Doctor Who teases return of beloved character last seen 11 years ago

We’re now less than a month away from the release of new Doctor Who global multi-platform story, Circuit Breaker, and we’ve just got our first look at the return of a beloved character.

As was previously announced when the project was unveiled, Ingrid Oliver will be reprising her role as Petronella Osgood, having previously played the character opposite the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors.

The character first appeared in 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, and was last seen in season 9’s The Zygon Inversion, released in 2015.

Circuit Breaker, which launches on 25 June, is a story which will unfold throughout the summer across audio, publishing, gaming and digital, bringing together a range of Doctor Who partners including Titan Comics, Doctor Who Magazine, BBC Audiobooks, East Side Games, Puffin, BBC Books and Big Finish.

The new image teasing Osgood’s return was posted to the show’s official social channels, alongside the caption: “Osgood is awaiting YOU in the Black Archive! Sign up to UNIT HQ on the #DoctorWho website for exclusive access to the first instalment of CIRCUIT BREAKER, coming 25th June!”

The story will kick off in the depths of UNIT’s most secure facility, the Black Archive, where familiar objects have been pulled through time and space surrounded with a dangerous energy signature threatening to tear reality apart.

The synopsis for the story says: “With time running out, newly appointed Head of the Black Archive, Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) and her assistant Andrew (Omari Douglas) turn to the only person who can help… the Doctor (Jo Martin).

“This is no ordinary crisis, and not the Time Lord they are familiar with. As the Doctor confronts her most infamous enemies such as the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans and a rogue Weeping Angel, she is forced to complete a mission with an insidious presence lurking in the shadows.

“Secrets begin to surface, and trust between UNIT and the Doctor begins to erode as those who idolise her start to question if she really is the Time Lord they thought they knew…”

Jo Martin’s version of the Doctor, known as The Fugitive Doctor, was introduced in season 12 opposite Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. She most recently returned for a cameo appearance opposite Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor in The Story & the Engine.

Circuit Breaker should help to fill the gap between on screen stories for fans, as they wait for the sci-fi show’s next instalment. This is currently expected to be a Christmas special, although a recent report has suggested the episode may be delayed until Easter.

I studied medicine in Brighton and qualified as a doctor and for the last 2 years been writing blogs. While there are are many excellent blogs devoted to the topics of faith, humanism, atheism, political viewpoints, and wider kinds of rationalism and philosophical doubt, those are not the only focus here.Im going to blog about what ever comes to my mind in a day.
