing outbreaks of cholera, measles and polio, says Marc Schakal, the program manager for Doctors without Borders. “We are already seeing in our pediatrics an increasing number of admissions. We are reaching 120% bed occupancy,” Schakal says. The group has procured over 100 tons of therapeutic foods to treat severe malnutrition in children under 5. But that, along with other key medications, is stuck in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, a critical hub for medical and humanitarian supplies. “Our main priority is to have this therapeutic food arriving in Yemen on time,” he says. But the war in Iran has stalled global supplies of fuel, fertilizers and also …
