Nigel Farage says ‘white lives matter’ after Henry Nowak murder | Politics | News

Nigel Farage delivers his statement on what he called the UK’s two-tier culture (Image: Getty) Raging Nigel Farage warned the “rights and privileges of white people matter less than those of ethnic minorities” as anger erupted over the police handling of the Henry Nowak murder. The Reform UK leader said victim Mr Nowak was “actually treated in a way that meant an accusation of a racial slur was treated more seriously than an act of murder”. Vickrum Digwa, 23, was jailed for life, with a minimum of 21 years, for stabbing Henry, 18, with a ceremonial knife. And Digwa claimed he had been a victim of racist abuse. Police bodycam footage showed officers handcuffing Mr Nowak and ignorning claims he had been stabbed, with one even telling him “I don’t think you have mate”. The Reform UK leader said: “What does he say? I can’t breathe. “Familiar words. Remember career criminal George Floyd, who died in appalling circumstances in Midwest America a few years ago. “Remember the reaction to that and the way the police …

POLL: Should the UK reverse Brexit and rejoin the EU? | Politics | News

The UK made an historic decision in 2016 to leave the European Union, but the debate about Brexit has not ended. Some people never accepted the decision at the time. However, some senior politicians are now talking openly about rejoining the EU. Former health secretary Wes Streeting, who hopes to become Labour leader, says the UK should eventually rejoin. Andy Burnham, another possible candidate for No 10, previously said he hoped the UK would rejoin one day, but more recently said that is not a priority for now. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wants closer links with the EU as part of a “reset”. He has said he does not want to rejoin the EU. However, recently, he has declined to rule out changing this policy after a future general election. Earlier this week, Mr Burnham warned against getting stuck in a “permanent rut” of Brexit arguments. The Greater Manchester Mayor, who hopes to return to Westminster in the Makerfield by-election, said Brexit had been “damaging” but “the last thing we should do right now …

Labour never accepted Brexit – now they see their chance to reverse it | Politics | News

Labour leadership contenders Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting (Image: PA) Many Left-wingers never really accepted the decision to leave the European Union. They think the British public made a terrible mistake by voting for Brexit in 2016. And that was certainly the view among Labour MPs – but they didn’t dare state their honest opinion out loud. Now, Labour’s leadership turmoil has given them a chance to say what they really think. And the UK could soon have not just a Labour leader but a prime minister who wants to rejoin the EU and isn’t afraid to say so. David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister, has just provided a stark illustration of Labour’s lack of candour. He was asked directly on Sky News on Monday whether he supported rejoining the EU. Keir Starmer savaged for failures in tackling child grooming | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has been blasted for not acting fast enough to tackle child abuse as his Government begins to crumble. Jess Phillips hit out at the Prime Minister after resigning from her role as safeguarding minister. She is the second minister to step down amid growing pressure on the Labour leader. In her resignation letter, Ms Phillips stated she could not continue to serve under the current leadership as she was “not seeing the change I think I, and the country, expect”. Ms Phillips, the most senior member of the Government to resign so far, wrote in a letter to the PM that Sir Keir was “a good man fundamentally” but that was “not enough”. She added that she could no longer serve as a minister “under the current leadership”. Miatta Fahnbulleh, a communities minister and an ally of Angela Rayner, earlier became the first frontbencher to quit and call for Sir Keir to go. The Prime Minister dared rebels to oust him on Tuesday, telling a Cabinet meeting that “the Labour Party has …

POLL: Would Andy Burnham be a better PM than Keir Starmer? | Politics | News

Keir Stamer has insisted he won’t resign, despite terrible local election results in which Labour lost more than half the council seats it was defending. He is delivering a major speech today – and has said he hopes to remain Prime Minister for 10 more years. But many Labour MPs are determined to force him out. Backbencher Catherine West has said she will launch a leadership contest if nobody else does. There are many potential replacements for Sir Keir, but the candidate a lot of MPs are talking about is Andy Burnham, currently the mayor of Greater Manchester. Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, is calling for Mr Burnham to be allowed to return to the House of Commons as an MP – which would allow him to stand for the Labour leadership and, if he wins, become Prime Minister. The question for Labour is whether Mr Burnham would do a better job in Number 10 than Sir Keir. Would the country be better off if Mr Burnham took over? Do you believe Andy …

Humiliation for Starmer as UK warship HMS Iron Duke taken out of service | Politics | News

The Royal Navy has been left with only five active frigates after another warship was withdrawn, it has emerged. It is believed HMS Iron Duke is unlikely to set sail again, heaping further pressure on the stretched Senior Service. HMS Iron Duke has reportedly been stripped of her weapons and sensors. The Type 23 frigate has not been to sea since October and has been effectively withdrawn from active service, according to specialist website Navy Lookout. It comes less than three years after the warship completed a five-year life extension programme, costing £103 million. The Navy’s Duke-class Type 23 frigates have an end of service date in 2035 but are gradually being retired. There has been no formal decommissioning announcement regarding HMS Iron Duke. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said any decision will be announced “in the usual way”. Retiring HMS Iron Duke would leave the Navy with just five frigates, with HMS Richmond’s decommissioning this year confirmed. The Type 23s are mainly used to monitor potential Russian activity in waters around the UK, with …

Zack Polanski has a bizarre ‘personal appeal’ – one surprising number proves it | Politics | News

Zack Polanski has led the Green to polling success (Image: Getty) Whatever happened to Jeremy Corbyn’s supporters? There was a time when they turned out in droves to hear the Lefty ex-Labour leader speak, chanting his name and dreaming of a better tomorrow. It nearly made him prime minister. Close to 13million people voted Labour in 2017, when Mr Corbyn was in charge, while just 9.7million backed Labour in the 2024 General Election that put Sir Keir into No 10. So it’s a little surprising that Mr Corbyn’s new party, the bizarrely named Your Party, has made little impact. Instead, Left-wingers, including many former Corbynites, are backing the Green Party, led by the charismatic Zack Polanski. Examples include Jennie Formby, the former general secretary of the Labour Party in the Corbyn era, who recently announced she was defecting to the Greens. Another high-profile convert is feisty journalist Owen Jones, once Mr Corbyn’s staunchest defender in the media and now a Polanski fan. They’re just the tip of the iceberg. The Green Party won 6.7% of …

Reeves says ‘I’m going to be straight with people’ in new warning | UK | News

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has issued a new warning to “British families and businesses,” saying the Iran War will come at a cost to people in the UK. It comes as US-Iran peace talks ended without a deal. Ms Reeves said that although the scale of the costs was not known, the Government was committed to providing support to those who need it. Britain will host further talks on reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane with a coalition of countries next week. The meeting will continue the Government’s efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the strait, which serves as a shipping route for oil and gas. It comes after the Prime Minister spoke to Donald Trump about the need for a “practical plan” to get ships going through the area amid suggestions Iran wants to charge vessels for passage. US Vice President JD Vance was in Pakistan for peace negotiations with Iran, though a 21-hour session ended without an agreement in the early hours of Sunday. Mr Vance said Tehran refused to commit …

Major update on UK’s 12 new towns as first names revealed | UK | News

Labour wants to build 12 new towns across England as part of a project estimated to cost a whopping £48 billion. The Government has vowed to start construction on at least three of the developments before the next general election as it lags behind its 1.5 million new homes in England pledge. At least 120,000 properties are expected to be built through the programme, with ministers reportedly set to announce a list of locations for the new towns next week. Other place names said to be under consideration include Pankhurst, named after the suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, and Attleeton, after the former Labour prime minister Sir Clement Attlee, who started a giant postwar new towns programme. Seacole, named after the Jamaican-British nurse Mary Seacole who treated wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, is another contender, according to The Times. Another is believed to be Athelstan — regarded as the first King of England. As many as 12 new towns are expected to be unveiled in the coming days, following an independent report identifying several areas …
