Survey shows religious privilege out of step with younger Northern Ireland – Humanists UK

New data from the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey shows that at least one in three young adults in Northern Ireland has no religion. This underlines the growing diversity of belief among younger people. Northern Ireland Humanists said the figures show that public policy and civic life are out of step with an increasingly non-religious society, and must reflect the changing beliefs and values of modern Northern Ireland, especially among younger people. The 2025 survey found that 33% of 18–24-year-olds and 40% of 25–34-year-olds say they belong to no religion. Across the population as a whole, 27% say they have no religion, compared with 34% Catholic and 39% Protestant or other Christian. Commenting on the data, Northern Ireland Humanists Coordinator Boyd Sleator said: ‘The data from the Life and Times survey shows just how much Northern Ireland is changing. Yet despite the fact that Northern Ireland’s young people are increasingly non-religious, too many of our institutions still act as though everyone fits neatly into one of two Christian traditions. That simply does not reflect …

Survey: Few Americans and Canadians Say They Are ‘Financially Fulfilled’ | National News

Key Takeaways Fewer than one in five Americans and Canadians report being “financially fulfilled.” Nearly one third of Americans and more than 40% of Canadians say they are experiencing financial stress.  Those reporting stress would like more money to pay bills and reduce their debt. Only a small percentage of Americans and Canadians describe themselves as financially fulfilled and having enough money to support the lifestyle they desire. For Americans that number is 16%, and for Canadians it is even lower at 12%, according to the first Edward Jones and Gallup Money and Meaning survey on financial fulfillment released early Tuesday morning. At the same time, 32% of U.S. adults and 41% of Canadian adults experience consistent financial stress, where they struggle to meet their obligations and need to make trade-offs between financial and life goals, while feeling a lack of control over their finances. The largest share in each country describe themselves as “financially conflicted,” making progress toward their goals yet experiencing ongoing financial strain. The survey took place from late March to early …

Around 1 in 5 young people use AI chatbots for mental health advice: survey

Nearly 1 in 5 adolescents and young adults are turning to AI chatbots for advice when they’re sad, angry, nervous or stressed, according to a new study. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The findings, from the research institute RAND, represent an increase from early 2025, when the nonprofit conducted a similar survey. At the time, around 13% of respondents said they used chatbots for such advice, but the share rose to 19% in the group’s latest survey in November, the results of which were published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. “It’s a sad number, because you’d hope that young people would have the sorts of supportive relationships that they would feel comfortable and empowered reaching out to those around them,” said Ryan McBain, a senior policy researcher at RAND and the lead author of the study. For the new survey, McBain and his team asked people ages 12 to 21 whether they had used a service like ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Character.AI for mental …

Abortion, Israel and homosexuality top clergy’s political topics, survey finds

(RNS) — Two-thirds of U.S. adults who regularly attend religious services say their clergy have spoken about at least one key political issue — most prominently, abortion, Israel or homosexuality — in recent months. But what clergypersons say about such topics varies depending on their viewpoint, and sometimes, their religious affiliation, the Pew Research Center found in a survey published Wednesday (May 27). Researchers asked about a total of seven political or social topics — including immigration, U.S. military action in Iran, the environment and people who are transgender. “When people do hear the clergy speak about these topics, they report that they tend to hear more about opposing abortion than supporting abortion rights, opposing homosexuality than encouraging acceptance of people who are gay or lesbian, supporting Israel than criticizing it,” Becka Alper, a senior researcher at Pew, told Religion News Service. The findings are based on a survey conducted in April of 1,391 U.S. adults who say they attend religious services at least once or twice a month. Certain topics figured more prominently in …

Survey Data Show We’re Now in a Dating Recession

Survey Data Show We’re Now in a Dating Recession

How do romantic relationships form? What is the process of moving from strangers to friends to a couple to a committed partnership? From a traditional lens, most people chart the path through a period of dating. Or, at least, they used to. Research by the Institute of Family Studies suggests that the United States has entered a significant dating recession (Hawkins and colleagues, 2026). No longer are single people dating, and this is not for lack of interest. Dating Is an Appealing Practice Dating refers to an intentional “get to know you” period in which two people who are attracted to each other choose to repeatedly spend time alone together. For some, dating is casual, needs not be exclusive, and includes little talk about the future. For others, it’s a chance to assess compatibility, shared life goals, and the relationship’s long-term potential. Over time, commitment typically escalates among exclusive dating partners, leading to a committed relationship such as marriage. In other words, dating is a path toward a long-term relationship. Americans love the idea of …

Global Perceptions of US Fall Below Russia Under Trump, Survey Finds

Global Perceptions of US Fall Below Russia Under Trump, Survey Finds

May 8 (Reuters) – Global perceptions of the U.S. have deteriorated for a second consecutive year and are now worse than views of Russia, an annual study on democracy published on Friday showed, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies continue to ‌severely strain the NATO alliance. The Denmark-based ‌Alliance of Democracies Foundation, which commissioned the survey, said the U.S. was also most frequently named in response to which country posed the greatest threat to the world, after Russia and Israel. The survey did not go into details on the criteria used, but the Alliance says its aim is to defend and advance democratic values. “The fast decline of the United States’ perception around the world is saddening but not shocking,” alliance founder and former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. “U.S. foreign policy over the past 18 months has, among other things, called into question the transatlantic relationship, imposed widespread tariffs, and threatened to invade a NATO ally’s territory,” he added. Trump’s tariffs, his repeated threats to control Greenland, a fellow NATO member through …

Inflation Expectations Jump To 3 Year High As Financial Pessimism Surges: NY Fed Survey

Ahead of tomorrow’s jobs report which is expected to show a substantial slowdown from last month’s 178K surge, moments ago we got another reminder that the stagflationary iceberg remains front and center ahead of the US, after the NY Fed’s latest monthly survey of consumer expectations reported that Inflation expectations at the one-year horizon rose again to 3.64% in April from the previous month’s 3.42%, the highest since September 2023. Inflation expectations were unchanged at 3.15% for the three-year-ahead horizon and also unchanged at 3.01% at the five-year-ahead horizon in April.  The jump in year-ahead expectations took place even though 1 year gas inflation expectations tumbled sharply in April to 5.11% from 9.42% in April, which had been the highest reading since March 2022. Other commodity price change expectations also rose, but to a more limited degree: food prices are now expected to rise 5.2%, down from 6%; medical costs to rise 9.6%, also a bit lower than the 9.7% in March; the price of a college education to rise 8.8% (down from 9%); and rent prices should drop from …

Survey and Community Conversation about APA Online Programming

Survey and Community Conversation about APA Online Programming

Inside the APA As announced earlier this year, the APA’s three divisions collectively decided to suspend the  2+1 experiment, returning to hosting only in-person divisional meetings beginning in 2027. In making this difficult decision, the divisional executive committees recognized the importance of values underlying the 2+1 experiment, especially accessibility, inclusion, and sustainability. We are now organizing a community conversation about actions the APA can take to honor these values through other forms of online programming. Before turning to that conversation, we would like to share with our members some of the data that contributed to the decision the end the experiment: Fewer paper submissions. For the online meetings, there were more than 30–40% fewer papers submitted than for recent in-person meetings. Lower registration. For the Central Division, the online meeting registration was 14% lower than the 10-year average. For the Pacific Division, the online meeting registration was 28% lower than the 10-year average. Declines in APA membership due to lower participation. Many people join the APA or renew their membership to submit papers or get …
