SEOUL, May 26 : A Samsung Electronics’ union representing workers in non-semiconductor divisions has filed an injunction with a South Korean court in a bid to stop an ongoing vote by workers in its semiconductor division on a bonus increase, Newsis reported on Tuesday. The union comprises about 13,000 workers from the smartphones, television and home appliances divisions, the news agency said. The non-chip union took the action after being told it had no right to join the vote by unionised workers in the semiconductor division, Newsis said, citing a union representative. Around 57,000 workers at Samsung began voting on Friday on a pay deal that would ensure large bonuses for memory chip workers to avert a planned 18-day strike. Source link
Apple gave its iPhone Product Design team bonuses worth “several hundred thousand dollars” in an effort to keep them from being poached by other companies, reports Bloomberg. The bonuses were provided as restricted stock units (RSUs) that will vest over a four-year period. Hardware designers given bonuses will need to stay with Apple to get the full value of the stock award, which can range from $200,000 to $400,000 or even more depending on how Apple stock does over the next several years. Apple executives are concerned with the number of engineers the company has been losing to rivals like OpenAI. Several former Apple designers are now working on hardware products at OpenAI, including former Apple design chief Jony Ive. OpenAI has been recruiting Apple engineers that worked on the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, and it has hired over 40 former Apple employees. HSBC is preparing to award little or no bonuses to some bankers as it adopts a tougher, performance-driven pay model similar to its US rivals, according to Bloomberg. Underperforming staff in investment banking and wealth management — including some managing directors — may be encouraged to leave after bonuses are paid in the coming weeks, according to people familiar with the matter. Final decisions have not yet been made. The move reflects the strategy of CEO Georges Elhedery, who has pushed to align HSBC’s compensation practices with those of Wall Street firms. Since taking over in late 2024, he has led a major restructuring, shutting down much of the bank’s US and European deals and equity underwriting operations and merging commercial and investment banking.
