Knicks Looking to Take Command of NBA Finals, Spurs Hoping to Tie the Title Series

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Jalen Brunson was the star of Game 1 of the NBA Finals, willing the New York Knicks to a series-opening win. Victor Wembanyama, even while struggling from the field, put up big numbers for the San Antonio Spurs in his finals debut as well. The finals, though, tends to get won by the sum of the other parts. Game 2 of the title series is Friday night in San Antonio, with the Spurs hoping to pull into a tie before the series heads to New York — and the Knicks aiming at becoming the first team since Houston in 1995 to start the NBA Finals with two road wins. Tipoff is at 8:42 p.m. EDT and the game will be aired on ABC. The Spurs are 6.5-point favorites. New York got 30 points from Brunson in the Game 1 win, in which the Knicks rallied from 14 points down in the third quarter and closed the game on an 11-0 run. And while Brunson got tons of credit, the Knicks pointed …

The best new popular science books of June 2026 include a new title from Alice Roberts

Alice Roberts has a new book out in June David Stock This is a month to look out for some powerful new books, with authors taking on challenges of all sorts and imagining whole new worlds. There are fresh ways to think about a cancer diagnosis, a book tackling the real inner world of hormones, in which we are all hormonal all the time, plus a major re-envisioning of the natural world where we abandon the shallows of competition for the depth and intricacies of connection and togetherness. Welcome to the symbiocene. It’s quite hard going to get an up-to-date grip on human evolution, even for the best-briefed adult, so a book with sophisticated text and excellent illustrations and diagrams can only be a good thing. Especially if it is curated and edited by Alice Roberts, biological anthropologist, palaeopathologist, broadcaster – and professor of public engagement in science at the University of Birmingham, UK. She worked with a generous-sized international team of experts in many fields of human evolution, including archaeology, palaeontology, anthropology and cognitive …

The final stage in Rome concluded with a sprint as Italian Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) thrilled his home crowd with a spectacular attack to win the stage. Zohran Mamdani on Celebrating Arsenal’s Title and Making the World Cup Affordable

Zohran Mamdani on Celebrating Arsenal’s Title and Making the World Cup Affordable

Arsenal chose Zohran Mamdani at around the turn of the century, when, aged 10, his uncle bought him a set of fridge magnets bearing images of some of the team’s leading players—Sylvain Wiltord, David Seaman, Sol Campbell, Thierry Henry. He was captivated. When we spoke, it felt only right to find out which footballers lived longest in his imagination, and so I asked for his dream Arsenal XI. He went for David Raya in goal, plus Gabriel and William Saliba as the centre backs, for whom he had “a real soft spot”. And, “for nostalgia’s sake,” Gaël Clichy and Bacary Sagna as full-backs. “OK,” said Mamdani. He was pensive now, gathering his composure as he came to select the team’s midfield and forward positions. “This is now difficult.” In central midfield, he chose Cesc Fàbregas and Patrick Vieira, the France World Cup winner who would smear Vicks VapoRub over his shirt to assist his breathing when he was tired: a tactic which Mamdani had emulated in his own playing days, but apparently to little effect. …
