Returning to the fold? Some young Spaniards embrace Catholicism and can’t wait for Pope Leo’s visit

Until three years ago, Sara Cabral’s faith experience was on trend with other Southern European youth — a “Catholic but never practicing” upbringing with little relevance to her life on Spain’s Canary Islands. Then she listened to a song from a faith youth group that felt as if God were speaking to her. She joined the group, and now in addition to its weekly adoration with music sessions, Cabral is excitedly preparing to attend Pope Leo XIV ’s Mass in Gran Canaria with her friends. “You get a restlessness about an emptiness that you don’t know how to fill,” Cabral, 26, says of her embrace of Catholicism. “God is the one looking for you first, but you need to go meet him.” On trips to Spain this month and France in September, Leo will find thousands of young people like her in these traditionally Catholic but now staunchly secular countries, where historic churches are abundant and Mass attendance is sparse. Church leaders and some experts see the success of youth movements and the surge in …

RAF may have to wait until 2040s for £12bn Typhoon replacement fleet | Politics | News

The RAF may have to wait until the 2040s for delivery of fighter jets to replace the Typhoon (Image: Getty) The Royal Air Force may have to wait until the 2040s for delivery of fighter jets to replace its Typhoons, a report suggests. Tempest aircraft entering service will reportedly be delayed until the late 2030s or even the 2040s as funding for the project is pushed back until the middle of the next decade. The Tempest has been hailed by the RAF as promising the deployment of “game-changing” tech. It was due to replace the Typhoon as the RAF’s main fighter from 2035. Its development is part of a joint project with Italy and Japan set to cost £12billion. Britain’s overdue Defence Investment Plan (DIP) will reportedly confirm that funding for the scheme won’t be released until the mid-2030s, the Telegraph reports. Iran official says Trump is stalling talks with ‘excessive demands’ as wait for breakthrough continues

President Donald Trump has yet to make a decision on a deal that could extend the current ceasefire with Iran, with no announcement on Friday following a Situation Room meeting where he said he would make a “final determination.” Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. Oil prices have dipped this week amid persistent reports that Trump and Iran could be close to sealing an agreement that has eluded the two sides for over a month. While U.S. and Arab officials have been indicating for days that the deal is close to being finalized, it still has yet to be approved by either side. Nearly a week ago, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had predicted there could be “good news” within hours, only for Trump to say he wouldn’t “rush into” an agreement. Trump said Friday that Iran must agree to never have a nuclear weapon, that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened for “unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions,” and that any mines in the waterway …

HMRC made us wait a year for £150,000 tax rebate | Money

HMRC made us wait a year for £150,000 tax rebate | Money

When my mother died, there was a four-year delay in achieving probate owing to financial complexities. During this time my father paid inheritance tax (IHT) on the advice of his solicitor, to prevent interest accruing. It turned out that the solicitor’s estimate of the amount was wildly out. My father applied for a rebate a year ago and, eight months later, HMRC confirmed that he was owed £153,500. Two more months have passed without a word. My father is 86 and I do wonder if HMRC is hoping he will die before it has to pay. He used all his savings, and had to sell a field to pay the tax he thought he owed, and it’s left him very short of money. CJ, Bristol If we are 30 days late paying our tax dues, HMRC levies a 5% fine plus interest on the sum owed. When it owes us, however, it allows itself as long as it chooses, and that can be up to a year. Here’s the wonder – three days after I raised …

Valve Steam Controller Review (2026): Wait for the Steam Machine

Valve Steam Controller Review (2026): Wait for the Steam Machine

In terms of inputs, it takes almost every control method from the Steam Deck, short of the touchscreen, and crams it into an 11 x 16 x 6 cm design. Valve tries to have it both ways when it comes to the more familiar controls, using Xbox’s ABXY face buttons and broad design aesthetic but PlayStation’s symmetrical thumbstick layout, plus the twin shoulder buttons and pair of analog triggers. Players accustomed to either will soon adapt to this hybrid approach. The Steam Controller goes beyond either of its console cousins, though, with a whole fleet of inputs that neither Sony nor Microsoft has on their default pads. A quadrant of extra buttons sits on the underside of the grip, and the thumbsticks are clickable, feature capacitive touch sensors, and are built on tunnel magnetoresistance sensors (TMR), which offer even greater precision and durability than Hall effect systems. Don’t Want to Wait for iOS 27? Shortcuts Playground From MacStories Generates Shortcuts Using AI

Apple is rumored to be adding an AI feature for creating shortcuts with natural language to the Shortcuts app in iOS 27, but MacStories‘ Federico Viticci has a clever AI tool for making shortcuts that you can use today. Shortcuts Playground is a plugin for Claude Code and OpenAI Codex that can create shortcuts for the Apple Shortcuts app using natural language input. It’s set up to let users type in a short sentence requesting a shortcut, with the final version output to Finder and ready to upload to Apple’s Shortcuts app in a few minutes. Viticci made Shortcuts Playground free and open source, and the plugin is available from GitHub. Viticci provided detailed documentation on how it works, plus anyone can inspect the code. While Claude Code or Codex can correct errors during the shortcut creation process, Viticci warns that shortcuts generated are not guaranteed to be 100 percent accurate, and users should always check the AI’s work. To get Shortcuts Playground, give Claude Code or OpenAI Codex a link to the GitHub repo, …

Iran reviewing U.S. position on ending war; Trump willing to wait

Iran Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the Islamic Republic had received the views of the American side “and are reviewing them,” according to the state-run agency Nour News. Baghaei said Pakistan, which hosted peace talks between the U.S. and Iran last month, continues to mediate exchanges between Tehran and Washington, adding that several rounds of communication had taken place based on Iran’s original 14-point framework. Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir is expected to travel to Iran’s capital on Thursday as part of ongoing mediation talks between Washington and Tehran, according to Iran’s ISNA news agency.
