Trump’s New AI Executive Order Has No Teeth and No Requirements

Trump’s New AI Executive Order Has No Teeth and No Requirements

Under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are being asked to submit advanced artificial intelligence models to the government for vetting on cybersecurity, confidentiality, “insider risk” and intellectual property protections. But as the executive order makes clear, AI companies are under no obligation to do much of anything.  At the end of a section ordering the creation of a vetting process in which AI companies would submit their models 30 days ahead of release, it states: “Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize the creation of a mandatory governmental licensing, preclearance, or permitting requirement for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new AI models, including frontier models.” A White House representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Frontier models are cutting-edge AI models that could pose a major security risk, such as Anthropic’s Mythos, which the company kept from public release due to cybersecurity concerns. US-based AI companies are in a race to train and release artificial intelligence models, especially …

How to keep your teeth dentist-level clean without flossing

How to keep your teeth dentist-level clean without flossing

If you’re fiber maxxing, dodging microplastics, and working out, but putting in the bare minimum on your oral health routine, you’re missing a crucial piece of the puzzle.  A growing body of research shows that issues like gum disease may cause inflammation and send bacteria into the bloodstream, potentially contributing to more serious health issues down the line. In other words, dental hygiene is integral to whole body health.  The good news is that optimizing your oral health at home is much easier than putting in reps at the gym. One of the simplest level-ups to your twice-daily brushing is the COSLUS E40 10-Speed Roll Control Oral Irrigator. A comfortable, effective way to improve your oral hygiene Here’s why.  Remove debris and reduce plaque comfortably and easily A big reason so many of us skip flossing is that it’s uncomfortable and can be a challenge to reach all of those cracks and crevices as thoroughly as we should. The COSLUS E40 10-Speed Roll Control Oral Irrigator is gentle, easy to use, and incredibly effective. Just …

tiny teeth of newly discovered species suggest it was a cradle of mammalian evolution

tiny teeth of newly discovered species suggest it was a cradle of mammalian evolution

A fossil mammal tooth smaller than a grain of rice does not announce itself loudly. It must be hard won from sediment and stone. Then, under a microscope, it reveals itself – no longer just a speck of blackness but a surface of cusps, ridges and worn edges. It is a small object, easily missed. Yet five such teeth from northern Alaska, belonging to three newly discovered species of long-extinct rodent-like mammals, hold an unexpectedly large history: of polar environments, shifting continents, winter darkness – and of mammals moving through this world that was colder, stranger and more connected than we once imagined. The fossil mammal teeth at the centre of my new study with US colleagues come from the Late Cretaceous Prince Creek Formation, around 73 million years ago. At that time, northern Alaska’s palaeolatitude was roughly 80-85°N (10-15° closer to the north pole than it is today). Our discovery shows the Arctic was not simply a cold, lifeless edge of the Cretaceous world, but a place where mammals adapted, diversified, migrated and originated. …

Ancient teeth hint at links between Denisovans and Homo erectus

Ancient teeth hint at links between Denisovans and Homo erectus

A tooth found in Sunjiadong, China, thought to belong to Homo erectus Qiaomei Fu, Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences For the first time, researchers have obtained substantial amounts of preserved protein from fossils believed to belong to the ancient human species Homo erectus. While proteins have been recovered from H. erectus fossils before, this is the first time they have revealed meaningful information about the species. The proteins suggest that H. erectus interbred with another group of hominins in Asia, the Denisovans. H. erectus was one of the most long-lived and widespread hominin species. They appear in the fossil record 2 million years ago in Africa and reached Eurasia by 1.8 million years ago – as shown by fossils from Dmanisi, Georgia. Some of them went all the way to Java in what is now Indonesia, where they survived until as recently as 108,000 years ago. In 2020, researchers led by Frido Welker at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark obtained proteins from the dental enamel of one H. erectus …

Why Runners Should Brush Their Teeth After A Long Run

Why Runners Should Brush Their Teeth After A Long Run

In 2026′s Tokyo marathon, runner and teacher Annie Tran said the secret to her speedy finish was a disposable toothbrush. “Every runner knows that mile 20 is where we have to dig deep and find what little energy we have left. After brushing my teeth, I felt revived and refreshed,” she said on Instagram. That’s one way of getting past “the wall”. But whether you’re running a marathon or not, runner Katy Laser pointed out an issue dentists say could be common among distance joggers – and might even be mitigated by a post-run brush. How might running affect your teeth? Despite not eating much sugar or drinking many fizzy beverages, Katy said in a viral TikTok that her dentist called her out on some issues, which she later attributed to gel packs. “In addition to [gels] being little packs of sugar… that are very sticky… your mouth gets drier when you run,” she explained. “It is just sticking to your teeth in a ‘desert mouth’… running gels are essentially the perfect storm of cavities”. …
