Atlassian launches visual AI tools and third-party agents in Confluence

Software giant Atlassian announced new AI tools and agents on Wednesday with a focus on turning data into visual assets and applications. This includes the rollout of the visual tool Remix in open beta. Remix allows enterprises to turn the data and information stored in Atlassian’s content collaboration software Confluence into assets including charts and graphics. Remix will recommend which visual format makes the most sense for the data or information at hand and create these visual assets without requiring the users to open another application or software. The company also announced three new third-party agents that run within Confluence using model context protocols (MCPs). One agent connects Confluence users to the vibe coding darling Lovable to turn product ideas and data into working prototypes. Another agent connects to app builder software Replit and allows users to convert technical documents into starter apps. The third agent works with AI presentation builder Gamma to build slides and other presentation materials. “With Remix and agents in Confluence, a single page becomes the starting point for whatever comes …

Atlassian in Trouble for Firing Employee Who Mouthed Off to CEO

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Fresh off of annihilating a tenth of its workforce, Atlassian is being accused of illegally firing an employee, Bloomberg reports. Federal prosecutors allege that the Australian software firm fired engineer Denise Unterwurzacher for criticizing its CEO over his “re-leveling” plan to effectively demote and layoff many of its staff members — and for his flippant attitude. The firing, attorneys for the National Labor Relations Board argue, amounts to an illegal retaliation against an employee. And if allowed to stand, it “would upend well-established principles” under US law, NLRB lawyer Colton Puckett said at an early March hearing in Austin, Texas, per a transcript obtained by Bloomberg. Labor laws protect an employee’s right to voice criticism and take collective action at work. Unterwurzacher’s firing centered on a June 2023 incident that took place during an “Ask Me Anything” video call with employees. While the company’s billionaire cofounder and at-the-time co-CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes explained that only a few employees would …

Atlassian Lays Off 10 Percent of Its Workforce as It Pivots to AI

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Another tech giant is culling immense numbers of workers. On Thursday, prominent Australian software firm Atlassian announced it was laying off ten percent of its workforce, or about 1,600 employees.  Like a growing number of its peers, it wasn’t shy about sharing why: a pivot to AI. The company, which makes most of its money by selling collaboration software, said it will “rebalance” its resources to focus on the “future of teamwork in the AI era,” Reuters reported. 40 percent of the firings, or about 600 employees, will come from its workforce in North America. Another 30 percent will come from Australia and 16 percent in India, Atlassian said. The company, however, refused to characterize the firings as a sign of AI replacement. “Our approach is not ‘AI replaces people,’” CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said in a memo to employees. “But it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn’t change the mix of skills we need or the number …
