Matt Brittin takes over as BBC director general – will the former Google exec’s tech world experience be right for the job?

Matt Brittin takes over as BBC director general – will the former Google exec’s tech world experience be right for the job?

The BBC started a new chapter on May 18 when Matt Brittin took over as director general. The former senior Google executive has come to the broadcaster at a time of profound change in both media and technology. While the worlds of media and big tech face different challenges, their corporate and competitive strategies are becoming more and more intertwined. When his appointment was first announced, Brittin stated in the press release that “now, more than ever, we need a thriving BBC that works for everyone in a complex, uncertain and fast-changing world.” Here, Brittin finds himself on very familiar ground. He arrives at the BBC after 18 years at Google in the UK and Europe, the Middle East and Africa where he delivered impressive growth in audiences and revenues in exactly this type of environment. Brittin’s experience shaping how audiences find and watch video on YouTube offers the BBC perhaps its greatest near-term commercial opportunity. YouTube is fast becoming one of the most significant commercial operators in news and entertainment. Its growing dominance in …

Another California tech company lays off thousands

Another California tech company lays off thousands

The layoffs bludgeoning the tech industry continued this week as artificial intelligence reshapes the industry. Mountain View-based Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, on Wednesday said it was laying off 17% of its workforce, or about 3,000 employees, as part of its restructuring to cut costs and invest in artificial intelligence. The company said it had slowed down due to “too many organizational layers” and the cuts will simplify the organization to become a “faster, leaner, more focused company.” Intuit said it will close its offices in Reno and Woodland Hills and incur an estimated $300 million to $340 million in restructuring charges. “We believe we can serve more customers and deliver breakthrough products that fuel our customers’ success by reducing complexity and simplifying our structure,” Sasan Goodarzi, chief executive of Intuit, said in a memo shared with employees. Intuit announced the layoffs on the same day it reported its third-quarter results, in which revenue jumped 10% from a year earlier, to $8.56 billion. Intuit adds to the count of more than 114,000 tech-sector employees laid …

Parents Told To Send Letters To Schools To Get Kids’ Images Removed Online

Parents Told To Send Letters To Schools To Get Kids’ Images Removed Online

An online harms expert and therapist has urged parents to contact their children’s schools to get any images of them removed online. Catherine Knibbs shared earlier in the week that cyber criminals are taking photos of children from school websites and social media, and then manipulating them with AI to make child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Schools are then being blackmailed to send money to stop the images from being shared. “I’ve personally worked on cases like this as a child trauma and online harms expert – and the cases are sickening,” said Knibbs at the time. And she warned it’s not just photos uploaded to school websites that are at risk of being taken and manipulated, it’s family photos shared on social media, too. Her warning came after the National Crime Agency issued an alert in late April to hundreds of thouss of teachers over a “considerable increase” in financially motivated sexual extortion (sextortion). After her first video was viewed over six million times, Knibbs shared an update urging parents not to wait for …

Climate tech companies are pivoting to critical minerals

Climate tech companies are pivoting to critical minerals

Focusing on metals like niobium and tantalum won’t have the massive climate benefit that cleaner steel would, but it could generate the cash the company needs to keep going. It’s a strategy I’m noticing more as these tough industries like steel look ever tougher to succeed in with limited federal support in the US.   Boston Metal’s molten oxide electrolysis technology uses electricity to produce metals. I covered the startup last year, when it announced a major milestone for its steel business, running its pilot reactor in Massachusetts and producing a literal ton of material. Now the company’s focus has shifted, and it is going all-in on making other metals, from niobium and tantalum (used in aircraft engines and high-end steel alloys) to chromium and vanadium. The steel industry is a difficult one: It operates at a massive scale, and the product doesn’t command too high a price. Focusing on other metals, especially ones the US government deems critical, could be a way to stay afloat, maybe even long enough to meaningfully cut emissions from the …

Tech researchers are suing the Trump administration over the future of online safety

Tech researchers are suing the Trump administration over the future of online safety

“A political witch hunt” CITR’s lawsuit is the latest salvo in a yearslong battle over how the internet should be moderated, and by whom—a question that has become increasingly political and entangled in allegations of censorship.  For years, Trump and his allies have claimed to be victims of a vast conspiracy between government agencies, civil society groups, academics, and Big Tech platforms to specifically censor conservative voices online. According to this narrative, a so-called “censorship-industrial complex” helped the Biden administration subvert First Amendment protections on speech by allegedly outsourcing censorship to these groups. The State Department claims Rubio was able to implement the immigration policy because the Immigration and Nationality Act authorizes him to “render inadmissible any alien whose entry into the United States ‘would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.’” Before the current Trump administration, the statute was rarely invoked, and when it was, it was typically with more limited, specific criteria, rather than its current application against anyone who has participated in alleged censorship—an action that has no …

TikTok and YouTube ‘not safe enough’ for children, says Ofcom | Science, Climate & Tech News

TikTok and YouTube ‘not safe enough’ for children, says Ofcom | Science, Climate & Tech News

TikTok and YouTube have been criticised by the communications watchdog for “failing” to take steps to protect children “despite overwhelming evidence of harm”. Ofcom had given Facebook, Instagram, Roblox, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube until the end of April to explain what actions they were taking on age checks, preventing online grooming and tackling harmful algorithms. The regulator said social media site TikTok and video clip website YouTube had not “committed to any significant changes in response to our specific demands”, instead maintaining their feeds were “already safe for children”. Ofcom said its evidence suggested their feeds “are still not safe enough”. It said its research, published on Thursday, showed “personalised feeds are the primary route through which children encounter harmful content” online. Seven in 10 children aged 11 to 17 who took part in Ofcom’s survey in November and December last year said they had experienced harmful content online, with just 15% telling an adult about what they had seen. More than half (51%) of children said they had been asked to prove their age …

The EU Is Going Through a Trump-Fueled Breakup With Big Tech

The EU Is Going Through a Trump-Fueled Breakup With Big Tech

As tensions between President Donald Trump and Europe continue to simmer, the continent is accelerating its moves to reduce its addiction to US technology. Cities and governments are ditching Microsoft Office for open-source alternatives, shifting to European cloud hosting for local AI, and moving defense data to systems without American involvement. Nowhere has this been more clear than in France. Over the last few months, the French government has sped up its efforts to develop and deploy its own technology for government officials. The country has, arguably, emerged at the head of Europe’s growing digital sovereignty push, which aims to cut some reliance on US-based technology over concerns around data security, the Trump administration’s unpredictability, and changing prices. French budget minister David Amiel recently called for the state to “break free” from American systems and use those it can control. “We are not just explaining what we want to do,” Stéphanie Schaer, the head of DINUM, France’s digital transformation ministry, tells WIRED over a call on the nation’s video-calling platform Visio. “We already did it …

Demand Soars for Israel’s Battle-Tested Weapons Tech Despite Global Criticism of Its Wartime Conduct

Demand Soars for Israel’s Battle-Tested Weapons Tech Despite Global Criticism of Its Wartime Conduct

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — When Israeli defense officials approached Massivit last year about using its unique 3D printers to make military drone parts, CEO Yossi Azarzar jumped at the chance. Although the Israeli company had been producing large set pieces and other designs for the likes of Disney, DreamWorks and Netflix, the opportunity to instead quickly churn out large drone parts for the military was too good to ignore. “I stopped thinking about Hollywood sets,” Azarzar said. “The entertainment industry is a nice customer — defense is a necessity.” Business has been booming for the Israeli arms sector, despite widespread criticism of the country’s conduct in its wars in Gaza, with Hezbollah and with Iran. Countries that have vowed to shun Israeli weapons makers are nonetheless quietly placing orders, according to industry officials. And manufacturers, including some like Massivit with no previous military know-how, can show that their innovations are being continually combat-tested and improved. According to Israel’s Defense Ministry, Israeli weapons sales have more than doubled over the past five years, with a …
