Dolly Parton was an open book about the cosmetic changes she made to her body before her death at 80 on August 25, 2026, even once revealing that she spent $1 million on breast augmentations. 

However, it wasn’t just her fondness for plastic surgery that garnered attention.

Over the years, speculation grew that Dolly was hiding several tattoos under her favored long-sleeved outfits.

In 2006, Dolly attended a special-edition DVD launch party for the 25th anniversary of her film, 9 to 5 – in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin – wearing a white long-sleeved shirt. 

Some eagle-eyed fans spotted what appeared to be a large butterfly tattoo peeking through the top, which led to years of many people claiming Dolly was covered in ink. 

Dolly’s tattoos

In 2020, she finally put the rumors to rest, confirming that she did have some “tasteful” tattoos. “I do have some tattoos; that’s true. But they’re tasteful. I’m not a tattoo girl,” she told People. 

Dolly admitted that she decided to get tattoos to cover up scars from previous surgeries, revealing there was a time she was “very sick for a while” and “had to wear a feeding tube.”

The tube left an indentation on her side, which she “didn’t like,” so she turned it into a beehive.

“I like to make positives out of negatives,” she explained. “I had a little beehive tattooed over it — a little yellow-and-brown beehive with a tiny little bee on top of the hive. The mouth of it is that little sinkhole.”

“My tattoos are pretty, they’re artful and they usually started out to cover some scar, not to make a big statement,” she added. 

Elaborating further during an interview with W Magazine a year later, Dolly said: “Most of my tattoos came because I’m very fair and I have a tendency to scar when I get any kind of cut. 

“I’ve had surgeries for different things, and if the scars didn’t heal properly, I just gotta put tattoos to take the sting out.”

Dolly’s ‘pastel’ ink

Dolly admitted she had more than one tattoo, but she didn’t have them in typical black ink, as hers were all “pastel.”

“I don’t have the real heavy, dark tattoos. Mine are all pastel. And I have more than one!” she said at the time.

Alongside her beehive, Dolly’s tattoos included bows, ribbons, and butterflies. “Butterflies don’t sting, they don’t bite, and they are so beautiful,” she explained. 

“I just kind of related to them with my own personality. I claimed them as my little symbol.” 

One tattoo the “Jolene” singer never had was a tribute to her late husband, Carl Dean, whom she was married to for 58 years before his death in March 2025.

Dolly said she had nothing permanent to symbolize her husband because “he’s tattooed on [my] heart.”

In typical Dolly fashion, she also joked about the rumors of her alleged sleeve, adding: “Who knows, I may get some later. I may just have to get covered with tattoos just so everybody could be right!”

Dolly’s cause of death

Dolly died at 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following a “brief battle with cancer,” her publicist, Marcel Pariseua, announced in a statement.

“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” Marcel’s statement read.

“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.”

He continued: “Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.”
