Keir Stamer has insisted he won’t resign, despite terrible local election results in which Labour lost more than half the council seats it was defending. He is delivering a major speech today – and has said he hopes to remain Prime Minister for 10 more years.

But many Labour MPs are determined to force him out. Backbencher Catherine West has said she will launch a leadership contest if nobody else does. There are many potential replacements for Sir Keir, but the candidate a lot of MPs are talking about is Andy Burnham, currently the mayor of Greater Manchester.

Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, is calling for Mr Burnham to be allowed to return to the House of Commons as an MP – which would allow him to stand for the Labour leadership and, if he wins, become Prime Minister.

The question for Labour is whether Mr Burnham would do a better job in Number 10 than Sir Keir. Would the country be better off if Mr Burnham took over?
