Consider it a royal ensemble that passed the wind tunnel test. Kate Middleton chose a scene-stealing statement hat for the inauguration of the first Archbishop of Canterbury in the history of the Anglican Church. And despite windy conditions in the city of Kent, Middleton and Prince William were able to fulfill their latest diplomatic duties in style.

Middleton accompanied William, the Prince of Wales, to the “enthronement” ceremony of Sarah Mullally, the first woman to head the Church of England since the 16th-century Reformation and subsequent break with Rome, which was held in Canterbury Cathedral. It was a landmark event signifying the symbolic beginning of the ministry of the former NHS nurse who was ordained a priest in 2002 and became the first woman bishop of London in 2018. Before her, starting with St. Augustine in 597 A.D., only men held the position of archbishop of Canterbury: women after all were only admitted to the priesthood in the Church of England in 1994.

For the extraordinarily important appointment, the Princess of Wales wore a warm wool and cashmere coat by Suzannah London, a favorite brand of Sophie of Edinburgh. It is a long overcoat with defined shoulders, wide peaked lapels, black silk satin trim, and the Prince of Wales checkered pattern.
