The equalities watchdog has ruled that single-sex spaces, like changing rooms and toilets, can only be used on the basis of biological sex. It states transgender people should instead use a third or a gender-neutral space. It also warns that leaving the community without access to any services or facilities would be unlikely to be proportionate and could be discriminatory. The EHRC’s delayed code of practice comes after the Supreme Court ruled that sex in the Equality Act refers to biological sex in 2025. Councils, NHS trusts and businesses had postponed updating their policies on how to accommodate for single-sex spaces while waiting for the EHRC advice. Seemingly out of nowhere, a bill drafted in January 2025–House Resolution 2616 (HR 2616)–has not only been revived, but it’s also swiftly made its way to the United States House floor and passed in a vote of 217 to 198, with 15 abstentions. Eight Democrats crossed the aisle to align with their Republican colleagues, supporting a bill that would revoke students’ rights, autonomy, and access to books and information in public schools nationwide. Of course, the bill’s quick revival and passage isn’t actually a surprise. We’re in the days before a long weekend and the kickoff of summer, with gas prices nearly 50% higher than one year ago and the cost of living continuing to skyrocket. A Muslim woman is in line for a payout from NHS England over a policy allowing transgender women to use female toilets. The employee, who has not been named, was working at Quarry House in Leeds in 2017 when the body adopted policies that allowed her trans colleagues to use facilities corresponding with their gender identity, rather than their biological sex, once they achieved “full-time presentation… in the new gender role”. Five years after the policy was implemented, the woman, who has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and holds gender-critical beliefs, was asked to attend a “trans awareness session” when a colleague transitioned.
