Daryl Dixon star Norman Reedus has teased fans what lies ahead as he prepares to say goodbye to the beloved character.
Since first appearing on The Walking Dead in 2010, Daryl Dixon (played by Reedus) has become a firm favourite of the franchise – so much so that, after the series ended, he became central to his own spin-off.
Now, after missing San Diego Comic-Con, Reedus shared a post on Instagram sharing new photos after wrapping the upcoming fourth, and final, season, and confirmed how long fans have to wait to see what plays out.
Sharing a string of pictures from set, he wrote: “Daryl Dixon’s final episodes are coming 2027! I can’t quite believe we’re here. Thank you to every single one of you who joined us on this journey – through the good, the brutal and everything in between.
“We’ve gotten a lot of bruises, scars and concussions along the way. A lot of hard work went into this series, especially the crews.
“This last chapter is gonna hit different and hit hard. I can’t wait for you all to see them. See you in 2027. Missing u all at Comicon.”
Photos include him sitting in a car with blood completely covering the window, drinking champagne as he wrapped up filming, and emotionally hugging Melissa McBride, who has played Daryl’s long-standing and closest confidante, Carol Peletier.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has run for three seasons to date, with the gruff, renegade survivor finding himself washing up in France with no recollection of how he got there.
However, the country is filled with new and terrifying variants of “walkers” complete with new abilities those back home didn’t have, as well as a group known as Pouvoir des Vivants, who want to take control of the country and the survivors that remain and put them under their rule.
Desperate to figure out a way back to the US, he agrees to help a group of nuns transport the young boy Laurent across the country to protect him from those who consider him a sign of the future of humanity, or even God-like, after his mother gave birth to him after being infected.
But as he continues his quest, he finds new allies along the way that complicate his feelings about where he’s meant to be, while reuniting with old ones, too.
McBride joined the show in season two, which was subtitled The Book of Carol, and has remained on the series ever since.
Filming for the final season completed in November last year, with Reedus sharing the news with fans online and saying goodbye to the character as he hung up the leather jacket for good.
“Last filming day today for Daryl Dixon,” he wrote at the time. “It’s been such a joy for me to play this guy with all of u for this long. I feel really blessed. Truly. Thank you all really from my heart.”
A confirmed release date for the episodes not yet known.
