A wolf trekked hundreds of miles in California, hoping to find a mate

A wolf known as BEY03F seems intent on making history over and over again. The 3-year-old, black-furred wolf has become the first of her kind known to venture into Sequoia National Park in more than a century — after making similarly momentous visits to Los Angeles and Inyo counties. By 7 a.m. Sunday, BEY03F had passed just south of Mt. Whitney, trekking over mountainous terrain rising at least 13,000 feet, said Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “She did some hiking,” he said. It’s just a day in the life of the peripatetic wolf, who was born in far Northeastern California in 2023. She’s racked up hundreds of miles since leaving home, all of which appear to be in service of one thing: finding a mate to settle down with. Her continued sojourn suggests she’s still looking. “Her travel patterns continue to demonstrate the unpredictable movements of a dispersing wolf seeking a mate and territory of its own,” John Marchwick, of the educational group California Wolf Watch, said …

The Wolf in Grandmother’s Clothing

The Wolf in Grandmother’s Clothing

There is nothing quite like a grandmother. In archetypal terms, a grandparent figure is someone who offers care without control, attention without surveillance, and concern without conditions. In the world of Jungian archetypes, she is a combination of The Sage and The Caregiver. The archetype functions through reassurance rather than discipline: “Are you eating?” “Are you well?” “Let me help.” The archetypal (if a bit transparent) Grandma even makes sure companionship needs are met: “Are you seeing anyone?” That’s why it’s so insidious and so dangerous when predators take on archetypal characteristics to lure their prey, and why the Big Bad Wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale is especially frightening. It does help explain why some individuals with unmet emotional needs (often, but not always, young women) are drawn to men who don’t have their best interests at heart. We are also mystified by how ill-intentioned, transactional predators manage to attract high-functioning people into their circle. These targets may seem successful on the surface, but their emotional vulnerability draws them into the …

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Details ‘Frightening Experience’ After WHCD Shooting

Wolf Blitzer is recounting his “frightening experience” when shots were fired during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday night. The longtime CNN anchor spoke to USA Today after the incident, saying he was near the gunman, who had charged through a security checkpoint and into the Washington Hilton ballroom with multiple weapons. “I feel fine. I’m just scared. It was scary,” he recalled. “I was a few feet away from the gunman as he was firing. It was loud. It was scary. The cops got on top of him and then they got on top of me to protect me. And then they took me away into a secure room, the men’s room. It was just a frightening experience.” Blitzer also went live on CNN after everything went down to detail his experience. He said he was walking back to the ballroom at the time, and then “heard three, maybe six gunshots” and that it was “enormously loud.” The journalist added that “when the cop pushed me down, I said to myself, ‘I wonder …

As it happened: Trump says ‘lone wolf’ shooter at correspondents’ dinner had multiple weapons

As it happened: Trump says ‘lone wolf’ shooter at correspondents’ dinner had multiple weapons

US President Donald Trump was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after shots were fired at the Washington Hilton on Saturday (Apr 25), triggering panic among guests.  A suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, was later apprehended, with Trump describing him as a “lone wolf” armed with multiple weapons.  A Secret Service officer was shot but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover.  Police said the man will be charged with firearms and assault offences, adding that the incident appears to be isolated as investigations continue into his motive and intended target.  The annual dinner has been postponed and will be rescheduled, as Trump called for unity and urged Americans to resolve differences peacefully. Emmerdale airs distressing Bear Wolf scenes as new Ray theory emerges

Emmerdale airs distressing Bear Wolf scenes as new Ray theory emerges

DS Walsh (Amanda Ryan) has a new theory about Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) and Celia Daniels’s (Jaye Griffiths) human trafficking operation in Emmerdale – and it’s bad news for Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards). It’s been a horrendous few months for Bear, who finally found freedom after being held captive on their farm, and subsequently murdering Ray. Living with Stockholm syndrome and unable to accept that what Ray had done to him was wrong, he handed himself into the police. Paddy Dingle (Dominic Brunt) hoped that by proving that his dad wasn’t of sound mind when he committed the crime would allow for a lesser sentence. Walsh agreed that he was struggling, though following a short stint in a mental health institution, Bear discharged himself and was taken back into custody. Earlier this week, the discovery of some new evidence left Paddy hopeful that Bear’s name could finally be cleared. Bear had remembered some distinctive registration plates from a vehicle he was forced to clean blood off. Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) did some digging, and discovered …

L.A.’s history-making wolf lands in Eastern Sierra, seeks forever home

L.A.’s history-making wolf lands in Eastern Sierra, seeks forever home

A wolf that seized national attention when she ventured into Los Angeles County earlier this year continues to make history. The 3-year-old female with black fur entered Inyo County around 7 a.m. Sunday about 20 miles south of Mt. Whitney. She became the first documented wolf to set paws in the Eastern Sierra county in more than a century, according to state wildlife officials. By early Monday afternoon, she had pushed deeper into the county to west of the community of Bartlett, said Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Her movements are tracked with a GPS collar. Share via Close extra sharing options The wolf — known as BEY03F — essentially traversed the Sierra Nevada in the span of three to four days, a feat Hunnicutt believes was made possible by a low snowpack this season. She was “able to amazingly quickly cross quite mountainous terrain,” he said. “I don’t think I could do that in three days.” The roughly 60-mile journey adds to the hundreds of miles …

Wolf Alice embrace their softer side in emotional gig for Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall

Wolf Alice embrace their softer side in emotional gig for Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall

By the very nature of their name, Wolf Alice has always been a band of two halves. As frontwoman Ellie Rowsell recently noted during their Saturday Night Live UK appearance, the moniker perfectly matches their “vibe” – and since the release of their 70s-leaning fourth album The Clearing last year, those vibes have steered away from the ferociousness of their early work. On the flip side, it was their tender, vulnerable side that was on full display on Sunday night as the band brought the 2026 Teenage Cancer Trust concert series to an emotionally charged close at London’s Royal Albert Hall. © PA Images via Getty ImagesWolf Alice performing on stage during the Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall, London It was impossible not to be moved by the stories of the brave teenagers affected by cancer who took to the stage before the music began.  Verity, diagnosed with an incurable cancer condition, gave a powerful speech about the great work the charity does. In a standout moment of the night, Verity …

Yellowstone’s ravens may memorize wolf hunting hotspots—to feast

Yellowstone’s ravens may memorize wolf hunting hotspots—to feast

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. When wolves are on the hunt, a kill rarely goes unnoticed for long. In the elk- and deer-rich areas of northern Yellowstone National Park, ravens are often among the first scavengers to arrive on the scene, swooping down to feast on scraps left behind by the howling canines.  Field biologists have long assumed that the birds simply follow wolves as they track and take down their prey. However, a study published today in the journal Science provides evidence that ravens may be remembering hunting hotspots and scavenging for food, rather than chasing wolves.  “Ravens are known for their remarkable intelligence,” Matthias-Claudio Loretto, a study co-author and wildlife ecologist at Austria’s University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, tells Popular Science. “They have excellent spatial memory and are very good at learning from experience. Our study suggests they use those abilities when scavenging. In other words, they’re not just opportunists—they’re planning where to search.” The study tracked about 70 common ravens (Corvus …
