U.S. Wheat Futs Hit Two-Year High As Wall Street Sounds Alarm Over Drought Shock

Hard red winter wheat climbed to a two-year high by the end of the week, as our coverage of the drought shock now hitting America’s Breadbasket raises serious alarm bells on commodity desks. The concern is not just reduced crop yields and quality. It is colliding with fertilizer shortages and elevated diesel prices, creating a broader inflationary transmission channel that could work its way through the food supply and translate into higher supermarket prices down the road. Hard red winter wheat rose another 1% on Friday, with gains for the week approaching 6%. Active futures contracts in Chicago are now at their highest level since June 2024. Contracts are up 28% on the year. On Thursday, UBS analysts, led by Jonathan Pingle, told clients that the drought conditions impacting the U.S. agricultural belt rank among the worst in more than 130 years: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Palmer Drought Severity Index hit its highest level for March since records started in 1895, and March was the third-driest month recorded, regardless of time of year, …

Olympic medallist Kerley handed two-year ban following missed tests

Olympic medallist Kerley handed two-year ban following missed tests

March 6 : American sprinter Fred Kerley has been suspended for missing three out-of-competition drug tests within a 12-month period, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday. The AIU said Kerley’s missed tests qualify as whereabouts failures under the World Anti-Doping Code, which requires athletes in a registered testing pool to provide daily location details so they can be tested without notice. Three missed tests or filing failures in a year can trigger a sanction of up to two years. “How does someone come forward and say they were given drugs, the athlete gets banned but the whole camp isn’t investigated? Clean sport means accountability for everyone, not just the athlete,” the sprinter wrote on X in response to the AIU statement. Kerley, 30, won silver in the 100 metres at the Tokyo Olympics and bronze in Paris last summer. He also captured the 100-metre world title in 2022. Kerley joined the Enhanced Games in September, a decision that came while he was facing a provisional suspension by the AIU for multiple whereabouts failures. …

Nine charged after two-year York police probe targets illegal gambling networks

York Regional Police say they’ve charged nine people after wrapping up a two-year investigation into illegal gambling operations in Vaughan and Toronto. As part of the probe, officers seized gaming machines, large amounts of cash, and other assets they believe were tied to criminal activity. The investigation, dubbed Project Scala, was led by York Regional Police’s Traditional Organized Crime Task Force. Police say it began in 2024 and focused on illegal gaming houses in both cities, as well as the people allegedly collecting money from them. MSCHF’s Latest Project Could See a Two-Year Cow Slaughtered

MSCHF’s Latest Project Could See a Two-Year Cow Slaughtered

In about two months, the fate of a cow named Angus will be decided. At present, the outlook is grim: Angus is slated to be turned into roughly 1,200 hamburger patties and four leather handbags. But MSCHF—the art collective behind viral artworks ranging from Big Red Boots to a branded ATM publicly displaying users’ account balances—appears to be hoping that might still change in the next 64 days. Angus, who lives on a farm in upstate New York, is the subject of MSCHF’s ongoing project Our Cow Angus, which began in August 2024 when the group purchased the animal. To fund the project, MSCHF presold “Angus Tokens”—priced at $35 for a three-pack of five-ounce patties and $1,200 for a crossbody bag—tied to the cow’s eventual slaughter. The plan is set to be carried out when Angus turns two, the typical age for cattle slaughter in the United States. (The project’s website also features a diary documenting Angus’s life on the farm, though it has not been updated since July 24.) Related Articles There is, however, …
