Uber caps employee AI spending after blowing through budget in 4 months

Uber caps employee AI spending after blowing through budget in 4 months

AI is getting expensive, and some companies are cutting back on usage in an attempt to moderate costs. That cohort includes Uber, which recently instituted internal usage caps as a way to cut down on its exorbitant AI spend. Bloomberg reports that the company has instituted a new rule that places a monthly $1,500 cap per employee and per agentic coding tool, including Anthropic’s Claude Code or Cursor. The usage is trackable via an internal dashboard that each employee has access to, although — in certain cases — the caps can be exceeded with permission, the company says. The news is perhaps not too surprising, since, in April, the company’s CTO revealed that the ridesharing giant had blown through its entire annual AI budget in a matter of four months. That appears to have occurred after Uber encouraged staff to use AI “as much as possible” and even ranked their internal usage competitively on internal leader boards, The Information previously reported. Uber’s COO, Andrew Macdonald, also recently cast doubt on AI’s productivity impact, noting during …

Illinois budget bill targets sports prediction markets with unique transaction tax

Illinois budget bill targets sports prediction markets with unique transaction tax

Illinois lawmakers have signed off on a budget measure that would create what appears to be the first state tax aimed specifically at sports event contracts traded through prediction markets. The provision was included in the wider revenue package contained in Senate Bill 3019, which cleared both chambers on June 1. Under the legislation, “any wagers offered under this Act shall be subject to incur a transaction tax equal to 1.75% of each exchange wager.” The bill also establishes a higher rate for operators with significant activity. After a licensee reaches five million exchange wagers during a fiscal year, the transaction tax imposed under this subsection shall increase to 3.5% of each exchange wager. Rather than taxing operator revenue, the proposal is built around transaction volume. Revenue generated by the tax would flow into the Sports Wagering Fund before ultimately being transferred to the state’s General Revenue Fund. The legislation states that the tax “shall be deposited monthly into the Sports Wagering Fund” and outlines the transfer process for certified amounts. Analysis circulated by Fairplaygov …

Dell’s new budget XPS 13 puts the MacBook Neo on notice

Dell finally announced its new XPS 13 laptop at Computex 2026 in Taiwan on Monday, almost five months after teasing it at CES. With a premium CNC aluminum build and a launch price of just $599 for students, the device is poised to aggressively compete with Apple’s budget bombshell, the MacBook Neo. On that battlefront, Dell is coming out swinging. “I’ll give [Apple] credit, it’s a good product…The difference is, we built something better,” Dell COO Jeff Clarke told reporters during a briefing ahead of Computex. Dell XPS 13 specs The XPS 13 will come in sky and storm finishes (left and right, respectively). Credit: Dell The XPS 13 will be the thinnest and lightest XPS laptop Dell has ever made. The XPS 13’s display will offer up to 500 nits of brightness and full DCI-P3 color coverage, so …

Dell XPS 13 (2026) vs. MacBook Neo: I compared both budget laptops, here’s which one I’d buy

Manufacturer or Full Name/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. The MacBook Neo was a total disruption to the consumer PC landscape, bringing premium-tier features to a competitive $599 price point. But its reign as king of the hill is being challenged. PC makers are responding with laptops that overtly compete with the Neo by one-upping its weak points.   Case in point: the new Dell XPS 13 — starting at $599 for students and $699 for general consumers — is the thinnest and lightest XPS yet, lighter than the Neo, with a bigger display, and better connectivity (and a backlit keyboard, to boot).  Also: Watch out, Neo: Dell’s new XPS 13 costs $599 and retains premium features How does it achieve this? A combination of lightweight hardware (8GB up to 32GB of RAM) and Intel’s new “Wildcat Lake” Core Series 3 chips, battery-efficient processors designed for budget PCs that trade in raw power for a more accessible price point.  Let’s break down the differences between the MacBook Neo and Dell’s new XPS 13, …

5 budget grocery hacks, according to savvy shoppers on Reddit

5 budget grocery hacks, according to savvy shoppers on Reddit

It was during a recent fridge clean-out when I came to the uncomfortable realization that I’m pretty bad at shopping for groceries. I’ll admit: much of it is due to poor planning and, frankly, laziness. Amid the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, a trip to the grocery store — whether it’s the local markets in my neighborhood or the Lidl just a short Subway ride away — is always a spontaneous decision. It’s a quick pit stop before coming home after work. It’s a last-minute excursion when I’m craving something specific and missing several key ingredients. It’s a dreaded task when I’m already caught up running other errands — or simply procrastinating. The consequences are always the same. I either overspend on food items, failing to take advantage of hidden deals as I frantically yet desperately attempt to restock my kitchen. Or, I overstock ingredients, failing to take inventory of what I already have and letting them rot in the hidden corners of the vegetable crisper. One thing tends to lead to the …

22 Best Gold Chains for Men 2026: Necklaces for Every Budget

22 Best Gold Chains for Men 2026: Necklaces for Every Budget

The trinity ring is a Cartier classic, featuring three interlaced bands, in pink, white, and yellow gold, to signify three of life’s great joys—love, fidelity, and friendship. This is an heirloom you’ll pass down (in that iconic red box), and while it’s certainly an investment, a heap of Cartier gold for under $2,000 strikes us as hardly the worst deal ever. Source link

HP Omnibook 3 Review: Redefining the Budget Laptop

HP Omnibook 3 Review: Redefining the Budget Laptop

In the past, none of that mattered in a laptop this cheap. The MacBook Neo changed the rules, proving that design matters, even at this price. To get to this price, however, HP and Apple made very different compromises. The OmniBook 3 takes the approach of keeping 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage at the tradeoff of using a slightly thicker, plastic chassis. For the right person, that’s the right choice. The thicker chassis also makes room for some ports. On the left side, you’ll find an HDMI, a USB-A 2.0, and two USB-C 3.0 ports. The right side includes an additional USB-A 2.0 port and a headphone jack. These USB-A ports are a bit slow, only capable of 480 MB per second speeds, making it only really useful for connecting peripherals. I criticized the MacBook Neo for using a USB-C 2.0 port at the time, so I have to carry that here too. It’s less confusing for users in this case since it’s USB-A, but I never like seeing a brand …
