California Democrats’ Pyrrhic Victory – The Atlantic

California Democrats’ Pyrrhic Victory – The Atlantic

As with pretty much everything involving California governance, discerning the state’s election results can devolve into a big, unruly mess. To wit, Tuesday’s primary—particularly the free-for-all campaign for governor to succeed Gavin Newsom—remains too muddled to call, with millions of outstanding ballots likely yet to be counted. At minimum, though, we can speak with some preliminary clarity, let’s call it, on the contest. California elections are consolidated via a “jungle primary” system, in which the top-two finishers, regardless of party, advance to November. As of today, the Trump-endorsed Republican Steve Hilton, a British transplant and former Fox News host, is the leading vote-getter. Two Democrats—the former California attorney general and Joe Biden Cabinet secretary Xavier Becerra and the billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer—are currently sitting in second and third place, respectively. And there’s still a chance both could come from behind to squeeze out Hilton. Democrats appear to have skirted a dreaded “Blue Armageddon” scenario in which their crowded field of middling-or-worse candidates cancel one another out, while the two middling-or-worse Republicans (Hilton and Riverside …

The Arsenal fans who brought style and swagger to the team’s victory parade: ‘Everyone supports the same thing but expresses it in their own way’ | Fashion

‘The only thing I haven’t got are the underpants. Everything else is Arsenal,” says Shane, a memorabilia and kit collector perched outside north London’s Clissold park with his daughter, Erin. Known online as Highbury Gunner JVC, the 47-year-old wore an Arsenal-buckled belt, a club tie in a player pattern and a club shirt with a red and white vintage-style duffel bag. The showstopper, though, was his bespoke jacket made from curtains by the designer Joe Brim, finished with an Arsenal medallion and watch, and yellow customised Dr Martens. A collector since the 1970s, he says: “I could complete a catalogue from the 90s; my house is like a museum.” Hundreds of thousands of fans turned up for one of the biggest parades in English sporting history. Along a five-mile route stretching from the top of Seven Sisters road, along the Petherton and Holloway roads cutting to the centre of Upper Street, metal barriers spanned as far as the eye could see. The sound of hundreds of party horns filled the air along with beeping cars …

Vingegaard completes Grand Tour set with victory at the Giro d’Italia

Jonas Vingegaard sealed his Giro d’Italia triumph on Sunday, riding into Rome in pink on the final stage won by home hero Jonathan Milan, and becoming the only active rider to have claimed all three Grand Tours. Dane Vingegaard rolled into the Italian capital to add the Giro to a pair of Tour de France titles in 2022 and 2023 and the Vuelta a Espana from 2025, the triple crown of road cycling’s three-week showpieces. Tadej Pogacar has won the Tour de France four times as well as the Giro, but he has yet to win the Vuelta. The Visma–Lease a Bike rider Vingegaard is just the eighth man to win all three, joining Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Vincenzo Nibali in reaching one of road cycling’s hardest goals. “Winning all three is very special for me, it’s difficult to find the words to describe it,” Vingegaard told Italian broadcaster RAI. Vingegaard added that he would stay in Rome for a few days with his family before returning to Denmark to begin preparations for the …

Malta’s prime minister declares historic victory in snap election – POLITICO

Abela called a snap election in April, four years into his five-year term, amid fears the war in Iran and the ensuing economic shock could erode support for his government. Alex Borg, leader of the opposition Nationalists Party, appeared to concede defeat on Sunday, saying the outcome was “not the result we wanted, but it’s a very clear message.” Abela’s victory was widely expected, with polling ahead of Saturday’s vote showing his Labour Party on top. Still, the Labour Party’s majority appeared to be considerably smaller than its last victory in 2022, with around 18,000 votes separating the government from the opposition. The election was fiercely fought and drew some surprise interventions from Brussels, with Malta’s EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef, who was Abela’s chief of staff, controversially endorsing the prime minister in a campaign speech, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola appearing at campaign stops alongside Borg. French authorities announced Sunday that 780 people were arrested across the country when overnight celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal were marred by violent clashes, and a road accident that killed a young man. Denes Erdos/AP hide caption toggle caption Denes Erdos/AP BUDAPEST, Hungary — Winning the Champions League was so nice, Paris Saint-Germain had to do it twice. PSG became back-to-back European champion by beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic final in Budapest that ended 1-1 after extra time on Saturday. “It’s incredible,” captain Marquinhos said. “From the very first day of this season, the coach said it’s hard to win, and winning twice is even more difficult. So we all had to get back to work. That was the mentality.” Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes fired the last of his team’s penalties over the bar to hand PSG the shootout win. The French giant is only the second team to retain the trophy in the modern era after all-time king of Europe Real Madrid. Luis Enrique became a three-time winner as a coach and has moulded a team that is …

Tiafoe makes online plea after losing racket in crowd during victory celebrations

PARIS, May 28 : Frances Tiafoe won a French Open marathon against Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday but lost his racket in the ensuing celebrations with fans, later making a plea on social media for its safe return and offering two tickets to his next match. American 19th seed Tiafoe came through a gruelling contest on Court 14 with a 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-4 6-7(1) 6-4 victory before running to the boisterous crowd to rejoice, only for a fan to cheekily snatch his racket. Tiafoe did not immediately realise that the racket had been taken, as he stepped away from the crowd and continued his celebrations by taking off his shirt and pointing to his head before flexing his muscles on the court. But reality dawned and he took to social media a little while later to request that the racket be returned to him before he takes on Portugal’s Jaime Faria in the third round. “Unreal atmosphere on Court 14 today,” Tiafoe posted in an Instagram story. “But I must say to the fan who took …

Iran Projects Victory in Potential Deal With Washington

Iran Projects Victory in Potential Deal With Washington

As President Trump and regional diplomats began to herald the possibility of a deal with Iran that could end the war, the spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry responded with his version of a history lesson. Esmail Baghaei, the spokesman, posted an image on social media of a famous relief carved into an archaeological site in Iran that portrays a Roman emperor bowing in submission to a king of the Sassanians, an ancient Iranian empire. “In the Roman mind, Rome was the undisputed center of the world,” Mr. Baghaei wrote, in an apparent reference to the political and military might of Washington today. “The Iranians shattered that illusion.” Despite the military and economic battering Iran has endured during its war with the United States and Israel, its leaders are casting the reported terms of a possible preliminary agreement with Washington as a victory. On Sunday, a senior U.S. official said that the United States and Iran had agreed to a preliminary deal that would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and see Iran dispose of …
