Karl Lagerfeld, the great German fashion designer, lived in a surreal kind of grandeur. The creative director of both Chanel and Fendi, he owned apartments in Paris, Rome, and the Côte d’Azur, as well as villas in Biarritz and his native Hamburg; enormous collections of Art Deco furniture, antique jewelry, and couture garments; a personal library of some 300,000 books, by his own estimation; paintings and sculptures by Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, and John Baldessari; three Rolls-Royces; a curious assemblage of 509 iPods; and hundreds of pairs of his trademark wraparound sunglasses and fingerless biker gloves. According to a conversation that his biographer, William Middleton, had with the Parisian florist Lachaume, his annual flower budget appears to have been about 1.5 million euros. If you have a Mac and a cat, you’ve probably run into a situation where your cat sits on your computer keyboard. Whether it’s because Macs are warm or because they want to distract you from the screen absorbing all of your attention, laptops tend to attract cats. A new Mac app called Cats Lock adds cat-proofing that keeps your cat from doing damage to whatever you’re working on when it gets on your keyboard, and it can even be set to shoo the cat off. You can click to turn on Cats Lock from the menu bar or use a quick keyboard shortcut, and it prevents cats from being able to activate the keys. Cats can be particularly good at finding odd keyboard shortcuts you never knew existed and making changes that are annoying to undo, so Cats Lock is useful for preventing that. With the tech industry singularly focused on AI models, Anthropic is having an exceptionally good year. The company may soon pull ahead of its main competitor, as it looks to raise tens of billions of dollars in a funding round that would put its valuation at some $950 billion (OpenAI was valued at $854 billion in its March round), and business customers increasingly express a preference for Claude over ChatGPT. A recent report showed Anthropic recently outpaced OpenAI among business customers, quadrupling its market share since May 2025. Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code and Cowork, has been a key figure in that success. Since joining the company in August 2024, Wu has helped shepherd Claude through a critical phase, leveling it up from a purely informational chatbot to a coding tool and beyond. My cat Mira is perfect, and has never done anything wrong. She also loves walking on laptop keys—both my MacBook and my wife Kathy’s Windows PC. You might think that walking on laptops is an example of Mira doing something wrong. She disagrees. And, in any case, we’ve both learned a lot about how our computers work because of this. Every time she walks across our keyboards she triggers some new, confusing keyboard shortcut. I wonder how she did it, but then I find out the keyboard shortcut by Googling around. Here’s what I learned. Mira Hides Important Things Multiple times Mira has walked across my keyboard and caused most of my windows to disappear. This sends me into a panic—is my work gone?—until I click a dock icon and realize everything is still there. What happened? It could be a few things. Husband and wife, Cara and Matt, shared the story of their wedding day, which was also the story of how their newest furry companion joined their family.
