Argentina has threatened to seize the Falklands. There is one problem: their military is in tatters

Argentina has threatened to seize the Falklands. There is one problem: their military is in tatters

Javier Milei told his nation on Thursday that Argentina would “prevail” in its efforts to reclaim the Falkland Islands, after Donald Trump said he would reconsider the United States’ long-standing neutrality and cast doubt on Britain’s ability to defend itself. Emboldened by Trump’s blessing, the Argentine president said in a televised address that he would sanction oil companies drilling in the British overseas territory in a move likely to escalate tensions with London. “It is clear that they are in decline,” he said. “However, Argentina is flourishing, and it will prevail … Our national claim is facing a clear and present danger and requires a proportional response. We will not allow it.” The comments came after president Trump suggested the United States might not come to Britain’s aid in the event of an attack and questioned whether London would have the capabilities to fend off another invasion on its own. The former Pointless and House Of Games host recently sat down for an interview with The Times, where he reflected on the film’s production. In The Times’ piece, it was noted that “many egregious script departures” had been made in the movie compared to its source material. Meanwhile, the article’s author claimed that “the end result was a grave disappointment” despite its star-studded cast and esteemed director in Chris Columbus, whose past work includes Mrs Doubtfire, Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter movies. “I can’t really talk about the film very much,” Richard claimed. He then added: “It was only one book. The other books I would like to adapt myself.” Richard did, however, make a point of saying that it had been a “lot of fun” and “really cool” meeting cast members Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, producer Steven Spielberg “and everyone else” involved in the project. Pentagon policy chief tells NATO allies U.S. wants European-led defense of continent

BRUSSELS, Aug 27 (Reuters) – The Pentagon’s policy chief told NATO members on Thursday that the alliance must adapt and that he wants to hear from allies ‌as part of a review of U.S. forces in Europe he said was ‌meant to enable a more European-led defence of the continent. Washington announced a six-month review of U.S. troop deployments in Europe in June and in recent weeks sent NATO members a questionnaire covering issues ranging from defense spending to strategy, procurement and support for U.S. foreign policy priorities. The review will create at least four sets of options for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by November 6, well ahead of ‌a December deadline for its completion, according to a document seen by Reuters. The process has fueled questions among European officials about whether the U.S. administration is seeking to use the review as a real consultation, symbolic gesture or negotiating tactic. “We believe that in order to survive and indeed thrive, NATO must change,” U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby told ambassadors representing …

South Korean police seek indictments of officials for lying about concrete structure in Jeju Air crash

South Korean police seek indictments of officials for lying about concrete structure in Jeju Air crash

South Korea’s police said Thursday they were seeking indictments of seven transport ministry officials over the 2024 Jeju Air crash that killed all but two of the 181 people on board. The Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air skidded off the runaway at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea after its landing gear failed to deploy, slamming into a concrete structure and bursting into flames. Authorities have found traces of bird strike in the plane’s engines and the plane’s two black boxes stopped recording about four minutes before the crash. Many experts say the concrete structure, which housed a set of antennas called a localiser that guides aircraft during landings, must be blamed for the crash as well, as they should have been built with more easily breakable materials. Police said Thursday the seven officials were involved in the production of media statements that stated the localisers were installed in accordance with relevant domestic and international regulations, though that was not true. Police said they referred the cases to prosecutors, asking for the seven …
