Zohran Mamdani makes ‘high-risk, high-reward’ move to reshape New York’s voice in Washington

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is seeking to put his stamp on the city’s congressional delegation with a trio of endorsements against incumbent lawmakers and their picks, a move that could further expand the power of his democratic socialist movement or thwart its progress — and dent his own image in the process. He is backing former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who joined forces with Mamdani in last year’s mayoral election, in a contest to oust Rep. Dan Goldman in a district split between Manhattan and Brooklyn. In another Brooklyn and Queens seat, Mamdani is backing state Assembly member Claire Valdez in a contest against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso — the choice of the district’s …

The Knicks Fans Are Coming! New York’s Basketball Fanatics Descend on San Antonio for Game 1 of the NBA Finals

Hotel Emma, a repurposed 19th-century brewhouse in the Pearl district of midtown San Antonio, is used to accommodating high rollers. Past guests include Paul McCartney, Adam Sandler, and Cher, who has called it “one of the most unique, beautiful hotels ever.” But it has never played host to what is perhaps the wealthiest and most famous fan base in all of professional sports, staring down a chance to end a championship drought of over 50 years. When New York Knicks fans arrive in Texas on Wednesday for Game 1 of the NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs, a rematch of their team’s last losing finals appearance in 1999, they will enter what Hotel Emma CEO Jon Sakshaug described as a city “on fire.” “This is as exciting as this city has been in a long, long time,” Sakshaug told Vanity Fair. “And that comes from the opponent being the Knicks, which is a world-class brand.” The Knicks’ courtside fan contingent is a complex celebrity ecosystem, with Ben Stiller and Spike Lee among the most …

New York’s Long Island Rail Road Strike Halts Busiest US Commuter Line

New York’s Long Island Rail Road Strike Halts Busiest US Commuter Line

By Shubham Kalia and Mihika Sharma May 16 (Reuters) – About 3,500 workers at New York’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) on Saturday went on strike for the first time in 32 years after failing to reach a wage agreement, halting the busiest commuter rail system in the United States, according to a union statement. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation ‌Authority (MTA) confirmed the suspension of the ‌service on its website. The LIRR serves nearly 300,000 passengers daily and the strike comes ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters union said in a statement that the strike was launched by a group of five unions. It said the workers had gone three years without raises during the bargaining process. SEVERE CONGESTION AND DELAYS EXPECTED “This strike would not have happened if the MTA and LIRR offered our members the reasonable terms the government recommended multiple times,” Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen President Mark Wallace said. “We hope LIRR gets serious soon to avoid further unnecessary disruptions for hundreds of thousands …

Jack Schlossberg Is the Clout Candidate for New York’s Young Professionals

Jack Schlossberg Is the Clout Candidate for New York’s Young Professionals

Leah Cumming, a furniture designer, hosted a meet and greet with the candidate in April at her Chelsea pad. It was a pizza, wine, and cake night for around 70 people. Guests stood and sat around Cumming’s living room as the candidate spoke to the crew of mostly late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings for about 20 minutes. By the end, his button-down shirt had come untucked as he worked the room. It felt “social” and “not too, too political,” says Lilly Sisto, a 30-year-old influencer who attended. “Super casual.” “Make America Great Again” animated a swath of working class voters who were typically disengaged from politics. By way of response, Schlossberg offers his “Believe in Something Again,” a slogan he hopes will unlock a coalition of big-city professionals, Fashion Institute of Technology matriculators, and real-life Gossip Girl types. Their interest in the bakeoff to succeed 78-year-old Jerry Nadler in Congress often revolves around one person. “I think they’re all irrelevant,” says one young Schlossberg organizer about the candidates in the race who aren’t TikTok-massive descendants …

New York’s Elite Come Together at The Hollywood Reporter’s Most Powerful People in Media Party

New York’s Elite Come Together at The Hollywood Reporter’s Most Powerful People in Media Party

As the media industry has evolved, so has the guest list for this event. This year, there were a large number of content creators in the room, from fashion commentator Nicky Campbell to Recess Therapy’s Julian Shapiro-Barnum. Hot Ones host Sean Evans was featured on the Most Powerful People in Media list and contemplated who his next dream guest would be. “Tom Cruise,” he said. “I just know I could crush that interview.” Writer, professor, and opinionist Roxane Gay was on hand to weigh in on the most important news story of the past month: The Summer House scandal playing out on Bravo. “It’s gotten a little ridiculous and overblown,” she said. “But it’s the best thing to happen to the show.” She admitted to not being a Summer House fanatic; however, she is all-in on Real Housewives of Rhode Island. Cohen, who was close by, would be happy to hear the news of a fan. Print media was alive and well represented at the party, with W’s Sara Moonves in attendance alongside New York …

I stayed at New York’s A-list haunt The Lowell Hotel where stars get ready for Met Ball

I stayed at New York’s A-list haunt The Lowell Hotel where stars get ready for Met Ball

When Madonna divorced Sean Penn in the late eighties, New York’s ultra-private Lowell Hotel was her bolt hole of choice as she recovered from the split. The Vogue singer checked into a suite at the iconic hotel in Manhattan’s Upper East Side for a lengthy nine months and reportedly requested a bedroom be turned into a gym during her stay. © The LowellA suite at The Lowell Loved by stars for its exclusive address, chic design and discretion, the famed five-star establishment still attracts big names in 2026, and when I stay there for a city break, I can see why it’s so popular. The luxury hotel – where suites outnumber rooms – is just a five-minute drive from the world-famous Met Museum. I ask if stars get ready here before the annual Met Ball and I’m told yes, some do, due to its close proximity to the venue. It’s not surprising… stores such as Hermes, Chanel and Tiffany’s are just around the corner, along with the shopping paradise of Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s. © The LowellOne of the chic rooms at the …

Zoe Leonard Departs Hauser & Wirth for New York’s Maxwell Graham

Zoe Leonard Departs Hauser & Wirth for New York’s Maxwell Graham

Zoe Leonard, a celebrated artist whose work is headed to the Venice Biennale next week, has departed one of the world’s biggest art galleries and joined the roster of a much smaller one based only in New York. Until earlier this year, Leonard was represented by Hauser & Wirth, a gallery with 14 locations worldwide. She has now departed that gallery and joined Maxwell Graham, a much less blue-chip space that is known for its spare presentations of conceptual art. Maxwell Graham will represent Leonard alongside her longtime galleries, Cologne’s Galeria Gisela Capitain and Milan’s Raffaella Cortese. Related Articles Maxwell Graham’s roster is dominated mainly by artists at least a generation younger than Leonard, among them Cameron Rowland, Ser Serpas, Hamishi Farah, and Tiffany Sia. “Zoe Leonard’s work has observed the world,” Maxwell Graham wrote in its announcement on Friday. “For over 40 years Leonard has been among the most critically acclaimed artists of her generation.” Leonard’s work is often marked by an interest in loss and decay, in ways both literal and not. One …

At the Kings Trust Global Gala, King Charles and Queen Camilla Give New York’s Glitterati Something to Talk About

At the Kings Trust Global Gala, King Charles and Queen Camilla Give New York’s Glitterati Something to Talk About

The first thing you learn about attending a cocktail party that includes King Charles—as I did last night at Christie’s—is that you’ll spend nearly every minute thinking about King Charles. I say thinking, because as any New Yorker knows, obsessively talking about a celebrity guest is déclassé. Yet try as you might to chitchat about summer vacations (Greece) or new restaurants (Marcel) or the $100-million-dollar Jackson Pollock hanging on the wall that will hit the auction block in a few weeks (should we pull a Louvre-style heist?), everyone, including you, will be craning their necks and checking their watches, waiting for one man to walk into the room. So is the power of the royal family, whose pomp and circumstance charmed even Donald Trump during their US visit to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary. Part of the fanfare is that he rarely appears here—the last time King Charles visited New York was 2007. Another part is his immense global fame. And yet another part is, while celebrities are a dime a thousand—there’s only one King …

New Scientist recommends New York’s Bone Museum and Gecko Gallery

New Scientist recommends New York’s Bone Museum and Gecko Gallery

A shot from Karmela’s trip to The Bone Museum, New York Karmela Padavic-Callaghan Have you ever found yourself spending a Saturday morning staring at a wall covered in human spines? Or, maybe, staring into the eyes of a newly discovered reptile? Recently, I had a chance to do both, as my best friend took me to visit The Bone Museum and The Gecko Gallery, which are conveniently located down the hall from each other in an unassuming building in New York’s Bushwick neighbourhood. The Bone Museum boasts the largest collection of human osteology displayed to the public in the US. In fact, the “spine wall”, which immediately drew my eye as we entered, is the biggest collection of human spinal columns on display in the world. The museum offers a fascinating insight into how conditions like gigantism and diseases such as syphilis can change and deform bones, as well as affect how they are preserved. It also focuses on the medical bone trade, offering a somewhat macabre look at its history and answering modern-day questions …

Fraenkel Gallery Partners with New York’s Metrograph for Artist-Curated Series

Fraenkel Gallery Partners with New York’s Metrograph for Artist-Curated Series

San Francisco–based Fraenkel Gallery has partnered with Metrograph to have six of the artists it represents select one film each that will screen at the theater from May 8–17, with select encore screenings to follow. The collaboration will open with Weems’s selection, No Country for Old Men (2007). In addition to choosing the film, which a release describes as pointing to the artist’s “sustained engagement with power, violence, and the shaping of American mythologies,” Weems will also be on hand for the May 8 screening to introduce the film. After the screening, director Joel Coen will participate in an audience Q&A. Related Articles “Fraenkel Gallery Presents,” as the series is titled, dates back to 2024 when the gallery first organized a film festival at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco. “It’s been a wonderful way to bring people together in person while supporting independent cinema, and we’ve been so pleased with the response from our artists and audiences,” gallery director Christian Whitworth told ARTnews in an email. “As a series curated entirely by visual artists, Fraenkel …
