After months of conversations with ChatGPT,  a 53-year-old Silicon Valley entrepreneur became convinced he’d discovered a cure for sleep apnea and that powerful people were coming after him, according to a new lawsuit filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco County. He then allegedly used the tool to stalk and harass his ex-girlfriend. Now the ex-girlfriend is suing OpenAI, alleging the company’s technology enabled the acceleration of her harassment, TechCrunch has exclusively learned. She claims OpenAI ignored three separate warnings that the user posed a threat to others, including an internal flag classifying his account activity as involving mass-casualty weapons.  The plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe to protect her identity, is suing for punitive damages. She also filed a temporary restraining order Friday asking the court to force OpenAI to block the user’s account, prevent him from creating new ones, notify her if he attempts to access ChatGPT, and preserve his complete chat logs for discovery. OpenAI has agreed to suspend the user’s account but has refused the rest, according to Doe’s lawyers. …

New research reveals that ‘foundation models’ trained on vast, general time‑series data may be able to forecast river flows accurately, even in regions with little or no local hydrological records. The approach could improve flood warnings, drought planning, and water resource management in parts of the world where monitoring data is limited. Real-time pollution warnings are needed at Lake Windermere after two people swimming there were taken to hospital last summer, campaigners have said. A seven-year-old boy developed life-threatening kidney failure following an E coli infection allegedly linked to him swimming in the lake. Windermere, in the Lake District in Cumbria, is one of the UK’s most popular open-water swimming destinations and attracts millions of visitors every year. In August last year, Claire and her family were kayaking in the lake when she noticed the water appeared murky, but she said she was reassured by the Environment Agency’s “excellent” bathing water classification. But hours later, her seven-year-old son became violently ill, suffering severe vomiting and rectal bleeding. He was admitted to hospital but his condition rapidly deteriorated, and after three days, he was transferred to a regional children’s hospital. The boy was diagnosed with haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition which is one of the leading causes of sudden kidney failure in children. Weather warnings for strong winds have been issued for parts of the UK. Forecasters have said there could be gusts of 65-70mph, with a small chance of gusts of 75-80mph in a few locations, with rain and blustery showers accompanying the strongest winds. The so-called “Nor’easter” pummeled the region overnight, disrupting flights and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered nonessential drivers off the road until midday Monday and shut down schools. Authorities in neighboring New Jersey and Rhode Island issued similar travel restrictions.
