Riz Ahmed on turning Bait’s chilling hate crime scene into the surreal

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for Bait.** As the world starts closing in on Shah Latif (Riz Ahmed) in Prime Video’s Bait, things start to go from ordinary to slightly surreal as the struggling actor has to deal with being thrown into the spotlight. Having engineered a studio exit to be captured by paparazzi so the James Bond rumour mill could involve him, Shah is taken aback as he realises that not everyone is pleased at the prospect of him being the new 007. While his family and friends may be over the moon for him, he soon sees online vitriol being thrown his way, with plenty of racism and Islamophobia sadly piled on. Part of those scenes involves a pig’s head being thrown through the window of his parents’ home, a chilling hate crime in amongst all of the laughter of the series. But we soon see that Shah is actually using the pig’s head in another way – talking to it as though he’s on a podcast. Chatting to Radio Times about where …

Surreal Footage Shows Melania Trump Walking Into White House Summit With Humanoid Robot

Surreal Footage Shows Melania Trump Walking Into White House Summit With Humanoid Robot

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech President Donald Trump’s State-of-the-Union speech last month was notably light on education policy. While actively dismantling the US Department of Education and implementing shameful anti-trans policies at schools, the Trump administration has focused its efforts on AI education in what it frames as an attempt to ensure that young Americans have the “skills and understanding necessary to thrive in the AI-driven workforce.” Beyond advocating for the use of AI to teach impressionable young minds — the tech’s extensive and well-documented shortcomings be damned — the White House is making it clear that it’s putting it front and center. During a surreal publicity stunt on Wednesday, First Lady Melania Trump walked down the red carpet of the White House’s Eastern Room next to a black-and-white humanoid robot, dubbed Figure 03, built by US-based company Figure. Introduced in October, Figure 03 is the company’s third generation humanoid robot, designed to be a “truly general-purpose robot” that can “perform human-like tasks …

A New Game Turns the H-1B Visa System Into a Surreal Simulation

A New Game Turns the H-1B Visa System Into a Surreal Simulation

More than half of the nine developers who worked on the game have either obtained a US visa or tried and failed to do so. Most of them are from China, but the team also intentionally recruited talent from other countries in the hopes of incorporating more diverse immigrant perspectives. “Everybody knows somebody that’s on a visa, but not all of them are vocal about that part of their identity,” says Andrea Saravia Pérez, an immigrant from Colombia who joined the team in February as a narrative designer. “How can we develop a project that’s interactive and shows people this immigration system that a lot of Americans are not familiar with?” There’s growing interest across the gaming industry in making political games, says Yang. When her team brought H1B.Life to the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week, she says they received a tremendous amount of interest and support because they are tackling an important societal issue without expecting to make much profit. (The game was supported by a philanthropic organization and the …

At Nancy Guthrie’s Home, a Surreal Scene of Chaos and Camaraderie

At Nancy Guthrie’s Home, a Surreal Scene of Chaos and Camaraderie

“It’s Monday morning quarterbacking,” Nanos said. “I do it all the time, so you can do that for me. I’ll take that hit.” And to a question about whether possible evidence could have been contaminated? That’s a later problem. “I’ll let the courts worry about that.” Even a widely reported SWAT action at a residence near Guthrie’s home Friday night was accompanied by little context: Media assembled at a designated point, expecting an update, but were told hours later that there would be no formal statement. “Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI – no additional information is currently available,” the PCSD said via X. According to CNN, no suspects were detained in the law enforcement swarm, which blocked a road about two miles from the primary scene. Day after day for almost two weeks, a growing number of people—media professionals and self-appointed citizen investigators alike—have flocked to Nancy’s home in the Catalina Foothills outside Tucson, where information comes out in drips and drabs, sudden flurries of activity erupt and …

Salvador Dalí’s Surreal Jewelry Designs: From Throbbing Heart Necklaces to Medusa Brooches

Salvador Dalí’s Surreal Jewelry Designs: From Throbbing Heart Necklaces to Medusa Brooches

Upon hearing the name of Salvador Dalí, even a total layman in the art world is bound to get visions of melting clocks. Surprisingly, for an artist who showed so much self-marketing savvy, Dalí never brought an actual timepiece in that distinctively, even canonically surreal shape to market. But that hardly stopped Cartier from putting out the Crash, whose distorted shape may have always brought The Persistence of Memory to mind, but whose name hints at the inspiration of a watch smashed up in a car wreck. The Crash came out in swinging-sixties London at its very height, by which time Dalí himself had been designing real jewelry for more than a quarter century. ?si=v8xd7w6Tr3ZQzIIq You can see a few of Dalí’s jewels in the 1960 British Pathé clip at the top of the post. Unsurprisingly, they occupy a realm apart from, or at least orthogonal to, that of conventional jewelry. Some of them move: Living Flower, for instance, which “opens to reveal stamen and petals paved with diamonds. The mechanism is embedded in malachite from the …
