Pilates for Runners: How the Workout Can Help You Train for a Marathon

No matter how little or long you’ve been in the running game, you’ll know that there is a lot more to it than just… running. Hunting down the comfiest pair of Asics and meal prepping around your training are important but what actually keeps your legs turning when it matters most on race day? Strength drills, mobility exercises, and yes, Pilates. Implementing this German-born discipline into your weekly running routine—especially if you’re embarking on a marathon—is one of the most effective ways of improving your stride. It deepens your stability, hip control, and core strength to name just a few things, so that when you’re about to hit the wall at 21 miles, your form and technique kick carry you over the finish line. We asked some experts to explain why Pilates has gained such momentum in the running world, including Bryony Deery who has designed an entire exercise platform around this very thing. What is Pilates? Pilates is an ever-growing practice that has branched out into different approaches (classical, reformer, Lagree). However, at its …

I hate push-ups—here are the other exercises I use to train my upper body

When my personal training clients tell me they hate push-ups—mostly, because they find them too difficult—I have to agree with them, although for a different reason. I suffer from tendonitis in my right hand and during flare-ups it becomes particularly difficult to do exercises that put pressure on my wrist. That means that I tend to avoid push-ups, and instead, I use a collection of upper-body moves, which, when done as one workout, hit the same muscles. Latest Videos From A push-up primarily relies on the pectoral (chest) muscles, but it recruits a selection of other muscle groups, too. It works the triceps (the muscles in the back of the arms), the anterior deltoids (the front of the shoulders) as well as the core—specifically the abs, and obliques on the side of the body, which help maintain the plank position. You may like Despite swapping out push-ups, it’s not to say I don’t rate them. The fact that I have to turn to the five exercises below to generate a similar stimulus shows just how …

Hot Pilates Founder Shannon Nadj Wants You to Train Like an Athlete in Her FIFA World Cup-Inspired Workouts

Just in time for the FIFA World Cup, Hot Pilates founder Shannon Nadj is giving her celebrity-loved workouts a sporty summer makeover with soccer-inspired classes. Think: stability balls standing in for soccer balls, plenty of lower-body work, and exercises designed to have clients feeling more like athletes than ever. Franke Mark “We’re bringing a fun, energetic team atmosphere into the studio,” Nadj tells ET while celebrating the launch of her Bikini Body World Cup Challenge. “Expect challenges that focus on agility, coordination, balance, and endurance, which are all qualities that are essential in soccer. The goal is to celebrate movement and community while creating a workout that feels playful and engaging.” While the classes will still deliver the signature full body burn Hot Pilates regulars know and love, expect a little extra attention on legs this month. Jesse Alexander “We’ll definitely incorporate lower-body work because strong legs are essential for athletic performance, but every class will include core strength and cardio as well,” the fitness instructor explains. “Soccer requires power, endurance, balance, and agility, so …

From churches and castles to wonderfully weird Portmeirion: exploring Wales’s north-west coast on foot and by train | Wales holidays

From churches and castles to wonderfully weird Portmeirion: exploring Wales’s north-west coast on foot and by train | Wales holidays

From the graveyard of St Michael’s in Ynys, Wales, the view was ravishing: the Italianate oddity of Portmeirion sparkled on the opposite shore; the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) rippled in the distance; and, within the River Dwyryd’s broad swirl, sat the tidal island of Ynys Gifftan. “No one’s lived there for years,” said a passerby pointing to the isle, “but it’s just been put up for sale – £350,000, if you fancy it.” I rather did, but sadly my modest savings don’t stretch that far. Wales’s “armpit”, geographically speaking – which is how some people refer to that chunk of Gwynedd where estuaries perspire into Cardigan Bay before it curves round the outstretched Llŷn peninsula – looked like a spectacular place to be marooned. I’d come here because I thought it might be a particularly good place for coastal exploring by rail and on foot. The Cambrian Line, which starts in Shrewsbury, runs west to the bay, before turning north along Gwynedd’s shore. Here, it’s accompanied by the Wales Coast Path and, launched in 2024, …

Woman Fatally Stabbed “Two Dozen Times” In Brazen Daytime Attack On Atlanta’s MARTA Train

Woman Fatally Stabbed “Two Dozen Times” In Brazen Daytime Attack On Atlanta’s MARTA Train

A woman riding a MARTA train in Atlanta was killed in a brutal daytime attack Saturday, suffering nearly 20 stab wounds in what investigators say was a seemingly random act of violence, according to the NY Post. Police allege that 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews approached 66-year-old Margaret Swan after boarding the train Saturday morning. Surveillance video reportedly shows him lingering near Swan before pulling out a knife and attacking her. According to court documents, Swan cried out and attempted to get away, but the suspect allegedly restrained her and repeatedly stabbed her. Investigators say the assault continued as the train neared Oakland City Station. Matthews allegedly forced Swan to the floor and remained over her while she lay gravely injured. The NY Post writes that after the attack, authorities say the suspect exited the train carrying the knife, leaving Swan motionless inside the rail car. Responding officers and emergency personnel tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead. The knife believed to have been used in the attack was later recovered. Witness descriptions helped …

Tripe soup and bitter coffee in the dining car: a nostalgic ride through Poland on a communist-era train | Poland holidays

Tripe soup and bitter coffee in the dining car: a nostalgic ride through Poland on a communist-era train | Poland holidays

Trainspotters jostled on platform 2 as sunshine lit up the polished olive-green carriages of the 11:07 from Warszawa Główna (Warsaw main station) to Poznań. As I was readying to board, a man, sporting bow tie and braces, zipped past me, making it to the steps first. Excitement was palpable. But then this was no ordinary train, but rather an event. A throwback in time. The Polish parliament had declared 2026 as the Year of Polish Railways, and there is a double jubilee under way: the 25th anniversary of the long-distance operator PKP Intercity and the centenary of Polish state railways. To celebrate, a series of retro rail journeys called Nieśpieszny (“Unhurried”) has been launched. Every weekend over the spring and summer (at least until the end of August, with more departures likely), a fully refurbished train from the 1980s, with livery matching the era, departs from a different region in Poland, from the mountainous south to the Baltic coast in the north. When my friend Mariusz mentioned this to me, knowing that I take an …

The man, believed to be in his 40s, broke free from the vehicle while it was stationary on the A1, Hertfordshire Police and British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed in a joint statement. Following his escape, BTP officers conducted a search of the surrounding area, during which they discovered a casualty on the tracks close to Welwyn North railway station. Two members of staff from a transport contractor were also taken to hospital during the escape attempt after “an altercation in the van,” though neither is believed to have sustained serious injuries. Formal identification of the body is yet to take place, although police have confirmed that the man’s family has been informed of the incident. The escape took place at approximately 9am on Thursday, the force confirmed. Hertfordshire Police has since referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and a file …
