Magistrates courts are already under huge amounts of pressure – cutting jury trials will make things worse

Proposals to cut the use of jury trials for most offences would be one of the most significant legal reforms in UK history. The government’s plans have prompted much debate in legal circles and beyond – mainly around whether they go against the UK’s democratic principles. The government’s hope is that reducing jury trials will address the growing backlog of cases in the Crown Court. But the proposals included in the courts and tribunals bill suggest that many more cases would be dealt with in magistrates courts instead of Crown Courts. The bill proposes removing people’s ability to choose a jury trial in certain types of cases. It also introduces a new tier of Crown Court, in which cases will be tried by one judge alone. To further restrict the number of cases reaching Crown Courts, the bill proposes significantly increasing magistrates’ sentencing powers, and restricting the ability to appeal magistrates court decisions. Why magistrates courts are under pressure Magistrates courts are already the workhorses of the English and Welsh criminal justice system. Cases are …

You be the judge: should my flatmate stop using my details to sign up for free trials? | Life and style

The prosecution: Billy double quotation markUnlike the kettle or the wifi, my contact details aren’t for communal use. Plus it’s annoying My housemate, Ronnie, is a cheapskate. In this economy, I get it, but sometimes he takes it too far. He always uses my phone number to get a second free trial with gyms or streaming services, and I can’t stand it. He’ll just shout from the other room, “Hey, what’s that login code?” Unlike the kettle or the wifi, my contact details aren’t for communal use. I want to protect my good name, but he thinks it’s funny. It got particularly annoying recently when he started using my email to get discounts aimed at new customers. My inbox is flooded with welcome emails, and reminders that “my” trial is about to expire. double quotation mark I find myself wondering if companies flag this kind of thing and if my number is now associated with dodgy behaviour I get texts at odd hours confirming sign-ups to services I never joined. It’s as if my identity has …

Are adult ADHD clinical trials testing the right patients? A new study raises doubts

Are adult ADHD clinical trials testing the right patients? A new study raises doubts

More than half of major clinical trials testing treatments for adult ADHD did not adequately verify that participants actually had the condition, raising serious concerns about the reliability of the evidence underpinning current care. This new study was published in European Psychiatry. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was originally described as a childhood condition, defined by observable behaviors that parents and teachers could report, such as excessive running, an inability to sit still, or constant interruption. However, in recent decades, ADHD diagnoses in adults have risen sharply. This surge has prompted growing concern among researchers and clinicians about whether the diagnostic criteria—originally tailored for children—are fit for purpose when applied to adults. The challenge is significant. To be diagnosed, adults must reflect on and self-report their own internal experiences (such as feeling distracted or restless) and recall childhood behaviors that occurred decades earlier. Many symptoms of adult ADHD can also be caused by depression, trauma, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Without carefully ruling out these alternatives through a thorough, differential psychiatric assessment, misdiagnosis can easily occur. …

A brain implant to treat depression gets FDA greenlight to start trials

Earlier this week, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a human trial for a blueberry-sized brain implant intended to target treatment-resistant depression. The brain-computer interface (BCI) developed by Houston-based startup Motif Neurotech aims to deliver electrical stimulation to activate parts of the brain’s central executive network that are inactive in people with major depressive disorder. If successful, it would make this the first example of a BCI used to treat clinical depression. “The goal for this technology is that it would be the mental health equivalent of a continuous glucose monitor for diabetes,” Motif CEO and co-founder Jacob Robinson, said in an e-mailed statement. The Motif implant, known as DOT, sits in the bone over the brain region well-established as a target for depression treatment. The DOT, approximately the size of a blueberry, is wirelessly powered and designed to be implanted in a 20-minute outpatient procedure. Image: Motif Neurotech via Businesswire. AI-Designed Drugs by a DeepMind Spinoff Are Headed to Human Trials

AI-Designed Drugs by a DeepMind Spinoff Are Headed to Human Trials

Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold has already revolutionized scientists’ understanding of proteins. Now, the ability of the platform to design safe and effective drugs is about to be put to the test. Isomorphic Labs, the UK-based biotech spinoff of Google DeepMind, will soon begin human trials of drugs designed by its Nobel Prize–winning AI technology. “We’re gearing up to go into the clinic,” Isomorphic Labs president Max Jaderberg said on April 16 at WIRED Health in London. “It’s going to be a very exciting moment as we go into clinical trials and start seeing the efficacy of these molecules.” Jaderberg did not elaborate on the timeline, but it’s later than the company had planned to initiate human studies. Last year, CEO Demis Hassabis said it would have AI-designed drugs in clinical trials by the end of 2025. Isomorphic Labs was founded in 2021 as a spinoff from Alphabet’s AI research subsidiary, Google DeepMind. The company uses DeepMind’s AlphaFold, a groundbreaking AI platform that predicts protein structures, for drug discovery. Built from 20 different amino acids, proteins are …

Why Europe should strive to increase its clinical trials – POLITICO

Why Europe should strive to increase its clinical trials – POLITICO

The pharmaceutical sector is the engine room that drives clinical trial activity and the benefits that go way beyond patient care. Clinical research delivers significant economic growth, and the European Union has the potential to deliver so much more. That’s why it’s good news that the European Medicines Agency (EMA), alongside the European Commission and Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA), have set a new target for increasing clinical trials in the EU. The 11.1 percent target should bring an additional 500 multinational trials over five years. A new report by Frontier Economics, published in February by EFPIA, analyzed this target. It will produce an extra 35,000 clinical trial places for people in Europe, who will be able to access treatments that may otherwise have been unavailable. The economic impact is estimated to be around €4 billion. It’s certainly a good first step toward turning around a decade of decline. Patients in the United Statesand China, for example, now see the benefit of significantly increased trial places, whereas Europe has lost 60,000 trial places in the …

Luigi Mangione’s State, Federal Trials Pushed Back Until Fall

Luigi Mangione’s State, Federal Trials Pushed Back Until Fall

Authored by Chris Summers via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had both his state and federal trials postponed on April 1 until the fall. Luigi Mangione is escorted into Manhattan state court in New York City on Sept. 16, 2025. Seth Wenig/AP Photo Mangione allegedly shot Thompson, 50, on Dec. 4, 2024, as he walked toward a hotel in Manhattan where UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual investor conference. Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty, but faces life in prison if he is convicted in either trial. Judge Gregory Carro on Wednesday rescheduled the state trial from June 8 to Sept. 8, acting hours after the judge in the federal case, Margaret Garnett, moved jury selection in that matter from Sept. 8 to Oct. 5. Garnett said her decision was based on Mangione’s state murder trial taking place in June. Mangione’s attorneys asked to postpone the federal case until January or February 2027. Garnett declined, but accepted there may be a further delay. “Whether …

Researchers find major flaws in the historical clinical trials used to justify spanking

Researchers find major flaws in the historical clinical trials used to justify spanking

A recent study suggests that there is no experimental evidence proving physical punishment is an effective way to discipline children. The findings indicate that alternative, non-physical strategies are just as effective at encouraging child cooperation, without the potential risks associated with spanking. The research was published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect. Spanking remains a widely practiced form of discipline, considered normative and socially acceptable in many cultures. Despite disapproval from some health organizations, it is estimated that globally, two out of every three children aged two to four years have been spanked. Scientists conducted the new study in response to ongoing debates about the merits of physical punishment. Recently, some academics published a commentary arguing that strict experimental trials provide evidence that spanking is an effective way to enforce child compliance. These proponents claimed that laws banning physical discipline are misguided and that spanking should remain an available option for parents. “We explored this topic because a recent invited commentary in a psychiatry journal advocated use of spanking as a means of enforcing …
