Do credit card gambling bans reduce harm or shift behavior? Experts say there’s always a loophole

Do credit card gambling bans reduce harm or shift behavior? Experts say there’s always a loophole

As more states move to block credit cards from gambling, the policy sounds straightforward. Cut off borrowed money, reduce harm. In practice, the results are mixed. The rules change how people pay, but they don’t always change why they gamble or how they manage their money. Ashley Morgan, a debt and bankruptcy attorney in Virginia, sees the gaps up close. She questions whether limiting a single payment option can do much when people can shift funds in minutes. “Not being able to use credit cards on gambling apps may help reduce credit card debt for a few people,” she told ReadWrite, “but many people will just use their credit cards for their other expenses.” In everyday life, that can mean using a debit card to place bets while quietly leaning on credit for rent, groceries, or utilities. Not being able to use credit cards on gambling apps may help reduce credit card debt for a few people, but many people will just use their credit cards for their other expenses. Consumer Credit Grows Less Than Expected On Subdued Credit Card Usage

Consumer Credit Grows Less Than Expected On Subdued Credit Card Usage

While the monthly jobs report has become a veritable economic random number generator, with every monthly print coming either well below or above the forecast stack, the weekly initial claims report has become its foil – a study in boring reporting, with numbers barely budging week to week, and usually falling right on top of Wall Street estimates. A similar dynamic is emerging for the monthly consumer credit report: following a volatile 2025, when revolving credit swung around wildly in unexpected ways dragging the broader print with it, the last few months have been surprisingly steady, printing right around the consensus expectations with barely any volatility. The latest, February, report published minutes ago by the Fed was no surprise: with expectations for a modest increase from last month’s $8.05 billion to $10.25 billion, the reported number was just shy of the estimate, printing $9.484 billion, up from a downward revised $7.665 billion. Revolving credit rose a modest $709 million – the weakest monthly increase since November – to $1.328 trillion, the highest since November 2024.  …

Arsenal FC: Gabriel Martinelli learns punishment decision for referee push amid red card verdict

Martinelli was booked for his actions but Hackett believes the Arsenal forward should have been sent off. He said: “Referee Sam Barrott awarded a free-kick to Arsenal, Martinelli comes rushing in and he pushes Sam out of the way. “Now I’m sorry, Gabriel Martinelli showed total disrespect for the match official Sam Barrott in that situation. “Although Sam issued a yellow card, for me it’s a red card. You just cannot put your hands on a referee, let alone push him out of the way. Gabriel Martinelli in action for Arsenal against Southampton Arsenal FC via Getty Images “You’ve got to look around the country, up and down, Saturday and Sundays where we have local park referees going out and doing their games. “What message does that send out to our local park referees? “I thought Sam had a good game, he refereed the game well, but I think he let the refereeing community down by not sending off Gabriel Martinelli for pushing him at the award of a free-kick, so he could take the …

Brick vs. Bloom Card: I tested both for my screen addiction, and the winner depends on you

Brick vs. Bloom Card: I tested both for my screen addiction, and the winner depends on you

pros and cons Pros Better app than Brick. Easy app scheduling. Lower price. Cons Continued to block apps after my scheduled time was over. Breaks defeat the purpose of strictly curbing screen time. I’m on track to having spent 16 years of my life glued to my phone screen. That’s what Bloom, the latest salve to phone addiction, tells me as I create my account.  16 years. According to my calculations, if I weren’t attached to my phone’s addictive mechanisms, I could have spent that time running 1,700 marathons, grabbing 2,900 cups worth of coffee with friends, or adding one or two more hours of sleep to my night each night. Instead, I scroll.  And I’m not alone.  Also: The base model Kindle is my secret weapon against doomscrolling – and it’s on sale As phone addiction becomes more widespread — and as we learn how social media keeps us addicted — more companies are coming up with solutions. Bloom is one of those companies that, like the popular Brick, developed a tap-able NFC-enabled card …

Like a business card, you give them out to people you meet – but they foster romantic connections instead. The brand’s founder, content creator Margot Lee, came up with the idea after exiting a long-term relationship and feeling pressured to get on the apps. “I really did not want to do that,” she said. She wanted to connect with people through “happenstance of being at the same place at the same time”. Every time you save a photo to an SD card, you’re slowly destroying it from the inside

Every time you save a photo to an SD card, you’re slowly destroying it from the inside

We treat SD cards like digital vaults. They live in our cameras, Nintendo Switches, and Raspberry Pis for years, and we just assume that as long as the plastic casing isn’t cracked, our data is safe. That assumption is largely a mistake. SD cards have a fundamental design flaw: they are consumable items with a pre-determined expiration date. They don’t usually “break” in the traditional sense. Instead, they rot from the inside out. It’s one of the many reasons some folks no longer trust memory cards. Related 5 signs that mean your PC parts are failing Your PC doesn’t fail suddenly. How flash memory wears out — and why your SD card has an expiration date Why every save, delete, and overwrite slowly destroy your card from the inside SD cards use NAND flash storage. Unlike old-school hard drives with physical spinning platters, flash memory stores data by trapping electrons inside microscopic cells. It sounds high-tech, but it’s remarkably fragile. The Secret Spy Tech Hidden Inside Your Credit Card

The Secret Spy Tech Hidden Inside Your Credit Card

Credit cards are more than just convenient payment methods, they’re a culmination of decades of technological innovation, some of which have surprising origins. As Veritasium explores, the magnetic stripe, EMV chip and NFC systems that power modern transactions owe their existence, in part, to espionage breakthroughs during the Cold War. For instance, the Soviet-engineered listening device known as “The Thing” introduced principles of passive, battery-free communication that later influenced RFID technology. These advancements, initially designed for covert operations, now underpin the security and functionality of everyday financial systems. In this deep dive, you’ll uncover how magnetic stripes transformed payment processing while exposing vulnerabilities like card skimming and how EMV chips addressed these risks with dynamic encryption. You’ll also explore the rise of contactless NFC payments, which balance speed with security and learn about ongoing threats such as digital pickpocketing. By understanding the evolution of credit card technology, you’ll gain insight into the delicate balance between innovation and security that shapes how we pay today.
