Israel has threatened to launch a fresh bombing campaign in Lebanon despite US President Donald Trump’s fury over attacks on the country this week.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zmir said on Tuesday that “there is no ceasefire for our forces.”
He added: “We are working to maximize the freedom of action that has been granted to us and will seize every opportunity to remove threats to the citizens of Israel and to our forces.
“The IDF, across all its branches, is prepared to immediately return to combat against the Iranian terror regime. The Navy plays a decisive role in our ability to once again strike the terror regime with force, as we have done in the past,”
The statement comes after US President Trump confirmed he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “f****** crazy” during an explosive phone call earlier this week.
Mr Trump’s efforts to secure a ceasefire deal with Iran have been upended by Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.
He told the New York Post on Wednesday: “I was a little bit perturbed at his constantly fighting with Lebanon.”
Trump added: “I like Bibi a lot. And I work very well with him,” Trump told host Miranda Devine. “I’m a wartime president. He’s a wartime prime minister.”
The ceasefire talks were thrown into further jeopardy on Tuesday night when Iran launched drone strikes on Kuwait, damaging the country’s main airport.
Tehran also accused the US of violating a ceasefire understanding.
On Wednesday, Mr Trump said the idea that ceasefire talks were collapsing is “fake news.”
