Drivers also are now filling up more often, but topping up with fewer gallons at a time. As the U.S. war in Iran continues to drive up gas prices, Costco’s gas stations have been selling record amounts of fuel, executives told investors on a call Thursday. In fact, Costco had never sold as much gas as it did between April and mid-May, CEO Ron Vachris said, with stations having to get multiple daily gas deliveries to keep up. If the toys are damaged or ruptured, the material could be released into the air and potentially inhaled, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday. More than 121,000 units distributed across the U.S. are affected. The recall covers two Orb Funkee squeeze toy models with the date code 3102491A. Both are soft, stretchable “monkee” figures filled with sand. Model 17451 is a large gold monkey, while model 41929 includes smaller multicolored versions in shades such as orange, purple, and green. Kroger Co.’s new chief executive officer is looking at big price cuts in order to win back market share and take on his former employer, Walmart Inc., and other competitors. The largest U.S. grocery company, which owns 21 chains including City Market and Fred Meyer, is laying the groundwork for lower prices across product categories, CEO Greg Foran told Bloomberg News in his first interview since taking the role in February. Management is currently making plans to test price cuts and then phase them in. Kroger is looking to compete more fiercely with Walmart and other companies that have gained ground in recent years at the expense of traditional grocery operators. Across food retail, businesses emphasizing value are outperforming those seen as offering higher prices, Foran said, pointing to Walmart, Costco Wholesale Corp., Trader Joe’s, Aldi and Amazon.com Inc. “I think about our business a bit like a Formula One race. Extending concerns about US consumer weakness – now that the bumper OBBBA tax refund period is over – after yesterday’s earnings by Home Depot and Target, this morning Walmart reported Q1 earnings (the last big company to report, rounding out earnings season) and warned that fuel costs are squeezing the company’s bottom line and could lead to higher prices for shoppers.  In the latest quarter, the world’s largest retailer said comparable sales in US stores rose 4.1%, excluding fuel, in the latest quarter, slightly better than the 4.0% Wall Street analysts were expecting. That was the good news; the bad news is that this was the slowest growth in comp store sales since 2024; Walmart also forecast adjusted profit for the second quarter that missed analysts’ expectations. That, together with several warnings on the state of the low-income consumer and that prices will rise unless input costs drop slammed shares.
