Apple TV Poised to Become Fastest Streamer to Win an EGOT

Apple TV Poised to Become Fastest Streamer to Win an EGOT

If Schmigadoon!, the Broadway adaptation of the Emmy-winning TV series of the same name, wins any of the field-leading 12 Tonys for which it is nominated at Sunday night’s Tony Awards ceremony — and it is the favorite to win several, including the most coveted of all Tonys, best musical — it would represent an historic achievement for Apple TV. Indeed, the company, which produced the TV show and co-produced the Broadway production, will have completed an EGOT — wins of at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award — and in a shorter timespan than any other streaming service. Apple TV launched in Nov. 2019, just six-and-a-half years ago. An Apple TV product was first recognized at the Emmys in 2020, when Billy Crudup won best supporting actor in a drama series for The Morning Show; at the Oscars in 2022, when CODA was awarded three statuettes, including best picture; and at the Grammys in February of this year, when Chris Stapleton’s song “Bad As I Used to Be,” from the film F1, won best country …

The Broadway Tax Credit Has Returned, For Now

The Broadway Tax Credit Has Returned, For Now

The Broadway tax credit has returned after running out of funds late last year.  As part of the recently passed New York state budget, Gov. Kathy Hochul allocated an additional $150 million for the tax credit program, which started in 2021 and had been doling out about $100 million to Broadway and Off-Broadway productions annually. The $150 million covers productions that had their first paid performance starting Dec. 1, retroactively covering those who may have missed out on the tax credit during the funding gap, as well as those with first public performances through the rest of the year. This is good news as many productions had already built the tax credit, of up to $3 million per Broadway production, into their budgets. And producers say it’s become an important talking point when convincing investors to put money into a show, as it allows commercial productions to subsidize 25 percent of their production costs and provides an easier path to recoupment.  The Broadway League, the trade association for Broadway producers and general managers, had been …

Who Will Win at the 2026 Tony Awards? Here Are Our Predictions

Who Will Win at the 2026 Tony Awards? Here Are Our Predictions

Let’s say you don’t live in New York City, or don’t consider yourself to be a theater person. (Frankly, both seem unfathomable if you’re already reading this story—but just go with it.) Why, then, should you care about the Tony Awards? Because, old chum, the Tonys—which air Sunday, June 7 on CBS and stream live on Paramount+, in a ceremony hosted by Broadway neophyte Pink—happen to be the very best and most entertaining awards show of all. We break down why on a special jazz hands-infused edition of Little Gold Men, featuring VF senior editor Hillary Busis, staff writer Chris Murphy, entertainment director Caitlin Brody, and Little Gold Men senior producer Michele O’Brien. It’s admittedly a tough moment to be in the Broadway business. Though grosses are at an all-time high, according to the Broadway League, the industry’s margins are, as always, razor-thin, particularly for musicals. A New York Times story from last September opened with the stunning fact that none of the 18 musicals that opened on Broadway in the previous season had, at …

It Took John Lithgow Less Than 24 Hours to Know He Needed to Play Roald Dahl in ‘Giant’

It Took John Lithgow Less Than 24 Hours to Know He Needed to Play Roald Dahl in ‘Giant’

Escola was excited to catch up on New York theater and see one performance in particular: Laurie Metcalf, currently starring as Linda Loman in a celebrated Death of a Salesman revival. “I saw her twice in Doll’s House Part Two, and in Three Tall Women,” says Escola. “I think she’s my favorite stage performer working right now.” Which doesn’t mean they aren’t head over heels with Maya Rudolph, who currently stars in Escola’s hit play Oh Mary, and Meg Stalter, who will take over the role next on Broadway. “I just keep thinking that, well, now no one will want to do it,” said Escola, since each Mary has been so strong. “Every person that does it, I’m like, well now people don’t want to do it.” Clearly, Escola is wrong. Although the mood at the Moss was light and amiable, Giant’s subject matter is rather heavy, speaking directly toward ongoing strife in the Middle East—even though it takes place more than 40 years ago. “It’s simply incredible how immediate the subject is, how urgent …

Luke Evans on Broadway Role in ‘Rocky Horror,’ Tony Nomination

Luke Evans on Broadway Role in ‘Rocky Horror,’ Tony Nomination

When director Sam Pinkleton began envisioning a Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, he drew up a list of qualities he believed the lead, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, needed to have.  “He had to be a truly tremendous actor. He had to be a real comedian, like a clown. He had to have a killer voice. He had to be terrifying, and also tender,” Pinkleton said. “We had to be scared of him, and we also had to want to fuck him. I also really felt strongly that it needed to be somebody who carried some kind of queerness with them, whatever that means.”  At first, Pinkleton was unsure who could embody all of that and provide a new take on the role made famous by Tim Curry. But when he met Luke Evans, an onscreen action star with a background in musical theater, he found a fit in an actor who happily contains his own contradictions.  Standing at 6 feet 8 inches in heels, Evans towers above cast members including Stephanie Hsu, Juliette Lewis, Harvey …

‘Daisy Clover,’ ‘Andromeda Strain’ Actor Was 84

‘Daisy Clover,’ ‘Andromeda Strain’ Actor Was 84

Peter Helm, the actor from Toronto who appeared on such 1960 shows as Naked City, Wagon Train and Ironside and in films including The Longest Day, Inside Daisy Clover and The Andromeda Strain, has died. He was 84. Helm died Thursday in his sleep at his home in West Hills, his friend David Timmerman told The Hollywood Reporter. Survivors include his sister, actress Anne Helm (Follow That Dream, The Magic Sword, The Iron Maiden), and a daughter, actress Tiffany Helm (Friday the 13th: A New Beginning). The colorful Helm appeared alongside Jane Fonda, Dean Jones and Joey Heatherton on Broadway in 1960 in the Josh Logan-directed There Was a Little Girl, a drama about rape, then acted onstage with Myrna Loy in a 1962 production of James Kirkwood’s There Must Be a Pony that aimed for Broadway but missed. He and Heatherton would enjoy a great friendship while traveling the world together over the years, and she told THR that he was “a great actor and a great person, top of the world.” The pair …

‘Beaches’ Musical to Close After 2026 Tony Awards Snub

‘Beaches’ Musical to Close After 2026 Tony Awards Snub

Beaches, The New Musical is the first Tonys casualty of the season and will now close May 24 after being shut out of the nominations. The show began previews at the Majestic Theatre March 27, ahead of an April 22 opening date, but has failed to catch on with audiences and with critics, who delivered mixed to negative reviews. Last week on Broadway, the musical played to just 51 percent capacity, and it has been bringing in $550,000 or less per week since opening, which is far below the running costs of an average musical.  The show, which stars Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett, likely hoped for nominations for its leads or for the musical itself to help right the ship.  Still, the show was always set for a limited Broadway run, through Sept. 6, before heading on a national tour. The production said Tuesday that plans are currently underway for the tour. It came to Broadway after about a 10-year development period with an international premiere in 2024 at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, Canada, …

‘Death Becomes Her’ to End Broadway Run

‘Death Becomes Her’ to End Broadway Run

Death Becomes Her will end its run June 28, after about 20-months on Broadway. The musical, adapted from the 1992 film, opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Nov. 21, 2024, after beginning previews on October 23. While it was initially a well-attended, high-grossing show, often bringing in more than $1.2 million a week, the musical has seen its grosses and attendance slump starting in January. As of the week ended May 10, the musical brought in just above $760,000.  The musical features direction and choreography by Christopher Gattelli, a book by Marco Pennette, and an original score by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey. The lead roles of Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp were originated by Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, who were both Tony nominated for their roles. Hilty played her final performance Jan. 11. The current cast includes Simard, Betsy Wolfe as Madeline Ashton, Christopher Sieber, Michelle Williams, Taurean Everett and Josh Lamon.   The musical received 10 Tony nominations, tying for the most nominations of the 2024-2025 season, but ultimately took home one trophy …

‘Just In Time’ Recoups .5 million Broadway Investment

‘Just In Time’ Recoups $12.5 million Broadway Investment

Just in Time has recouped its $12.5 million capitalization, becoming the first Broadway musical of the 2024-25 season to reach that milestone.  The musical, about singer Bobby Darrin, began performances March 31, 2025, at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre, and opened April 26, with Jonathan Groff originating the role of Darrin and singing hits such as “Beyond the Sea” and “Splish Splash.” The musical, directed by Alex Timbers, has been well attended throughout its run and has broken multiple weekly box office gross records at the theater. The musical hit its highest gross, of just over $2 million, during Groff’s final week in the show at the end of March, but even in recent weeks has been bringing in more than $800,000. Matthew Morrison took over Groff’s role for several weeks. Jeremy Jordan currently stars as Darrin. The recoupment marks a rarity among musicals, as production costs have risen, making it difficult for many shows to recoup, or even to stay open. Just in Time is only the musical to have announced recoupment from its …
