Wisconsin congressman survives emergency plane landing, swims to safety : NPR

Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany was returning from a campaign event when the plane he was riding in made an emergency water landing on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026. Both Tiffany and the pilot escaped without serious injury. Avery Martinez/Wisconsin Public Radio hide caption toggle caption Avery Martinez/Wisconsin Public Radio A Republican congressman from Wisconsin has described how he and a pilot had to swim to safety after the plane they were traveling in made an emergency landing in a lake. Tom Tiffany said he was traveling aboard a small single-engine plane Saturday evening when the aircraft lost power as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement the pilot Leonard Boltz made an emergency landing on Lake Wausau. “As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat,” Tiffany wrote in a post on X. Tiffany, Wisconsin’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, said he was returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner in …

The critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) was released back into the Atlantic Ocean from New York’s Coney Island on July 23, following seven months of rehabilitation. According to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Pancake was recently spotted in the South Shore Estuary Reserve bays off of Long Island. These protected bays provide juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtles with critical food and shelter, “making them an ideal place for young turtles to forage and grow.” The turtle has also explored the waters further south off of Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Pancake is wearing a satellite tag on their shell, so that scientists can monitor …

How to get Teddy Swims tickets as O2 Priority pre-sale goes live today

Teddy Swims is heading on a UK tour and you can’t miss out on tickets – What More Can I Say? Georgia singer-songwriter Teddy Swims has had an interesting and diverse background. Born and raised in the southern state as the grandson of a pastor, Jaten Dimsdale was involved in both American football and musical theatre during high school. Dimsdale, now going by the name Teddy Swims, started taking his music online in 2019 and, in a fairytale twist for the modern age, one of his covers went viral, opening The Door to a deal with Warner Records. 2020 saw Teddy Swims start to write his own original music, and write he did. The singer-songwriter created over 300 songs, leading him to become a 2021 Artist to Watch by Rolling Stone. Tour and collaborations followed before he released his debut album I’ve tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) in 2023, with Part 2 arriving in 2025. Now fans have the chance to join Teddy Swims and experience his rich and soulful vocals live at The …

Bird-inspired robot swims, plunges, and flies using flapping wings

Bird-inspired robot swims, plunges, and flies using flapping wings

A lightweight robot modeled on diving birds can swim underwater, break through the surface, and continue flying without using feet or propellers. The feat exposes a difficult mechanical compromise between movement in dense water and thin air. Engineers at MIT and EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, built the flapping-wing aerial-aquatic vehicle, or FAAV, to explore how animals such as puffins, petrels, gulls, and loons move through both environments. The untethered robot weighs about 250 grams and resembles a small bird. It has a slender waterproof body, two flexible membrane wings, a battery-powered motor, and a steerable tail. Researchers can replace the wings and tail to test different dimensions and mechanical properties. Raphael Zufferey, left, and Moritz Hüsser work on their robot design. (CREDIT: John Freidah) Balanced design Experiments in tanks, a wind tunnel, indoor flight spaces, and Lake Geneva showed that one carefully balanced design could fly, swim, plunge into water, and launch back into the air. The results will appear in the journal Science. The work provides a robotic test bed for questions that are …

A new kind of robot swims the seas and soars the skies : NPR

Scientists tested their aerial-aquatic flying robot in Lake Geneva, proving that it had enough speed and power to lift itself out of the water with its wings alone. Raphael Zufferey hide caption toggle caption Raphael Zufferey Mechanical engineer Raphael Zufferey’s lab at MIT contains a giant tank filled with bright turquoise water, an array of fans that can whip up a powerful wind, and small flying robots perched everywhere you look. It’s the robots that are the stars of the show here and they’re inspired by diving seabirds like the Atlantic puffin, which uses its wings to both fly and swim. “These puffins solve this really challenging task of moving in air, in water despite the huge difference in density,” says Zufferey. He and his colleagues wanted to see if they could build a bird-sized robot that could also move through both mediums and transition between them. It’s something no one had ever done before. Raphael Zufferey, a mechanical engineer at MIT, is one of the leaders of the project to create the new robot. …

Australia 13-year-old swims for hours to save family swept out to sea

A 13-year-old boy, Austin Appelbee, saved his mother and two younger siblings after they were swept out to sea off the Australian coast. Austin swam about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to shore to raise the alarm. The family, from Perth, were on vacation and were using kayaks and paddleboards when rough conditions dragged them out to sea. Austin swam for four hours, focusing on positive thoughts, and collapsed upon reaching shore. Keywords for this article Source link
