Vance opens up about his faith journey — and Usha’s central role

Vice President JD Vance had, in his words, a “vicious editor” for his new book: second lady Usha Vance. She helped “harmonize different chapters” and excise parts that “didn’t add anything of value.” She also played a meaningful role in the memoir’s narrative — a Hindu wife who encouraged her searching husband throughout his faith journey from Protestant to atheist to Catholic convert. “Fundamentally, the book wouldn’t exist without her,” said Vance, speaking by telephone in his first interview to preview the book. “I talk about this in the book. There is a certain irony to it, because she is not herself a Christian. But I certainly, I don’t think, would be a Christian today were it not for …

Vance calls Pope Leo’s AI warnings ‘profound’

Vice President JD Vance praised Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday for issuing a new theological document rife with warnings about unbridled advancements in AI. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The text, Leo’s first encyclical since his installation as pope last year, urged a restraint that doesn’t stop progress but, rather, functions as the “exercise of responsible care for the human family.” Vance, a Catholic and a proponent of AI technology, said in a telephone interview with NBC News that he had yet to read the entire encyclical but had scanned “bits and pieces” and summaries of it. “What I read of it sounds very profound, and the sort of thing that you would expect and hope from a leader of the church,” he said. “The thing about morality is that the principles never change, but the way you apply those principles does, because the world changes, right?” “You have new technologies and warfare, so you have to update ‘Just War’ doctrine,” Vance added. “New ways …

Vance urges immigration critics in UK to ‘keep on going’ after London protest

“A lot of people, frankly, a lot of people in the media, have tried to persuade all of those people that it’s somehow racist to want to protect your borders, even though very often the very people who are most affected by low-wage immigration are lower-income black and Hispanic Americans right here in the United States of America, and I guarantee that’s true in the UK. Vance defends Trump stock-trading spree: ‘Come on, man’

U.S. Vice President JD Vance speaks during a press conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on May 19, 2026 in Washington, DC. Heather Diehl | Getty Images Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump against a question about the heavy stock trading on display in the president’s latest financial disclosures, which revealed transactions totaling hundreds of millions of dollars over just three months. “The president doesn’t sit at the Oval Office on his computer on his, like, Robinhood account, buying and selling stocks,” Vance said in response to a reporter at a White House press briefing. “That’s absurd. He has independent wealth advisors who manage his money. He is a wealthy person. He has had success in business,” Vance said. “He’s not making these stock trades himself,” the vice president said, while accusing the reporter of suggesting otherwise. The filings, made public Thursday, showed more than 3,700 transactions in the first three months of 2026 alone. They include securities of companies Trump “has talked up at events” …

What JD Vance and the New Intellectual Right Want

What JD Vance and the New Intellectual Right Want

The Brains Behind the Trump Era Vice President JD Vance recently criticized Pope Leo XIV online over his criticism of the war in Iran. It was a bold move for a Catholic convert, but perhaps not surprising, given the larger ideological commitments that have shaped Vance and his milieu. In a new book, Furious Minds: The Making of the MAGA New Right, scholar Laura K. Field tracks the intellectual leaders — scholars, policy wonks, think tankers — who have fueled Trump’s political ascendancy. Ranging from Catholic commentator Sohrab Ahmari to former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to internet personality Bronze Age Pervert, Field says they don’t care so much about President Donald Trump as they do about fighting liberal democracy and replacing it with economic nationalism, anti-immigration policies and America First foreign policy. Field joined Katelyn and Roxy for a fascinating conversation about who these men are, what they want, and how they could shape American democracy far beyond the Trump era. GUEST: Laura K. Field is a political theorist as well as a scholar …

Vance Denies and Confirms Atlantic Reporting in One Breath

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. Staying in Donald Trump’s good graces while also protecting your own political future requires supreme political agility, and most people who try end up failing at both. Just ask Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, Paul Ryan, and any number of other faded GOP stars—if you can find them. Vice President Vance hasn’t mastered this balance either. Earlier this week, The Atlantic reported that during private meetings, Vance “has repeatedly questioned the Defense Department’s depiction of the war in Iran and whether the Pentagon has understated what appears to be the drastic depletion of U.S. missile stockpiles.” Vance’s inquiries echo concerns from some others inside the administration, as well as voices in Congress and elsewhere, who warn about American military readiness. Public figures occasionally deliver what’s known as a “non-denial denial,” in which they try to throw cold water on a …

WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 28: King Charles III addresses a joint meeting of Congress as U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) look on at the U.S. Capitol on April 28, 2026 in Washington, DC. In his first visit to the U.S. as the British monarch, King Charles III addressed Congress as part of a multi-day trip to the nation’s capital, New York City, and Virginia celebrating the United States of America’s 250th anniversary of its independence. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) (Image: Getty Images) King Charles addressed members of the US Congress on Tuesday, celebrating the bond between the US and UK in a message of unity amid escalating global tensions, receiving a resounding standing ovation. However, not all leaders responded favourably to His Majesty’s address. King Charles became only the second reigning monarch to speak before the American legislative body, following in the footsteps of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The King took to the podium before Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson. …

Vance Doubts the Pentagon’s Depiction of the Iran War

In closed-door meetings, J. D. Vance has repeatedly questioned the Defense Department’s depiction of the war in Iran and whether the Pentagon has understated what appears to be the drastic depletion of U.S. missile stockpiles. Two senior administration officials told us that the vice president has queried the accuracy of the information the Pentagon has provided about the war. He has also expressed his concerns about the availability of certain missile systems in discussions with President Trump, several people familiar with the situation told us. The consequences of a dramatic drawdown in munitions reserves are potentially dire: U.S. forces would need to draw from these same stockpiles to defend Taiwan against China, South Korea against North Korea, and Europe against Russia. Both Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, and General Dan Caine, who chairs the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have publicly said that U.S. weapons stockpiles are robust, and portrayed the damage to Iranian forces after eight weeks of fighting as drastic. Vance’s advisers, who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity, told us …
