San Diego police say they are responding to an active shooter at a local mosque

SAN DIEGO (AP) — An active shooter opened fire at a San Diego mosque Monday, and police believe people have been shot, authorities said. Officer Anthony Carrasco said people reported multiple shots at the Islamic Center of San Diego, about 9 miles (14 km) north of downtown San Diego. It was unclear if the shooter was outside or inside, or had been captured yet. The San Diego Police Department posted that the scene is “still active but contained.” Carrasco said he did not have more information at the moment. The Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its website. The campus includes the Al Rashid School, which the website says offers courses in Arabic language, Islamic studies and the Quran. Aerial TV footage showed more than a dozen children holding hands and being walked out of the parking lot of the center that is surrounded by scores of police vehicles. The white mosque is in a neighborhood of homes, apartments and strip malls with Middle Eastern restaurants and markets. Gov. …

Met Opera’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego Imagines Feminist Revenge

Met Opera’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego Imagines Feminist Revenge

She is the subject of a current exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and an upcoming one at the Tate Modern. Netflix is planning an adaptation of her life. Her unibrowed face stares out from tote bags, murals, notebooks, enamel pins, refrigerator magnets, and dorm-room posters across the globe. A recent auction of The Dream (The Bed), 1940, helped send her market value into yet a higher strata. I speak, of course, of Frida Kahlo. Add to the list a new opera. El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, which recently opened at the Met, stages an oneiric reckoning with two famed painters. The premise is deceptively simple: on a November day in 1957, Frida returns from the underworld during Día de los Muertos for a brief reunion with her husband, who is himself not long for the world of the living. How Diego Luna Dresses Like a Director in Cannes

How Diego Luna Dresses Like a Director in Cannes

Though he starred in two films that debuted in Cannes in the early aughts — 2003’s Soldiers of Salamina and 2007’s Mister Lonely by Harmony Korine — the first time Diego Luna walked the film festival’s red carpet came when he presented his narrative directorial debut, 2010’s Abel. It was a family affair as Luna attended with his longtime close friend, Gael Garcia Bernal, who executive produced the film, and his own father. This many years later, Luna still remembers every detail of the screening and how he dedicated the showing to his dad. Luna is back on the Croisette again this year and the family bonds are strong once again. He’s here to present his latest directorial effort, Ashes, attending with his son, and he’ll be making the promotional rounds wearing looks by Zegna. Luna has a history with the Italian luxury house that dates back nearly 20 years to when he starred in a Zegna campaign. But rather than outgrow an early fashion partnership, Luna has leaned more fully into wearing finely tailored suits …

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Reunite on Day of the Dead in New Met Opera Production

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera Reunite on Day of the Dead in New Met Opera Production

Racked by unrelenting pain, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo wrote in her diary shortly before she died: “I joyfully await the exit — and hope never to return.” Yet return she does — if only briefly — on the Day of the Dead in “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” (“The Last Dream of Frida and Diego”), a Spanish-language opera receiving its Metropolitan Opera premiere this week. The opera, with libretto by playwright Nilo Cruz and music by Gabriela Lena Frank, imagines Kahlo’s spectral reunion three years after her death with Diego Rivera, the great Mexican muralist with whom she had a tempestuous romantic relationship. In a twist on the Orpheus legend, Rivera has grown weary of life without Kahlo and — on the holiday that honors the dead and welcomes the return of their spirits — he summons her from the underworld in the hope they may be eternally reunited. For mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, who stars as Kahlo, the opera is “a journey of emotions that every human can possess, told through the lens …

Tangled Live Action Movie Adds Andor Star Diego Luna

Tangled Live Action Movie Adds Andor Star Diego Luna

Diego Luna is letting down his hair for Tangled, Walt Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 2010 animated movie. Luna has joined the project in a role created specifically for the feature, which goes before cameras in Spain in June. Australian actress Teagan Croft and Zombies star Milo Manheim lead Tangled, respectively playing Rapunzel, the curious and plucky would-be princess with magical hair, and Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who helps her escape her tower prison. The two nabbed the roles after a search on both sides of the Atlantic in December. Also on the call sheet is Kathryn Hahn, hailed for her recent works in Agatha All Along and The Studio, and who is playing the duplicitous Mother Gothel. Michael Gracey, who counts the musical biopics Better Man and The Greatest Showman among his credits, is directing the feature, which, like the original, will have big musical elements. It is unclear whether Luna, as part of the new role, will be required to sing as details on the live-action take are being kept in the castle. The original animated …

Diego Rivera’s Grandson Donates 150,000 Objects to Museo Anahuacalli

Diego Rivera’s Grandson Donates 150,000 Objects to Museo Anahuacalli

Mexico City’s Museo Anahuacalli is set to receive more than 150,000 objects from Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera, the grandson of Diego Rivera, in a donation that significantly expands the museum’s holdings and renews attention on the artist’s original vision for the site. As first reported by The Art Newspaper, the gift spans centuries, from 16th-century ceramics to textiles, photographs, wooden objects, prints, and archival material tied to Rivera and his circle. The works will be transferred in stages over the coming months, beginning with ceramics and followed by manuscripts and correspondence, with completion expected by the end of the year.  Related Articles Coronel Rivera, a photographer and art historian, spent more than four decades assembling the collection. It brings together pre-Hispanic objects, family documents, and works from his own career, though it does not include paintings by Rivera or Frida Kahlo.  Speaking to the Art Newspaper, Coronel Rivera said the collection had always been intended for a museum but that he had not expected it to end up at Anahuacalli. He added that he had not …

UK puts Diego Garcia handover on hold to appease Trump – POLITICO

UK puts Diego Garcia handover on hold to appease Trump – POLITICO

The U.S. president has changed his mind multiple times on the issue. But in February, Trump warned Starmer that he was “making a big mistake” in giving over the island. “This land should not be taken away from the U.K. and, if it is allowed to be, it will be a blight on our Great Ally,” Trump said. The British government earlier this week acknowledged that it’s running out of time to pass the legislation. “We continue to believe the agreement is the best way to protect the long-term future of the base, but we have always said we would only proceed with the deal if it has U.S. support,” a U.K. government spokesperson said Saturday, according to the Guardian. The agreement was meant to avoid a potentially painful and expensive legal dispute with Mauritius over the former colony. Indeed, after Trump’s intervention last month, Mauritius said that it was exploring legal tools against London. Toby Noskwith, a spokesperson for campaign group Indigenous Chagossian People, told Reuters that questions needed to be asked about “the …

Iran’s strike on Diego Garcia will be ringing alarm bells across Europe

Iran’s strike on Diego Garcia will be ringing alarm bells across Europe

Iran’s reported attack on the Diego Garcia military base, deep in the Indian Ocean, with two ballistic missiles has raised alarm bells across the West. The Khorramshahr-4, a 20-tonne rocket that can carry 80 cluster munitions, is thought to have been the weapon fired at the joint UK-US base in the Chagos Islands. Defence analysts told The Telegraph that the attempted strike on a base more than 2,400 miles away could put continental Europe – and possibly even Britain – under threat from Iranian ballistic missiles. “London, Paris, Berlin and every other European capital now lies within credible Iranian reach,” said Brigadier General Ran Kochav, a former Rusi research fellow and ex-commander of the Israeli air and missile force. Most experts think the Khorramshahr-4 has a maximum range of around 1,900 miles. This would put it in range of UK and other military bases in southern and eastern Europe, including Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans and perhaps even Italy, Austria and Germany. The IDF claimed on Saturday that a range of 2,500 miles may be …
