Hollywood Teamsters Reach Tentative Deal With Commercials Producers

The Hollywood Teamsters have reached a tentative labor agreement with commercials producers ahead of schedule in an attempt to avoid any disruption to work amid L.A.’s ongoing production crisis. The union and the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) shook hands on provisional three-year contracts for two covered groups before midnight on Thursday, the union announced. The deal covers around 1,500 Teamsters members, including drivers, animal trainers and wranglers, chef assistants and location scouts and managers. Details are being kept under wraps until a June 2 member meeting ahead of a ratification vote. Bargaining committees for both contracts have unanimously recommended the deal for ratification. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to the AICP for comment. Negotiations began Tuesday on the contracts, whose current iterations are set to expire on June 30. The union sought to negotiate ahead of schedule because one of its bargaining priorities, informed by members, was to “avoid disruption in current commercial production work.” Teamsters Local 399 president and chief negotiator Joshua Staheli led the talks on behalf of Local 399. …

Samsung shareholders vow legal action over tentative union deal

UNION VOTE Samsung memory chips are found in everything from consumer electronics to computer processors – with its next-gen, high-bandwidth models used to scale up AI data centres. Samsung in April said first-quarter operating profit soared roughly 750 per cent year-on-year, while its market capitalisation topped $1 trillion for the first time this month. The prospect of a strike had raised concern over the economic impact on South Korea, where semiconductors account for about 35 per cent of exports. The labour union said Wednesday that all of its members – around 70,000 staff – would participate in a vote on the tentative deal to be held between May 23 and May 28. The government hailed the outcome of last-hour negotiations, which were mediated by the labour minister. The tentative deal introduces a new bonus pool for employees in the chip division, equivalent to 10.5 per cent of the division’s business performance, with no payout cap. Of the total bonus pool, 40 per cent will be allocated across the division as a whole, while 60 per …

SAG-AFTRA and Studios Reach Tentative Contract Deal

Hollywood can breathe a sigh of relief, as another one of its major labor unions has agreed to a new contract deal without even so much as a hint of another strike. Performers’ union SAG-AFTRA and the bargaining representative for studios and streamers, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, announced that they had struck a tentative agreement on a new deal on Saturday. The parties did not go into detail on the terms of the agreement but said they would divulge more information at a later date. “SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement on terms for a successor contract to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Contracts covering motion pictures, scripted primetime dramatic television, streaming content and new media,” the union said in a statement. The tentative agreement is now subject to approval by the SAG-AFTRA National Board, which will meet in the coming days. While SAG-AFTRA had a laundry list of priorities at the bargaining table this year, a pressing issue was generative AI. The union established standards for AI-related consent …

Writers Guild forges tentative contract deal with studios

The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reportedly reached a tentative four-year deal for a new contract. Negotiations between the union and film and TV studios began in March, with union leaders prioritizing more robust healthcare benefits, streaming residuals and protections against the misuse of AI tools. Puck co-founder and reporter Matt Belloni first reported news of the tentative deal Saturday. The agreement represents a departure from standard practice, adding one more year to the WGA’s usual three-year contract. Additionally, it includes health plan and pension increases, bumps in streaming pay and protections that will police licensing for AI training. “Crucially, it protects our health plan and puts it on a sustainable path, with increased company contributions across many areas and long-needed increases to health contribution caps,” said WGA’s negotiating committee in a statement. “The new contract also builds on gains from 2023 and helps address free work challenges.” The new contract is still subject to ratification following a vote by union members. Writers Guild Reaches Tentative Four-Year Deal With Studios

The Writers Guild of America has reached a tentative four-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers group representing studios and streamers, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. On Saturday, Puck reporter Matt Belloni reported on the agreement, saying it adds one more year to the WGA’s usual three-year deal and that it includes “Health plan/pension increases, SVOD bumps [and] protection to police licensing for AI training.” THR understands from a source close to the discussions that those details are accurate.  A tentative deal still is subject to a ratification vote by members. Before talks began, the guild outlined its negotiation priorities for a new contract, including bolstering the union’s health plan, increasing AI protections and improving compensation. As THR has previously reported, the WGA’s health fund cumulatively lost $122 million in 2023 and 2024, according to tax returns, as a decline in Hollywood work and general health care inflation took their tolls. The union also sought to secure more protections against AI. Though the protections the WGA enshrined in its contract in …

Iranian evangelicals are staying put, tentative but hopeful, says pastor

ISTANBUL (RNS) — Hormoz Shariat preaches to a congregation of millions of Iranian Christians around the world, those who have scattered because of repression at home and those who, having stayed, have long been the target of arrest by Iranian authorities, frequently accused of being tools of Western powers. The Tehran-born, now Texas-based founder of Iran Alive Ministries runs an online ministry that streams 24 hours a day, sharing the gospel in Farsi, the language of Iran. Shariat also organizes a network of Iranian Christian leaders both in Iran and in the diaspora. In an interview with Religion News Service on Sunday, Shariat said since the news that Ayatollah Khamenei had been killed in a strike Saturday, plans for escape and emigration are being put on hold in the hopes that a brighter future may be dawning. “This is a day of rejoicing and hope for the people of Iran, who have suffered for so long over the years,” Shariat told Religion News Service Sunday. “With this death of the supreme leader, everybody is firstly …

The Radiance of Tentative Hope | Deborah Eisenberg

The Radiance of Tentative Hope | Deborah Eisenberg

This essay is part of a series in which writers reflect on Zohran Mamdani’s inauguration as the mayor of New York City.  Illustration by Stuart Davis In less suspenseful years a mayoral election in New York City would be a purely local event, but in precarious 2025 it was a national and even international one as well. The United States is still, in all its potentially catastrophic disarray and decline, the most powerful geopolitical entity on earth. Any little fuse might be lit at any moment by our chaotic and supremely short-sighted government, and much of the world was watching beadily: While the loopy marauders in charge were busy stuffing themselves with burgers and stuffing their properties with hideous kitsch and their giant pockets with looted money, what were we—the residents of America’s preeminent city—planning to say about our own priorities? Mamdani’s youth, the naturalness of his demeanor, and his unassuming charm give his highly improbable victory an uncanny sheen, as if, in answer to a call, he simply rose in embryonic form up from …
