New Zealand on right path ahead of World Cup despite losing to Boks

BALTIMORE, Maryland, Sept 13 : New Zealand coach Dave Rennie said his side had made strong strides towards next year’s World Cup despite losing their four-test series against reigning world champions South Africa. The All Blacks won the first test in the series but lost the next three as the Springboks kept up their top ranking, clinching the series with a 43-28 victory in the last test played in the United States on Saturday. “We’ll wake up tomorrow and know we’re moving in the right direction. We scored 17 tries in the four tests. We’re in a good place but tonight will hurt,” he said after the defeat. “I thought we defended pretty well throughout the series but got beaten by some of their flash boys tonight.” Rennie said South Africa were setting the benchmark one year out from next year’s World Cup in Australia where the Springboks will be seeking a third successive triumph.  “They’re where we want to get to. We’ve been together for 10 or 11 weeks while they have a lot of …

Wiese relishing one last shot at New Zealand to wrap up series

Wiese relishing one last shot at New Zealand to wrap up series

Sept 8 : South Africa number eight Jasper Wiese is relishing the physical contest against old foes New Zealand in unfamiliar surroundings in Baltimore on Saturday as the battered and bruised sides meet for the fourth weekend in a row. The Springboks lead the four-game Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series 2-1 heading into the final fixture, with both sides having lost key players to injury in what has been an intriguing sequence of matches full of blood and thunder. Wiese is the battering ram for the South Africans with his strong carries and will be asked to go hard again at the All Blacks defence. Not that he minds. “The physical contest is always the nicest part for me,” Wiese told reporters on Tuesday. “Sometimes you are getting dominated, and sometimes you dominate. You won’t win every contact point. “The All Blacks are a physical team, we know that. I am always sore after the game but you take a few painkillers on the Sunday and get the body going again on the Monday. Then rinse …

New Zealand drugs regulator approves use of MDMA to treat severe PTSD | New Zealand

New Zealand drugs regulator approves use of MDMA to treat severe PTSD | New Zealand

Two psychiatrists in New Zealand won approval on Friday to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade MDMA to people with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The move by New Zealand’s pharmaceutical regulatory body Medsafe makes the country only the second worldwide to approve the party drug for use in treating PTSD, following Australia in 2023. “PTSD ruins lives and is difficult to treat,” said the deputy prime minister, David Seymour, who last year backed the approval of magic mushrooms to treat people with severe depression. “MDMA can be very effective at treating it through psychedelic-assisted therapy.” New Zealand is committed to opening up access to “innovative treatments”, Seymour said. PTSD is a mental health condition that develops after a person experiences or is threatened by traumatic events such as death, combat or sexual assault. There are clinical trials in the United States after the Food and Drug Administration rejected legalising MDMA’s medicinal use in 2024, saying there was not enough evidence it was safe or effective. Pharmaceutical treatment options for PTSD in the US have so far been limited …

Kolisi, Kolbe lead South Africa to 33-26 second test win over New Zealand

CAPE TOWN, Aug 29 : South Africa captain Siya Kolisi marked his return from injury with a try as the hosts edged New Zealand 33-26 in a tense second test on Saturday, levelling the four-match Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series at 1-1. The world champion Springboks were much improved on their sloppy showing in the first test and had the ascendancy in the contact area and breakdown in another bruising battle. Centres Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende also scored tries to go with 18 points from the boot of wing Cheslin Kolbe to the delight of most of the 56,589 in attendance. New Zealand scored four tries through scrumhalf Cam Roigard, fullback Damian McKenzie, wing Leroy Carter and number eight Ardie Savea, but were disrupted at the line-out and have some work to do at the set-piece ahead of the third match in Johannesburg on Saturday.   “It has been a tough week, but I am grateful for the coaching staff and the plans they made for us. Last week we did not take our opportunities …

New Zealand flanker Segner ruled out of rest of South Africa tour

New Zealand flanker Segner ruled out of rest of South Africa tour

Aug 26 : Flanker Anton Segner has been ruled out of the rest of New Zealand’s tour of South Africa following ankle surgery, coach Dave Rennie said. German-born Segner was a late withdrawal from the All Blacks’ match-day squad for the first test at Ellis Park after complaining of a swollen ankle, which was later diagnosed as acute inflammatory arthritis. Rennie said Segner needed keyhole surgery to clean the ankle out. “He’ll come with us to Cape Town but he won’t take part in the rest of the tour,” Rennie told reporters after the 41-35 win over the Lions at Ellis Park.  Rennie said no replacements would be called up as he believed the squad had enough loose forwards to cover them for the three remaining tests in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Baltimore. The All Blacks remain unbeaten on tour, having claimed wins over four provincial opponents and upset the Springboks 33-16 at Ellis Park. Source link

Meet Fat Papi, the little-known NZ rapper catapulted to Billboard 100 fame | New Zealand

Two months ago, Baban Hussain, a 22-year-old Kurdish New Zealander, was working from a self-run studio in Auckland, putting out music to a few thousand followers as little-known rapper Fat Papi. Then, as modern fairytales go, he made a viral hit that has amassed over 7.5bn views across YouTube, gained him nearly 10m new monthly listeners on Spotify, and catapulted him on to global charts – including the US Billboard Hot 100. The last feat made history: Hussain is the first Kurdish artist to land on the Billboard Hot 100, and only the second New Zealand rapper to do so. “It’s a whirlwind,” Hussain tells the Guardian on a video call from a hotel in New York City where he has been promoting his music and meeting with industry. “My life is completely different. It’s a very intense time and honestly amazing and everything we have ever wanted.” Hussain seems candid and relaxed despite having only spoken to media a handful of times. He is joined on the call by producer Owen Omen, an Australian-based …

‘Like a seagull in a stiff breeze’: what it’s like flying into Wellington, the world’s windiest city | New Zealand

‘Like a seagull in a stiff breeze’: what it’s like flying into Wellington, the world’s windiest city | New Zealand

It had been a smooth late-July flight from Auckland, until the plane started its descent into Wellington. Then the bumps and swaying began. “The more we went down, the rockier it got,” says Laura, a Wellington resident who wished to give her first name only. “There was one point where we must have got a horrible cross-wind and it felt like the plane was about to flip over. At that point, the entire flight screamed.” “I genuinely felt like I was about to die, which was pretty awful … and I had eaten a horrible burger before going on the plane – that all came back up.” The plane lurched back up into the sky. The pilot announced the weather was set to worsen and the plane returned to Auckland. “We often call it a ‘Welly welcome’ when you get a bumpy landing, but this was a different level of scary, and obviously the pilots knew that because they didn’t land and didn’t try to do it again,” Laura says. Anyone who has frequently flown …
