Carney Says the New Canadian-Built Bridge Across Detroit River That Trump Threatened Will Open

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, jointly owned by Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan, is set to take place on Friday, while the bridge itself is expected to open to traffic later this month. Invitations for a Friday afternoon event to “mark the next step for the Gordie Howe International Bridge” have been sent, according to an invitation obtained by The Associated Press. The event follows a recent conversation between Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private talks. In February, Trump demanded that Canada turn over at least half the ownership of the bridge to the U.S. federal government and agree to other unspecified demands in one of his many salvos over cross-border trade issues. The bridge, which would connect Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit and would be a vital economic artery between Canada and the United States, had been expected to open early this year, according to information …

George Santos threatened me after I wrote about him : NPR

Former U.S. Rep. George Santos is being investigated for trades on the prediction market Kalshi where he appears to have profited by deceiving the public about attending Trump’s State of the Union address in February. Julia Demaree Nikhinson/AP/AP hide caption toggle caption Julia Demaree Nikhinson/AP/AP I was winding down my work day here in Los Angeles when my phone rang at 5:37 p.m. from a blocked number. It was former Congressman George Santos. He was boiling with rage. The day before, I published a story revealing that the Justice Department and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission had opened investigations into his trading activity on the prediction market site Kalshi. Officials at the company detected that he was betting against his appearance at Trump’s State of the Union address in February, just as he posted a video on X gushing to his followers about how excited he was to attend. With the help of three sources, I was able to confirm that Kalshi referred the matter to federal authorities in the Southern District of New York …

Bessent Warns Oman On Hormuz Toll Scheme, After Trump Threatened To ‘Blow Up’ US Ally

On an official level at least, Oman remains a close strategic partner and key ally of the United States in the Middle East; however, that relationship has been severely strained this month amid apparent Iranian-Omani cooperation regarding a potential toll system for the Strait of Hormuz. This of course flies in the face of the US posture in the region. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is the latest top Trump admin official to chastize Oman: “The United States Government will not tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz,” he said on X Thursday. “Oman, in particular, should know that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved – directly or indirectly – in facilitating tolls for the Strait and any willing partners will be penalized,” Bessent continued. “All nations should reject outright any efforts by Iran to disrupt the free flow of commerce. Tehran’s days of terrorizing the region and the world are over.” Sky News/Getty Images Starting a week ago, official ‘discussions’ between Oman and Iran were widely reported: …

This common reaction to feeling threatened can trap you in a jealousy loop

This common reaction to feeling threatened can trap you in a jealousy loop

When romantic partners feel threatened by a potential rival, they tend to prioritize defending their bond over routinely nurturing it. Over time, this defensive focus can feed a loop of escalating jealousy and declining relationship satisfaction. These behavioral patterns were outlined in a recent paper published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. Everyday efforts to keep a relationship functioning take several forms. Motivation experts frequently categorize human behavior as either chasing a positive reward or avoiding a negative outcome. A newer framework divides human motivation into three distinct categories. These include maintenance goals, protection goals, and progress goals. Maintenance goals involve actions that keep a current situation stable without addressing an immediate problem. In a romantic relationship, this might look like regular date nights, dividing household chores evenly, asking a partner about their day, or consistently providing emotional support. Old psychological models assumed that people were either running toward something good or running away from something bad. But keeping things exactly as they are requires its own targeted type of energy. Protection goals …

‘Incel’ teenager who collected bomb-making videos and threatened school shooting is jailed | UK News

A former Army cadet obsessed with far-right ideology and the Islamic State has been jailed after he terrorised two schoolgirls, collected bomb-making videos and threatened a Valentine’s Day shooting. Dihan Rahman was aged 17 when he made a Nazi salute and held a rope noose in selfies, as well as posting personal details of two girls and a teacher online during a stalking campaign. The schoolboy was said to have an extreme hatred of women and Jewish people and often viewed neo-Nazi content. He also made threats to attack his school’s prom via Snapchat and TikTok, as well as to carry out a school massacre. Rahman’s electronic devices and notes revealed a “mixed” ideology touching on the extreme right-wing, Islamic State, Incel and misogyny, prosecutor Serena Gates KC said. She told the Old Bailey: “The common ground is the hatred of Jews and there is also material on how women are treated within those ideologies.” The defendant, now aged 19, had also been a “trusted” administrator of an extreme right-wing network on Telegram, having pretended …

Apple Threatened to Pull Grok From App Store Over Sexualized Images

Apple Threatened to Pull Grok From App Store Over Sexualized Images

Apple privately warned Elon Musk’s xAI company in January that it would remove the Grok app from the App Store unless the company put a stop to the chatbot’s nude and sexualized deepfakes, according to a letter Apple sent to U.S. senators and obtained by NBC News ($). Earlier this year, Grok’s AI capabilities came under scrutiny after X users shared nonconsensual sexualized images of women and children created by the app, many of which were based on photos of real people. What followed was a confusing rollout of moderation changes to Grok, some of which could be easily bypassed. Publicly, Apple did not comment on the controversy at the time, but it did respond, and was in fact the instigator of the changes. Internally, the company had found both X and Grok in violation of its App Store guidelines and demanded its developers submit a content moderation plan, the letter reveals. According to the letter, Apple rejected an initial fix from xAI as insufficient, saying the “changes didn’t go far enough,” and Apple warned …

Historic decline in U.S. overdose deaths threatened by changing street drug supply : NPR

A forensic chemist with the Drug Enforcement Administration holds vials of fentanyl pills at a DEA research laboratory in this file photo. Fentanyl deaths are plunging in the U.S, but the recovery is threatened by a new “synthetic soup” of toxic street drugs. Mark Schiefelbein/AP/AP hide caption toggle caption Mark Schiefelbein/AP/AP Earlier this year, Naida Rutherford, the coroner in Richland County, South Carolina, was helping investigate what appeared to be a mysterious overdose. The case had many of the hallmarks of a typical fentanyl death. “Every sort of physical manifestation, like the foam coming from the mouth and nose, as if they had an overdose,” Rutherford said. “Their blood tested negative for any substance, which was very odd.” Her team was stumped, so Rutherford expanded the testing, looking for new compounds. “That’s where we found the cychlorphine,” she told NPR, referring to one of the incredibly potent synthetic opioids spreading fast in the U.S. street drug supply. “This is the first time we’ve seen it in South Carolina, which is very scary because none of …

Iran war negotiations with U.S. threatened by Lebanon attacks

U.S. Vice President JD Vance speaks to the media before boarding Air Force Two for expected departure to Pakistan for talks on Iran, at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, U.S., April 10, 2026. Jacquelyn Martin | Via Reuters The speaker of Iran’s parliament warned Friday that scheduled negotiations to end the war with the United States cannot begin unless Israel halts attacks on Lebanon and unless the U.S. releases Tehran’s frozen assets. Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued that ultimatum after an American delegation led by Vice President JD Vance flew to Islamabad for talks with Iran, which reportedly will include Ghalibaf and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Ghalibaf’s conditions strain Iran’s already fragile two-week ceasefire with the U.S., which began Tuesday. “Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations,” Ghalibaf said in an X post. “These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin,” he wrote. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has expressed …

“Reasonable discussion”: Pentagon denies reports that official threatened Pope Leo

“Reasonable discussion”: Pentagon denies reports that official threatened Pope Leo

Relations between Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration are under intense scrutiny this week following reports of a contentious January meeting between a Vatican envoy and Defense Department officials. The meeting came after the pope directly addressed the U.S. war in Iran during his State of the World speech in January. In his speech, the pope warned of “escalating tensions” worldwide. War is back in vogue, and a zeal for war is spreading,” he said. In the days following, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby met with Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Vatican’s U.S. representative, in a closed-door meeting at the Pentagon, according to reporting from The Free Press. Colby reportedly gave the cardinal a dressing down. “The United States,” Colby said, “has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world. The Catholic Church had better take its side.” A separate U.S. official reportedly brought up the fourteenth-century Avignon papacy. This was a time tensions between the French monarchy and the papacy that lead to a seven-decade-long relocation of the papacy …
