Urgent warnings to Morrisons, Matalan and TikTok shoppers over ‘health’ concerns

Shoppers should check their purchases to make sure they do not own any recalled items after safety warnings have been issued. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recalls products for a number of reasons, including when products contain allergens that are not disclosed on the packaging or if an issue is detected with the item. When a product is recalled the FSA shares details about what you should do if you have purchased the product, alongside detailed information about why it has been pulled from sale. Every week in the UK several product recalls are published on the Government website. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is responsible for updating the public on products which have been pulled from shelves. Products are recalled regularly from a number of different retailers, for various reasons. Recalls published by the government website are for specific products that have been sold in the UK and may require you to act to receive a free replacement, repair or refund. The OPSS said its primary purpose it to “protect people …

Met Office issues new storm warnings for 7 areas – ‘Danger to life’ | Weather | News

A yellow alert for thunderstorms is now in place between 10pm tonight (May 26) and 2am tomorrow (May 27) for Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Peterborough, and Suffolk. Up to 30mm of rain may fall in just 30 minutes in some areas, accompanied by hail, lightning, and gusty winds. The Met Office said: “An area of thunderstorms is moving eastwards and will clear later this evening or during the early hours of Wednesday. “Where storms occur, heavy rain and frequent lightning is expected and 20 to 30 mm of rain may fall in 30 to 60 minutes in some places. Storms may also be accompanied by hail and gusty winds in a few spots.” It added: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. “Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations …

Vance calls Pope Leo’s AI warnings ‘profound’

Vice President JD Vance praised Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday for issuing a new theological document rife with warnings about unbridled advancements in AI. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The text, Leo’s first encyclical since his installation as pope last year, urged a restraint that doesn’t stop progress but, rather, functions as the “exercise of responsible care for the human family.” Vance, a Catholic and a proponent of AI technology, said in a telephone interview with NBC News that he had yet to read the entire encyclical but had scanned “bits and pieces” and summaries of it. “What I read of it sounds very profound, and the sort of thing that you would expect and hope from a leader of the church,” he said. “The thing about morality is that the principles never change, but the way you apply those principles does, because the world changes, right?” “You have new technologies and warfare, so you have to update ‘Just War’ doctrine,” Vance added. “New ways …

Assemblies of God ignored warnings, freeing a children’s pastor to sexually abuse girls, lawsuit says

Assemblies of God ignored warnings, freeing a children’s pastor to sexually abuse girls, lawsuit says

Survivors described the same devastating cycle: children who tried to warn adults, pastors who minimized or ignored allegations, and church leaders who extended grace and protection to abusers, clearing the way for more children to be harmed. Davis’ account was one of the starkest examples. After NBC News’ investigation was published, more women came forward with stories of abuse by Waller and cover-ups by church officials, joining Davis’ legal effort to hold them accountable. “The Assemblies of God caught this predator red-handed in 2004, holding his camera and his list of nude exercises in their hands,” the women’s lawyer, Joshua D. Gillispie, said in a statement. “Instead of calling the police or protecting vulnerable children, they actively chose to shield the denomination’s reputation and treat a child molester with tenderness and forgiveness at the expense of children’s innocence.” In a statement, the General Council of the Assemblies of God, the denomination’s U.S. governing body, said it didn’t learn of allegations against Waller until 2015. “Mr. Waller was promptly reported to the appropriate legal authorities, investigated, …

UK gambling reforms may hurt economy less than industry warnings suggest, study finds

UK gambling reforms may hurt economy less than industry warnings suggest, study finds

A new economic study says proposed gambling reforms in Britain would likely cause far less damage to the wider economy than industry groups have repeatedly warned. The research was conducted by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and the University of Glasgow. It examined measures included in the government’s 2023 white paper, High Stakes: Gambling Reform for the Digital Age. Those proposals are expected to cut Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) by as much as £812 million annually. GGY measures the money gambling operators keep after paying winnings. Researchers estimated the broader economic hit from that decline would total about £134 million, or roughly 16 percent of the expected reduction in gambling revenue. Our analysis shows that of a projected £812 million reduction in GGY, £134 million—around 16 per cent of the total reduction—is translated into a net negative economic impact on the UK economy,” the report said. How gamblers would redirect their spending The study found that most consumers would not simply stop spending money altogether if gambling activity fell. Instead, many would …

UK spring sunshine prompts warnings over unsafe fake designer sunglasses | Health

UK spring sunshine prompts warnings over unsafe fake designer sunglasses | Health

While many will be enjoying the spring sunshine, experts have cautioned against wearing fake designer sunglasses, warning they could do more harm than good. As the College of Optometrists notes, sunglasses not only protect the eyes against glare on sunny days, but can also shield them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. That’s important because UV rays have been linked to a number of eye conditions. In the short term, for example, they can cause a temporary but painful condition called photokeratitis – essentially a “sunburn” on the cornea, which sits at the front of the eye. In the longer term, UV exposure is associated with the development of early-onset cataracts, non-cancerous growths on the cornea known as pterygia, some types of eyelid cancer, and potentially even age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to sight loss. However, experts have warned wearing fake designer sunglasses could be worse for your eyes than going without as they often lack crucial UV filters. Alex Day, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields eye hospital, said: “When you buy fake sunglasses, you …

The Pope’s Warnings About AI Were AI-Generated, a Detection Tool Claims

The Pope’s Warnings About AI Were AI-Generated, a Detection Tool Claims

On Monday, a brand-new Reddit account popped up on the widely read forum r/AmItheAsshole, where users have their personal disputes arbitrated by strangers. This particular user asked if they had crossed a line by “refusing to babysit my stepmother’s kids because I have my own job and responsibilities.” The post itself was succinct, straightforward, and grammatically clean, explaining a situation in which the person’s stepmother and father often expected them to provide childcare on little notice, eventually leading to an argument. “Now there’s tension at home, and I’m starting to wonder if I handled it the wrong way,” the redditor concluded. “I do understand that raising kids is stressful, but I also feel like I shouldn’t be obligated to take on that responsibility when it’s not my role.” The responses to this individual were largely supportive: The kids were not theirs to look after, many people replied, and moving out of the house would be the best course of action. But according to AI detection software developed by Pangram Labs—which claims an accuracy rate of …

Powerful 7.5-Magnitude Quake Hits Northern Japan, Triggers Tsunami Warnings

Powerful 7.5-Magnitude Quake Hits Northern Japan, Triggers Tsunami Warnings

A powerful and shallow 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s northeast coast, triggering a tsunami at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. Public broadcaster NHK initially warned that a tsunami up to 10 feet high was expected to hit the Iwate area on Honshu’s main island. However, so far, it has been reported to be about 31 inches high. The quake was reported shortly before 17:00 local time, rattled towers as far away as Tokyo, and forced the suspension of Shinkansen high-speed rail services in Iwate, NHK said. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government had mobilized an emergency task force and urged citizens in affected areas to evacuate. “Possible damage and casualties are now being looked into,” Takaichi told reporters in Tokyo. Japan sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where multiple tectonic plates collide and generate earthquakes. Since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, when a 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami sparked triple reactor meltdowns, Japan has overhauled its response and evacuation systems to improve disaster readiness. NHK cited the …

Stalking victim sues OpenAI, claims ChatGPT fueled her abuser’s delusions and ignored her warnings

Stalking victim sues OpenAI, claims ChatGPT fueled her abuser’s delusions and ignored her warnings

After months of conversations with ChatGPT,  a 53-year-old Silicon Valley entrepreneur became convinced he’d discovered a cure for sleep apnea and that powerful people were coming after him, according to a new lawsuit filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco County. He then allegedly used the tool to stalk and harass his ex-girlfriend. Now the ex-girlfriend is suing OpenAI, alleging the company’s technology enabled the acceleration of her harassment, TechCrunch has exclusively learned. She claims OpenAI ignored three separate warnings that the user posed a threat to others, including an internal flag classifying his account activity as involving mass-casualty weapons.  The plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe to protect her identity, is suing for punitive damages. She also filed a temporary restraining order Friday asking the court to force OpenAI to block the user’s account, prevent him from creating new ones, notify her if he attempts to access ChatGPT, and preserve his complete chat logs for discovery. OpenAI has agreed to suspend the user’s account but has refused the rest, according to Doe’s lawyers. …
