Europe races to make it harder for Trump to rattle NATO – POLITICO

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson warned against inserting a “European preference” into EU defense procurement rules. “My responsibility, first and foremost, is to get weapons in the hands of these warfighters,” Jonson said on Saturday. “Sometimes that can be from Europeans, sometimes it can be from the Americans or somewhere it can be from Asia.” Jonson’s warning landed weeks after Thomas DiNanno, the U.S. under secretary of state for arms control, traveled to Poland, Romania and Estonia. The State Department said his Warsaw meetings with U.S. industry representatives included discussions on “EU defense protectionism” and the “America First Arms Transfer Strategy.” Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu also framed the balance between equipping troops and building up local defense industries. “Localization was very important, investment in jobs at home was very important,” she said on Saturday. But Bucharest also wants to “create the space to advance in the engagement with the United States,” she said, adding that Romania’s procurement plan included “more than $2 billion” of U.S. kit. That need to calibrate domestic interests against keeping …

Merz wouldn’t tell his kids to move to America anymore – POLITICO

“I am a great admirer of America,” Merz added, drawing laughter from the crowd, “but right now my admiration is not increasing.” The comments emphasize the growing rift between Berlin and Washington after weeks of public clashes between Merz and President Donald Trump. The German leader — who previously headed the Atlantik-Brücke, an influential network that promotes U.S.-German ties — told schoolchildren on April 28 that the American president had been “humiliated” by Iran and lacked a coherent strategy for the war that broke out in late February following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Three days later, on May 1, the Pentagon, following through on an earlier threat by Trump, announced it would withdraw 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. Despite the tensions, Merz wrote on X on Friday that he had “a good phone call” with Trump — the first since the two had publicly clashed — stressing afterward that “the U.S. and Germany are strong partners in a strong NATO.” Berlin has also turned down U.S. pleas for NATO to become directly involved …

Trump says he ‘might’ move US troops to Poland from Germany – POLITICO

U.S. President Donald Trump said he “might” move U.S. troops from Germany to Poland, as the Pentagon prepares to pull around 5,000 American soldiers out of Germany over the next year. “Poland would like that,” Trump told journalists on Friday when asked about the prospect. “We have a great relationship with Poland. I have a great relationship with the president. … I like him a lot, so that’s possible.” The Pentagon earlier this month confirmed the U.S. will withdraw 5,000 troops from military bases in Germany, following through on a threat Trump made after sparring with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran war. Trump has since gone on to warn that the Pentagon would be “cutting a lot further than 5,000.” Source link

Rubio backs NATO in Rome as US-Italy tensions simmer – POLITICO

According to Italian media, Rubio said he had not raised the issue of troop withdrawals directly with Meloni, but added that “some European countries … have refused to allow us to use those bases in a very serious emergency,” which “has created some unnecessary risks” for the United States. Ultimately, though, removing American soldiers from European bases is “a decision for the president to make,” he concluded. Tajani stressed the importance of maintaining a strong American presence in Europe. “For us, an American presence in Europe is important to strengthen NATO,” he said, adding that “a strong commitment from Europeans is also important from this point of view, something Europeans are already doing.” The atmosphere during the visit was notably warmer than in recent weeks. Rubio spoke partly in Spanish during the meetings, joking that the language was “very similar” to Italian. He also said he had been trying to learn Italian himself, but that his subscription to language app Babbel had expired. Tajani, in an effort to appease the U.S. administration, repeated Italy’s pledge …

EU agreement on US trade deal within reach, says top lawmaker – POLITICO

EU agreement on US trade deal within reach, says top lawmaker – POLITICO

Although the two sides shook hands on the trade deal at Trump’s Scottish golf resort last July, Brussels still hasn’t passed legislation to keep its side of the bargain by scrapping duties on U.S. industrial goods. The accord, criticized by many in Europe as one-sided, foresees a 15 percent U.S. duty on most European exports. Lange, a German Social Democrat, has pushed to add strong safeguards in case Trump intimidates the EU again, as the U.S. president did earlier this year when he threatened to annex Greenland, a Danish territory.  In an interview on Thursday, Lange said he was confident a deal would be reached at the next negotiating round being held either on May 12 or 19. That would pave the way for a plenary vote in the European Parliament in June — one of the final steps before a law can take effect. “I guess there will be a conclusion at the next meeting,” Lange said. While parliamentary groups were still discussing when to hold a third and possibly final round of talks, …

Poland could host US troops Trump pulled from Germany, Nawrocki says

Poland could host US troops Trump pulled from Germany, Nawrocki says

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Wednesday that Poland is ready to host American troops withdrawn from Germany and that he would personally lobby Donald Trump to send them east. The offer comes as the Pentagon prepares to pull around 5,000 troops from Germany over the next year, with Trump suggesting the cuts could go even further. “If President Donald Trump decides to reduce the American military presence in Germany, then we in Poland are ready to receive American soldiers,” Nawrocki said during NATO exercises in Lithuania. He added that Poland already has “the infrastructure ready” for such a move. Nawrocki’s remarks come days after Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Monday that Poland should not “poach” troops from allies. Tusk also said Poland would take “any opportunity” to increase the U.S. presence on its territory, but that he would not allow the country to be used to break European unity. Tusk’s “poach” comment drew sharp criticism from the opposition Law and Justice party, Nawrocki’s political camp, which accused him of prioritizing Berlin over Polish security. Tusk …

Managing an ally, appealing to a pope – POLITICO

And Crosetto said at an event during Italy’s Armed Forces Day that “in a world that has gone crazy … it is our duty to ensure that Italy can defend itself,” validating Trump’s longstanding demand that NATO allies should do — and spend — more to defend themselves. Meloni will try to convey alignment when she sits down with Rubio, including through increased defense spending, according to analyst Filippo Simonelli of the Rome-based Istituto Affari Internazionali think tank. And longer-term commitments offer a potential path to ease tensions without requiring immediate public concessions: Crosetto’s meeting is a sign that something could move in that direction, Simonelli argued. “Italy is not strictly necessary, but the U.S. is losing ground with allies, so reinforcing ties with a middle power may in the end be worth the effort,” continued Simonelli. “They will likely try to find some meeting point and a path forward for cooperation.” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is navigating a more complicated domestic landscape. | Simona Granati – Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images On Wednesday, the …
