Rembrandt Painting Emerges After Going Unseen for Years: Rijksmuseum

Rembrandt Painting Emerges After Going Unseen for Years: Rijksmuseum

A painting that disappeared from view during the 1960s and hasn’t been seen by the public since then is a bona fide Rembrandt, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum said on Monday. Titled Vision of Zacharias in the Temple, the painting was produced in 1633 and was initially discredited by scholars well-versed in Rembrandt’s oeuvre. But following a two-year study of the paint used to make the work, experts with the Rijksmuseum found that it was, in fact, by the Dutch Old Master. It is a surprising revelation, and one that is significant, given that news of the attribution was announced by the museum that holds The Night Watch (1642), one of Rembrandt’s masterpieces. Related Articles Vision of Zacharias in the Temple predates The Night Watch by about nine years, placing the former work in the early stages of Rembrandt’s career. It depicts Zacharias, a Jewish priest who, in the New Testament, is visited by the Archangel Gabriel and told that he will bear a son. In typical fashion for Rembrandt, Vision of Zacharias in the Temple is dominated …

Iranian photojournalist shares unseen images of Tehran protests

Iranian photojournalist shares unseen images of Tehran protests

For days, Iranian photographer Yalda Moaiery tried in vain to reconnect to the internet. It was only on January 23 that she succeeded, thanks to a VPN. She was then able to send around 40 photographs taken during the major demonstration on January 8 in Tehran, as well as the funeral of a 39-year-old man killed by regime forces in the city of Karaj on January 9. These images are among the very few visual accounts, provided by a professional, of this crackdown carried out behind closed doors. Moaiery initially chose to remain anonymous when Le Monde published, on January 26, her photos of the burial, to avoid being identified and to continue documenting the repression. Early on the morning of Tuesday, February 3, about 10 agents serving the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps raided her home in central Tehran, confiscating her photographic equipment, computer and cell phone. For the print edition, which was published a few days later, M Le Magazine du Monde decided to remove from its Iran portfolio any information that could identify …

The pieces, created by one of the band’s founding members, will be unveiled at the Liverpool Beatles Museum on Thursday. Sutcliffe joined the iconic group after meeting John Lennon at art school in Liverpool, later travelling to Hamburg, Germany, to perform with them. He ultimately departed the band in 1961 to dedicate himself to his art career, but tragically died the following year at the age of 21. The four works have been loaned to the museum by Hereward Harrison, a close friend of Sutcliffe’s late sister, Pauline. Mr Harrison, 82, explained that Ms Sutcliffe, who passed away in 2019, had given him the pieces as gifts over their 50-year friendship, and he had kept them framed …

Astronomers discover previously unseen kernel structure inside the Kuiper Belt

Astronomers at Princeton University have uncovered evidence that the outer solar system is more structured than long believed. Led by astrophysics doctoral student Amir Siraj, the research points to a compact, previously unseen cluster of icy bodies inside the Kuiper Belt. The finding suggests that distant solar system orbits still hold clues about how the planets moved billions of years ago. The Kuiper Belt lies beyond Neptune and contains countless frozen remnants left over from planet formation. For years, astronomers thought they had identified its main features. One of the most prominent is the “kernel,” a tight grouping of objects on calm, low-tilt orbits about 44 astronomical units from the Sun. An astronomical unit, or AU, is the average distance between Earth and the Sun. The new study shows that this familiar picture may be incomplete. Using a data-mining technique borrowed from stellar astronomy, Siraj and his colleagues found signs of a second compact structure just inside the known kernel. They call it the “inner kernel,” a group of Kuiper Belt objects clustered around 43 …

Stranger Things Star Addresses ‘Unseen Footage’ Petition

Stranger Things actor Randy Havens is setting the record straight amid claims that fans of the hit show are being deprived of more episodes of the hit series. After the latest episodes of Stranger Things’ fifth and final season began streaming on Netflix last week, more than 250,000 fans have co-signed a petition calling for “unseen footage” from the show to be released. The Change.org petition was inspired by a fan theory claiming that there was originally “more to the episodes” that viewers didn’t get to see “either due to Netflix or the team of Stranger Things cutting them”. In their post, the petition’s creator lamented: “This has been a long 10-years process and this is what we get. “They must have cut out a lot of scenes from volume 2 and from our loved characters. I believe we as fans should stand up and take the initiative to get the footage and make the decision.” However, cast member Randy – who has played science teacher and mentor to the central gang Scott Clarke since …
