The concept of “person-first language” in reference to mental health concerns literally puts the person first and then their condition. In other words, you would say “people with mental illness” instead of “the mentally ill.” Person-first language has been encouraged by many advocacy groups and organizations since the 1990s. The argument goes that person-first language is more respectful and conveys more dignity to the person. Also, it puts the primary focus on the person and doesn’t equate the person with their illness. Given my long-standing interest in this topic, I found it very interesting to read about innovative research that claims to be the first study to scientifically test the effects of using person-first versus non-person-first language. The study was simple but ingenious. Three groups of participants were used: 1) undergraduate college students; 2) adult community residents; and 3) professional counselors and counselors in training. Each of these three groups was split in half. One half of each group completed a survey about attitudes towards “people with mental illnesses.” The other half of each group …

The departure of 27 officials in high-ranking positions far outpaces the total numbers in recent prior administrations, including Trump’s first term, when 11 Senate-confirmed officials in Cabinet department positions left their roles over the course of the four years. The data analyzed by the Partnership for Public Service did not include departures of Senate-confirmed Cabinet department officials who were nominated under different administrations, nor did it include U.S. attorneys, U.S. marshals or ambassadors. Following the sudden July 11 death of Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Gov. BUDAPEST, July 18 (Reuters) – Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok has signed ⁠a ⁠constitutional amendment passed by Prime Minister ⁠Peter Magyar’s ruling Tisza party that ends his term as head of state, Sulyok ​said in a statement on Saturday. The legislation was part of Magyar’s drive to dismantle former Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s bastions of power, ‌for which Magyar says he received a ‌strong mandate from voters after ousting the right-wing leader in an April election landslide. The amendment will end Sulyok’s term immediately, ⁠citing society’s “serious loss ⁠of confidence” in a leader elected in early 2024 by lawmakers from Orban’s ​nationalist Fidesz party. Sir Sadiq Khan would win a fourth term as Mayor of London despite a surge in support for the Greens, according to a new poll. The Savanta survey for the Mile End Institute, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), showed Labour significantly ahead of all other parties in the mayoral race.
