Jeff Koons Wins Appeal in Copyright Case on ‘Made in Heaven’ Series

Artist Jeff Koons has once again prevailed in a legal challenge, as a New York federal appeals court affirmed that a copyright lawsuit filed against him by artist Michael Hayden was brought too late. According to court documents filed yesterday in US District Court for the Southern District of New York, the lawsuit was dismissed for the second time on procedural grounds: Hayden waited until 2021 to file suit, which sought to assert copyright over a set piece Hayden had created that appears in a 1989 photograph from Koons’s notorious “Made in Heaven” series, which also included oil paintings and a billboard. The case centered on a Styrofoam sculpture of a coiled serpent created by Hayden for the Italian adult film star Ilona Staller (aka Cicciolina), then Koons’s collaborator (and later, wife). MILAN, July 21 : A Milan court has rejected a request for precautionary measures filed by Telecom Italia (TIM) against KKR-backed FiberCop over new tariffs for access to Italy’s main fixed-line telecoms network, grid owner FiberCop said. The dispute centres on the terms governing TIM’s access to the fixed-line network it sold to a KKR-led consortium in 2024 under a restructuring aimed at cutting the former phone monopoly’s debt. TIM had asked the court, under a fast-track procedure, to order FiberCop to notify telecoms regulator AGCOM of the economic conditions set out in a long-term service agreement governing TIM’s access to the network assets. In a ruling issued on Tuesday, the Milan court rejected TIM’s request, saying the interpretation of the Master Service Agreement (MSA) put forward by TIM was not supported by the contract, FiberCop said in a statement. 31 January 2026  Nancy Guthrie is last seen on Saturday night when her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, drops her home in the Catalina Foothills at around 9:48 pm. 1 February 2026  A masked individual disconnects a doorbell camera at Nancy’s home at 1:47 am.  Software detects further motion roughly 25 minutes later. At 2:28 am, Nancy’s pacemaker app disconnects from her phone, suggesting she is moved out of range. Later that morning, a friend contacts the Guthrie family after Nancy fails to appear for church.  Relatives arrive at the property just before noon and notify the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.  Police arrive at 12:15pm and determine Nancy is missing under “concerning” circumstances. 2 February 2026  Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirms a shift in the investigation, stating: “I believe she was abducted.” 3 February 2026  Authorities begin analysing a ransom note received by media outlets, which contains specific details about Nancy’s clothing. Arizona Cardinals vice president of player personnel Ryan Gold has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL after the league concluded he violated its gambling policy. The discipline took effect immediately, and the league said Gold cannot seek reinstatement until after the 2026 NFL season. League officials said the suspension stems from rules that bar NFL employees from betting on league games. The NFL also said its investigation found no evidence that inside information was used and no indication that the integrity of any game was affected. NFL now has confirmed the indefinite suspension of Cardinals personnel executive Ryan Gold for violating the league’s gambling policy. (RNS) — Current and former members of New York City’s Abyssinian Baptist Church have filed an appeal in state Supreme Court arguing that a 2025 court ruling was in error when it dismissed their case challenging the election of the congregation’s current senior pastor. The four plaintiffs filed a brief July 9 with the New York Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, 1st Department, requesting that the election of the Rev. Kevin R. Johnson be set aside so a new election can be held. The plaintiffs argue that the court “misread” the church’s bylaws when it denied their petition, according to the filing.  Johnson’s election as the Harlem church’s new senior pastor was announced in June 2024, and he was installed in September of that year. He succeeded the Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, who served as a minister at the historically Black church for 50 years and died in 2022. He, a Presbyterian minister. Their courtship begins with a rejection, then unfolds across years of letters written on the brink of the Civil War. They often chastise each other for not writing quickly enough and make wry remarks on the nature of the new paper or ink. The letters are funny, intimate, tender. They’re idiosyncratic—one learns all sorts of unlikely things about Virginia and New England in the 1850s. A housing developer’s plans for up to 149 homes to be built in a former coal mining village have been given the green light by the Planning Inspectorate. In early 2025, Countryside Properties (UK) Limited, which operates under its parent company Vistry, tabled initial plans to build 149 homes on land at Stubbinghill Farm, in Brand Lane, Stanton Hill, in Sutton in Ashfield. Ashfield District Council was expected to determine the application within the relevant timeframe but this was not the case, meaning the developer lodged an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate earlier in 2026 for a decision. Plans have been previously proposed for the site in the past, including one for 142 homes in 2020 and another for 141 homes in 2022 but these were both thrown out over concerns the homes would result in “significant harm” to the character of Brand Lane and wider area. Fears of “further encroachment” into the countryside were also noted, along with a new development that would create “significant volumes” of traffic without improvements in the area. These …

Daily Mail publisher Associated Newspapers will be ordered to pay damages after a Court of Appeal ruling found in Vince’s favour – the first successful data protection claim of its kind. Vince declared the judgment means “headlines won’t be the same again”. In June 2023 the Daily Mail published an article on Mail+ with the headline: “Labour repays £100,000 to sex pest donor.” The term was “‘sex harassment’ donor” in the print version. Vince was pictured twice alongside the print article, and one of the images featured a circle around his face. But he was not the man referred to in the headline. A Ninth Circuit panel spent Friday’s oral argument closely examining whether Kalshi Inc. and Robinhood Markets can keep offering sports event contracts to people located on tribal lands while the underlying lawsuit moves forward. The appeal stems from a district court decision denying a preliminary injunction requested by three California tribes in Blue Lake Rancheria, et al. v. Kalshi, Inc., et al. Representing Blue Lake Rancheria, Chicken Ranch Rancheria and Picayune Rancheria, attorney Lester Marston argued the contracts become Class III gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act whenever someone enters into one from tribal land. “I go on the Blue Lake Rancheria … I see a Kalshi app and I download the app,” he said. Marston then described a user placing money on a sports contract whose payout would depend on the outcome of a game. “If it walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck,” Marston said. A judge pointed to what appeared to be little practical difference between Kalshi’s product and a traditional sportsbook, noting Kalshi’s counsel had acknowledged the same …
