The trick that offloads intrusive thoughts so your brain can actually work

The trick that offloads intrusive thoughts so your brain can actually work

We treat focus as something you’re either engaging in, or opting out of, but what if the truth points to focus as being something you’ve been trained out of by our attention economy? David Epstein, author of Range and Inside the Box, breaks down what’s actually happening inside the brain when we multitask, and why “just focusing” is a solution that doesn’t hold up to reality. This video The trick that offloads intrusive thoughts so your brain can actually work is featured on Big Think. Source link

The rising dust, the dry and hot wind, the curious scurrying insects, and most of all, the sturdy thorns of the blackberry bush could not rival the soft consistency of the berries in my hand, and their sweet, if slightly sour flavor. Being able to feast on our loot with my sibling in the late afternoon, surrounded by the smell of pines, rosemary, and sea salt, made each scratch we got from blackberrying more than worth it, a proud war wound. I did not take many of my childhood habits into my adulthood. However, to take my bike, some huge glass jars, maybe a small step ladder, and to wander alone the nearby parks and forests in search of blackberries is still my favorite way to spend a weekend day in July. Not only that: I am slowly expanding my foraging skills. Last October, I went through the tedious task of picking elderberries …

I tried the non-surgical treatment loved by Victoria Beckham, and here’s my honest thoughts

I tried the non-surgical treatment loved by Victoria Beckham, and here’s my honest thoughts

I’m realistic about ageing, and honestly not interested in trying to look 25 again, but over the years I have noticed changes to my skin tone and texture. Even with foundation on, my skin no longer had that healthy, lit-from-within quality it once did. And that was the problem: I never went anywhere without foundation. So when I started hearing more about Exion – a non-invasive skin treatment reportedly loved by Victoria Beckham – I was curious. The treatment, offered at ACL Cosmetic Clinic, combines radiofrequency energy and targeted ultrasound technology to improve skin quality, firmness and hydration over time, without needles or downtime. According to the clinic, Exion is designed to stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, helping create a plumper, firmer and more radiant appearance gradually over a course of treatments. EXION stimulates the skin’s natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid Unlike more aggressive laser procedures or invasive cosmetic treatments, the appeal of Exion is that it feels subtle and cumulative. It’s a non-invasive in-clinic treatment …

Brain scans reveal how a teenager’s reaction to loss connects impulsivity and suicidal thoughts

Brain scans reveal how a teenager’s reaction to loss connects impulsivity and suicidal thoughts

A neuroimaging study of adolescents found that the association between impulsivity and future suicidal thoughts depends on how the right anterior insula, a region of the brain involved in processing emotions, reacts to loss. In adolescents whose anterior insula reacted with strong activation to a small monetary loss, high impulsivity was associated with elevated suicidal thoughts a year later. In contrast, in adolescents whose anterior insula did not react strongly to loss, higher impulsivity was associated with lower levels of suicidal thoughts. The paper was published in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health matters, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 (or 800-273-8255) or visit the NSPL site. Suicide is currently the second leading cause of death among U.S. youth. Despite ongoing prevention efforts, statistics show that youth suicide rates have increased in recent years. Usually, suicidal behavior is preceded by periods during which a person thinks about death and suicide, a concept known as suicidal ideation. These thoughts can range from general …

Who decides what AI tells you? Campbell Brown, once Meta’s news chief, has thoughts

Who decides what AI tells you? Campbell Brown, once Meta’s news chief, has thoughts

Campbell Brown has spent her career chasing accurate information, first as a renowned TV journalist, then as Facebook’s first, and only, dedicated news chief. Now, watching AI reshape how people consume information, she sees history threatening to repeat itself. This time, she’s not waiting for someone else to fix it. Her company, Forum AI — which she discussed recently with TechCrunch’s Tim Fernholz at a StrictlyVC evening in San Francisco — evaluates how foundation models perform on what she calls “high-stakes topics” — geopolitics, mental health, finance, hiring — subjects where “there are no clear yes-or-no answers, where it’s murky and nuanced and complex.” The idea is to find the world’s foremost experts, have them architect benchmarks, then train AI judges to evaluate models at scale. For Forum AI’s geopolitics work, Brown has recruited Niall Ferguson, Fareed Zakaria, former Secretary of State Tony Blinken, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and Anne Neuberger, who led cybersecurity in the Obama administration. The goal is to get AI judges to roughly 90% consensus with those human experts, a …

11 Very Odd Ways AI Is Making Everyone Think & Sound Pretty Much Exactly The Same

The rise of AI has changed society drastically in the span of just a few years. AI programs have been available to the public since 2022, and in those short four years, they have had a dramatic impact on how we do just about everything, from homework assignments to daily work tasks. At first, it may not feel like AI has impacted the way you operate. Sure, you may ask ChatGPT or Grok a question every now and then, but for the most part, you feel the exact same way you always have. Still, while you may feel the same, there’s no denying that there are some very odd ways AI is making everyone think and sound pretty much exactly the same. Here are 11 very odd ways AI is making everyone think and sound pretty much exactly the same 1. We’re less and less comfortable with uncertainty Kmpzzz | Shutterstock Let’s face it, nobody likes to be uncertain. Fearing the idea of looking dumb, most people will do whatever it takes to protect their …

understanding how Ofsted inspections risk suicidal thoughts in teachers

understanding how Ofsted inspections risk suicidal thoughts in teachers

Ofsted, the schools inspectorate in England, was the subject of a UK parliamentary inquiry after the death by suicide of Ruth Perry, headteacher of Caversham Primary school in Berkshire, in 2023. The coroner’s report had concluded that Perry’s death was “suicide, contributed to by an Ofsted inspection”. The parliamentary inquiry called for submissions of evidence about Ofsted from members of the public. Our recent research has analysed the 233 published submissions, many of which were from teachers. One submission to the inquiry included an impact statement by a headteacher written in 2022. It read: The manner in which the inspection was conducted and the lack of integrity from the Lead Inspector has meant that my family have had to support me through suicidal thoughts and through countless occasions of being in floods of tears as soon as I think back to that day. “It seems incredible that an issue like the conduct of school inspection should be a life-and-death matter, but so indeed it has become,” the submission from her school stated. Theory of suicide …

Thoughts on Theology in Science by Kenneth Francis: Berkeley Vs Solipsism

Thoughts on Theology in Science by Kenneth Francis: Berkeley Vs Solipsism

Theology in Science, written by Kenneth Francis, is a fascinating book that covers a variety of topics from quantum theory to the dream life of spiders. For myself, the portion of the book I found the most interesting was the discussion on George Berkeley and the philosophical idea known as solipsism.  Solipsism claims the only thing that is sure to exist is one’s own mind. This is an idea that I find particularly irritating. If I am the only thing that exists, and my reality is some sort of byproduct of my own imagination, then I have some words for the manager. Speaking from a storytelling standpoint, I’ve always found the idea irritating because realities that are essentially an illusion are detrimental to stakes in a plot. There’s a reason the Matrix franchise has to consistently return to reality. If the whole movie were set in the Matrix and Neo died, nobody would have much reason to care because he’s probably still alive somewhere and can be rebooted at some point. In order for the suspension of disbelief to take place, the audience …

How to Stop Fighting Your Thoughts and Emotions

How to Stop Fighting Your Thoughts and Emotions

One of the biggest lessons on human flourishing comes from a formula for suffering: suffering = pain x resistance. To witness this calculus in action, consider a recent moment of discontent that resulted from an undesirable event. Upon careful investigation, we’d likely realize that much of our psychological suffering was due to the deluge of gloomy thoughts, feelings, and judgments we unleashed upon ourselves in reaction to the event. It’s as if our fading fortunes weren’t bad enough, we had to punish ourselves further with shame and self-criticism. Pain is inevitable in a human life. But the considerable say we have in the second variable of the formula—resistance—gives us a pathway for altering the outcome. One antidote to resistance is acceptance: simply being with the difficult emotion without attempting to control or alter its quality, duration, or intensity. It’s a counterintuitive response to pain. Yet acceptance-based interventions, such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), have shown promise in alleviating human suffering, with research demonstrating reductions in stress, pain, anxiety, depression, and other psychopathological symptoms. Acceptance …
