UAE says Iran targeted tanker as Oman cites progress in Hormuz talks

REOPENING UNCERTAIN Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that talks with Oman were “approaching the final stages”, but cautioned that “this is not a sign of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz”. “The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is subject to other conditions and compensation for the violation of the memorandum of understanding by the United States,” he said, referencing the June deal. Iranian security chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr on Saturday laid out a laundry list of preconditions for reopening the strait, including an end to the “war and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq”. He also demanded the lifting of a parallel US naval blockade of Iran, the end of sanctions, the release of frozen assets, and compensation for wartime damage, according to remarks reported by Tasnim news agency. The Revolutionary Guards, the ideological arm of the Iranian military, underscored the point, saying Hormuz’s reopening had “nothing to do with the negotiations between Iran and Oman”, adding that the “enemy is forced to accept Iran’s conditions …

Hackers targeted municipal water systems in 7 states this week, FBI says

Cyberattacks targeting municipal water systems have been reported in at least seven states this week, prompting the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency to warn utilities nationwide that hackers are trying to disrupt critical water infrastructure. In a public service announcement Thursday, the agencies said water and wastewater utilities have reported incidents to the FBI, with some malicious activity degrading water operations. The announcement does not name the states. The warning comes after hackers targeted more than 30 municipal water facilities in Minnesota in an attack that had hallmarks of Iranian meddling, according to a law enforcement official. It is still under investigation. A spokesperson for Minnesota’s information technology services agency said Thursday there was no indication the breaches contaminated any municipal water supplies. The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a separate alert that some larger attacks on water infrastructure had “resulted in boil water notices and sustained manual operations,” though it did not say where. Minnesota officials and the U.S. government have not publicly attributed the malicious activity in the state …

Scotland’s Daily Record targeted by fascist-style protesters at office

Screenshot of video showing protest outside Daily Record office on Friday 24 July. Picture: Youtube screenshot The editor of the Daily Record has pledged to “continue to report without fear” after a fascist-style protest was held outside the newspaper’s office last week. Around 50 people dressed fully in black stood silently in a military-style formation in the road outside the Glasgow office building on Friday, appearing to imitate the Blackshirts of Mussolini’s National Fascist Party. They appear to have taken umbrage with coverage of their “silent protests” held around Scotland in the Daily Record, which revealed one of the men involved as a “notorious football thug”. The gathering outside the newspaper office was the fourth in Scotland this summer and the third in Glasgow. The crowd of protesters stood in a military grid formation while one member placed a flag baring a picture of a wolf alongside the name “ALBA DEFENSOR” (meaning “Defend Scotland”) and the slogan “protecting Scotland” outside the office doors. The flag was accompanied by a burning candle and the handwritten note: …

Eric Lee | Getty Images President Donald Trump on Friday defended his Department of Justice’s issuance of subpoenas to New York Times reporters, as it was revealed that Google also received a subpoena in the same criminal investigation of the leak of information about the president’s new Air Force One plane. Trump’s comments on the subpoenas came a day after the DOJ told a New York federal judge it was withdrawing those subpoenas for grand jury testimony by Times reporters and their phone records. The DOJ is investigating the leak of concerns about the security measures on the president’s Qatari-donated plane, which the Times wrote about earlier in July. Judge Arun Subramanian had warned prosecutors on Thursday that if they did not voluntarily withdraw the subpoenas, he would quash them. “We’re not after journalists,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday. “We’re after leakers. We’re after …

Major update issued on Ann Widdecombe as ‘targeted attack’ sparks murder probe | UK | News

An inquest will be opened into the death of Ann Widdecombe on Tuesday morning. The former MP and MEP was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on July 9 having suffered “serious injuries”. A 28-year-old white British man who was arrested on suspicion of her murder on July 11 is still being questioned by detectives. A hearing is scheduled at County Hall in Exeter at 10am on Tuesday to open an inquest into her death. Miss Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor after what police believe was a “targeted attack” the day before she was found. Two days after the murder arrest, counter-terrorism police took over the investigation and said the man had been further arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Terrorism laws allow a suspect to be held for up to seven days in the first instance, with investigators permitted to apply for time extensions up to 14 days in total. Kuwait reported launching defenses against another wave of Iranian projectiles overnight. The developments over the weekend further jeopardized last month’s fragile truce between the two sides, potentially raising fresh concerns over oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command said it completed an eighth straight night of strikes against Iranian targets. “CENTCOM forces successfully hit Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites to continue degrading Iranian military capabilities,” it said …

5 EastEnders spoilers next week: Joel targeted and new characters arrive

The Albert Square brat pack seek revenge on troubled Joel Marshall (Max Murray) in worrying EastEnders scenes next week. Following his release from a stretch in a young offender’s institute for beating step-mum Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) unconscious, his peers have refused to welcome him back into the community. They’re convinced that he’s still entwined in a twisted online community of misogyny, and invite him to Walford park under false pretences. While they celebrate the end of the school term, events quickly sour and he’s locked to a fence before being soaked in beer. But could this act of retribution have dire consequences for those responsible when local copper Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) learns all? He’s got his own issues, as partner Denise Fox (Diane Parish) refuses to open up to him. Junior colleague Craig Ingram (Matthew James-Bailey) steps in to help with the work/home balance, but will everything go smoothly? Plus, there’s a new love interest for Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Lauren Beale (Jacqueline Jossa) can’t resist temptation with Mark Fowler (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) and …

Empty homes targeted in Nottinghamshire area as housing waiting list nears 6,000

A council in Nottinghamshire says it has repaired and brought back into use hundreds of homes as part of efforts to cut its housing waiting list. Bassetlaw District Council’s housing waiting list has hit 5,700 live applications, new figures show, and there are only 6,546 homes available across the area. The council says demand for housing is “extremely high”, and efforts are being made to cut the waiting list down. In a report from Cllr Lynne Schuller, cabinet member for housing and estates, and Alison Craig, head of housing, they said the council has repaired 321 empty homes over the last year, which has enabled them to be re-let at some point in the future. In total, 272 homes were re-let, and 22 mutual exchanges took place. Under Right to Buy, a policy first enacted under Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a huge number of council homes have been purchased. However, there has been a failure to build an adequate number of replacements, which has contributed to the current housing crisis. According to the authority, …
