The 100 Best Novels of All Time… Supposedly

In today’s round-up of literary headlines, we look at The Guardian‘s picks for the best 100 novels of all time, the Barnes & Noble CEO’s stance on selling AI-written books, and more. The Guardian’s 100 Best Novels of All Time The Guardian has been rolling out its picks for the 100 best novels of all time, and now you can check out the full list. They polled 172 authors and experts on their top ten nominations and then combined them. Don’t take away my reader card, but I’ve only read 18 of the books on this list… and only one of them would be in my personal top ten: Beloved by Toni Morrison, which took the #2 spot overall. In its write-up of the process, The Guardian notes the increase in women writers as opposed to earlier versions: a whopping 36 of 100! I can’t say I find that too impressive, personally. They also mention some of the notable books missing, like The Lord of the Rings and To Kill a Mockingbird. There are also …

Anthropic Drops Its Huge Safety Pledge That Was Supposedly the Whole Point of the Company

Now, Anthropic may be heading down the same path of its rivals. On Tuesday, it revealed a new version of its Responsible Scaling Policy that drops its core safety commitment first made in 2023: to stop training and refuse to deploy an AI system if it couldn’t guarantee it had proper safety guardrails in place that met stringent internal standards. The new sentiment among the company’s leadership is that this has become an unneeded chain around its foot. “We felt that …

6 Signs A Man Is Not Serious About A Woman He Supposedly Loves

Wanting to know how serious he is about you is arguably the most asked question in any advice column and, while it should be so easy as just asking your partner about the status of your relationship, unfortunately, that’s not always the case. What he says and what he does can allude to very different outcomes for the two of you and, while I don’t advocate second-guessing all of his moves, it’s important to keep your eyes open. A man who is truly serious about you won’t leave you guessing. Actions will always speak louder than words, and when a guy is all in, you’ll feel it. So if you’ve been making excuses for his behavior, it might be time to take an honest look at what’s really going on. These are the signs that could mean a man is not nearly as serious about the woman he supposedly loves.  1. He doesn’t let her meet his friends Vitaly Gariev / Unsplash Come on. Supposedly distinct psychiatric conditions may have same root causes

We may have misunderstood the genetic basis of psychiatric conditions CNRI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY An analysis of gene variants in more than a million people diagnosed with neurodivergencies and mental health conditions – by far the largest study of its kind so far – has found that 14 conditions typically regarded as distinct actually fall into five underlying genetic groups. The finding is encouraging for those diagnosed with multiple psychiatric conditions, says Andrew Grotzinger at the University of Colorado Boulder, a member of the research team behind the analysis. People can feel this means there is a lot wrong with them, he says, but there may be just one root cause. “For the millions of people out there who are being diagnosed with multiple psychiatric conditions, this indicates that they don’t have multiple distinct things going on,” says Grotzinger. “I think it makes a big difference for a patient to hear that.” When biologists started looking for genetic variants that are associated with a higher chance of developing a range of psychiatric conditions, they expected to …
