Rivian Explains Why CarPlay Debate Will Become ‘Completely Obsolete’

Rivian Explains Why CarPlay Debate Will Become ‘Completely Obsolete’

On the latest episode of The Verge‘s Decoder podcast, Rivian’s software chief Wassym Bensaid explained why the EV maker still refuses to offer Apple CarPlay. In short, Bensaid said Rivian does not want CarPlay to fully take over the software experience. “The challenge with screen mirroring solutions is that they take over every single pixel in the car,” he said. Instead, Rivian prefers to offer its own interface with “end-to-end integration.” Bensaid added that “deep AI integration into the car” will eventually make the debate over offering CarPlay in vehicles “completely obsolete.” He believes that Rivian owners will be able to access the core functionality of many apps through an AI agent, rather than needing to rely on CarPlay or Android Auto. “I really believe that the way you interact with apps which are mono-threaded, single buttons, single icons, a lot of that will be now completely reshaped into a world where it will become an agentic integration that presents itself into a wholesome user experience to the user,” Bensaid explained. However, he admitted that …

Maximize Apple CarPlay: AI Integration and Navigation Hacks

Apple CarPlay has become an essential tool for modern drivers, offering seamless integration between your iPhone and your vehicle’s infotainment system. Remove apps you rarely use to declutter your dashboard and reduce distractions. Organize secondary apps into additional screens for quick and easy access when needed. For instance, placing Apple Maps …

These Android Auto and CarPlay features are built in, but most drivers never find them

Your car’s infotainment screen is probably smarter than you think. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay ship with a surprising number of new and established features that most drivers scroll past, ignore entirely, or never discover because nobody told them to look. They are not hidden behind paywalls or buried in obscure menus. They are right there, waiting. Here are the ones worth your attention. Related These 3 Android Auto features made my car feel like mine Curiosity and Android Auto are a dangerous combination for me. Hands-free voice commands in Android Auto and CarPlay go way beyond directions Hey Google: what Android Auto’s voice commands can actually do Most Android Auto users know they can tap the microphone icon to trigger Google Assistant (which is increasingly powered by Google’s Gemini AI). Fewer know they can skip that step entirely. If “Hey Google” isn’t responding, check your phone’s settings for “Assistant” or “Android Auto” to make sure the driving-mode wake word is enabled. It’s good for more than just directions. You can send messages, make calls, …

Google Maps for CarPlay Getting Gemini AI

Google Maps for CarPlay Getting Gemini AI

The Google Maps app for CarPlay could soon include support for Gemini, based on code that MacRumors found in the Google Maps app. Gemini integration would allow ‌CarPlay‌ users to get detailed directions and information from Gemini. Strings in the app suggest users will be able to tell Gemini to navigate to a specific location after agreeing to new Terms of Service in the iPhone version of the Google Maps app. The Google Maps app already supports Gemini on iPhone, but Gemini is not available for use in Google Maps on ‌CarPlay‌. Gemini in Google Maps adds an “Ask Maps” feature that can answer complex, real-world questions about locations and destinations. On the iPhone, users can navigate to a location and then say Hey Google or tap the Gemini icon to converse with Gemini in the Google Maps app. Apple started allowing third-party voice-based conversational apps to interface with ‌CarPlay‌ in iOS 26.4, which is likely why Google is now able to add Gemini to the Google Maps app for ‌CarPlay‌. Gemini integration is not …

Grok AI Voice Mode Arrives on Apple CarPlay

Grok AI Voice Mode Arrives on Apple CarPlay

SpaceXAI has released Grok Voice mode for Apple CarPlay, allowing CarPlay users to ask the chatbot questions and make requests directly from their vehicle dashboard, handsfree. Previously, Grok for iPhone displayed a placeholder app in CarPlay saying the handsfree support would be coming soon. Grok comes built-in on Tesla vehicles, but now almost any other car can access it. Apple started permitting third-party voice-driven conversational apps to integrate with ‌CarPlay‌ in iOS 26.4, but developers must add support for the feature and obtain a special entitlement from Apple. Apple requires apps to use its voice control template for CarPlay. Whenever voice-based services are active, apps must display the voice control interface and can include up to four action buttons. However, Apple says chatbot apps should not show text or imagery in response to queries. Grok Voice mode joins ChatGPT and Perplexity, which arrived on CarPlay in March and April, respectively. ‌CarPlay‌ has supported third-party apps for years, but Apple restricts the types of apps permitted on the platform to reduce driver distractions. Apple maintains a …

Ottocast Cabin Care Wireless CarPlay Adapter Review: Tiny Tracker

Because everything runs wirelessly via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, there is also no cable clutter to deal with. This isn’t just a convenience thing. It means no wires dangling within reach of sneaky toddler hands. Where Tech Collides This is where the real test comes in. In split screen mode, the system shows CarPlay and the camera feed side by side, with CarPlay positioned on the left for easier tapping access. It’s a smart layout in theory because you get the best of both worlds, but there are some limitations. To fit the camera feed, the CarPlay interface is significantly condensed. It’s still usable, but small enough that I often touch the wrong icon, especially while driving, when precision tapping isn’t exactly my priority. It’s not a deal-breaker, but you’ll notice it, especially if your fingers aren’t very dainty. Switching to camera mode gives a full-screen view of the back seat, but it comes at the cost of CarPlay controls. Music still plays and calls don’t drop, but I lose access to inputs like my steering …

I tried ChatGPT on Apple CarPlay, and now I’m absolutely spoiled

I don’t need much convincing to try something new on Apple CarPlay, so when the ChatGPT app icon appeared on my car’s infotainment screen, ignoring it was never really an option. I was instantly curious to see how it would actually hold up during a drive. A few drives later, I can say this with complete honesty: I got used to it far quicker than I expected. Related The 6 Best ChatGPT Features You Must Try ChatGPT has an extensive list of features, so don’t skip the best ones! A setup that gently reminds you to be a responsible adult Turns out, all I needed was something that would just listen Before I could actually use it, I had to set things up on CarPlay, and I expected the usual routine of tapping through permissions without thinking twice. But this felt different — the first thing ChatGPT did was ask for access to my iPhone’s microphone, then paused to remind me to unlock my phone when I’m not driving. It wasn’t trying to rush me …

I tested ChatGPT and Perplexity AI as my CarPlay voice assistants – this model was better

Lance Whitney/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Siri typically serves as my voice assistant when I’m driving and my iPhone is connected via Apple CarPlay. And that’s fine for interactive tasks such as playing music, getting driving directions, setting a reminder, and calling or texting someone. But Siri often stumbles with more complex or challenging questions, the type that you’d usually ask an AI. With Apple’s new CarPlay support for third-party voice assistants, you’re able to talk directly and hands-free with popular AI apps. So far, you can chat by voice in the car with ChatGPT and Perplexity AI just as you would at home or elsewhere. That means you can ask them questions, make requests, and engage in back-and-forth conversations. Also: Google Maps vs. Waze: I compared the two best navigation apps, and this one’s better There is one barrier here.
