Rolex watch theft victim so traumatised he is leaving Britain

A pensioner who was robbed of his £30,000 watch by an asylum seeker was left so traumatised by the theft he plans to move abroad. Sunil Chopra, 73, had his Patek Philippe wristwatch stolen from him by Zakaria Senouci, 27, in central London in April last year. The Algerian thief could now face deportation after being sentenced to three years and nine months in prison on Thursday. Southwark Crown Court heard Mr Chopra was walking on a street near Hyde Park when Senouci took hold of his left arm and ripped the time piece from his wrist. Senouci, a mechanic, fled down the street and later handed the watch, which has not been recovered, to another criminal for £606 (€700). Trauma leading to long term mental health problems (Image: Getty) One in eight mothers experienced trauma during childbirth; a shock new poll shows – with many later suffering mental health problems linked to maternity care failures. The survey found that 12 per cent of women were traumatised while giving birth, with the distress often followed by lasting psychological harm, anxiety, and fear about having more children. Researchers say the findings highlight how the impact of poor maternity care goes far beyond physical injury, with almost one in three mothers reporting mental health struggles after their childbirth experience. The figures come in the wake of major maternity safety investigations including the Nottingham hospitals inquiry – the largest in NHS history – as well as reviews into Shrewsbury and Telford, East Kent, and other trusts where serious failings, missed warnings and women not being listened to were repeatedly identified. The new polling, commissioned by Lime Solicitors, found that nearly a third (30%) of women said their childbirth experience left them with mental health issues, while 13% reported …

Michael Rosen: “I’m not traumatised by the death of my son”

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. “This may sound extraordinary,” says Michael Rosen, “but I’m not traumatised by the death of my son.” While I try to take that in, the broadcaster and writer continues. “And I’m not traumatised by having been in a coma for 40 days. I’m concerned, I’m worried, I’m saddened, I’m all those things. But that word ‘trauma’ means something else: it comes from German, the idea of a dream you can’t get out of – you’re stuck in it, and at a loss. And I can genuinely say: I think about it, but I’m not stuck. I can love my son who died, and live with it, and not feel traumatised by it.” It’s perhaps the ultimate affidavit for Rosen’s new book, Good Days. There are plenty of self-appointed gurus out there telling us how to live our “best lives”, but Rosen is a man who’s faced some truly dark times – and if he can come out the other side untraumatised, his advice is probably worth listening …
