Nintendo has revealed Metroid Ravenous as the next 2D game in the series, and we don’t have long to wait for its release.

After Metroid Dread brought the series back from a long hiatus in 2021, fans have been clamouring for more Samus action.

And following a relatively mixed reception for her 3D return in last year’s Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, fans will no doubt be itching to go back down a dimension for a new chapter.

In a reveal trailer from today’s Nintendo Direct, we got our first look at Ravenous, which appears to tell the story of Samus trapped under the surface of a moon looking a way off world.

It also shows several full-3D cutscenes in which she fights against an unknown enemy, a samurai-like character clad in black, metal armour who manages to stab Samus through her Power Suit.

To round out the action, it was also confirmed that Metroid Ravenous will release on 28 January 2028.

Unfortunately, unlike Metroid Prime 4, Metroid Ravenous will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, so if you’re after a bit more Samus then now might be the time to upgrade.

There will also be a couple of new Amiibo to go with the release, and a Deluxe Edition of the game including some goodies like a nifty steelbook.

Considering Metroid Dread is currently sitting at a pretty 88/100 from critics on Metacritic, with a user score of 8.8/10, it’s safe to say that Samus’s return to 2D gaming was a hit with fans.

Here’s hoping that, with just over four months to go, Nintendo can pull off another masterpiece for us to enjoy.

Now, if they could just get Metroid Prime 2 and 3 on the Switch, that would be great, please and thank you.
